townhallcom: Now This is Something You Don't See Every Day - 11/13/17 06:00 AM
Timothy Meads, writing for Townhall.com on November 12, points out a rare bird sighting recently.  Saturday Night Live this week takes a few well-earned shots at the Democrat leadership.  SNL is more often seen barbecuing conservatives,  so they earn recognition when they give some equal time to the liberals.
Their extremely constructive criticism points out that that, among their other problems with the departure of President Obama from the active scene, the Democrat leadership is all well into Social Security territory in terms of age and may suffer from a lack of new ideas to send to the voters.  A bit of truth … (2 comments)

townhallcom: Tragedy in Texas - 11/08/17 07:57 AM
The primary point of this post is to honor the 26 people - including many children who were slain in the small Texas town of Sutherland Springs... just east of San Antonio. This appears to be a homegrown killer without the trappings of a terrorist attack.  Just a single tragic figure who, with the benefit of hindsight, should have come to the attention of law enforcement long ago.  And who benefitted by a failure of the Air Force to post information from his court-martial leading to his discharge from the service to civilian databases that may have prevented his acquiring a gun.
But this … (2 comments)

townhallcom: Political Truth is where you find It - 01/27/10 08:36 AM
Our political cartoonists have traditionally been a leading indicator of political winds of change.  There are anthologies of political cartoons published each year - and I recommend them not only for their humor but for their view of our society at their particular point in time.
I have written recently of the disconnect between the American People and President Obama's administration and the Congressional leadership.  I have said that I disagree with the President - but more than that I do not even understand him.  While I do not doubt his patriotism, his vision of America seems to be very … (6 comments)

townhallcom: "Don't just do something - stand There" - 11/19/08 12:16 AM
I could become very concerned as I read the media reports that President-Elect Obama is a reincarnation of Lincoln or the second coming of a political messiah.  OK - the election is over and your guy won.  I get that.  But how about letting the man take office and actually do something before you start writing about his performance.  It is not enough that we have elected a man, admittedly talented and charismatic, who has no track record - we want to put his Presidency into the laudatory chapters of the history books before he has even taken office.  Horsepucky.
The … (4 comments)

townhallcom: And now... What ? - 11/08/08 08:37 PM
Let's get one thing straight at the beginning.  The election is over.  Barack Obama is the President-Elect.  And I accept him as my President for the next four years.  I wish him well.
That said, I may, from time to time, find it necessary to offer some constructive advice or criticism - as I have concerning the administration of President Bush.
Even before taking office on January 20, 2009, I expect the President-Elect to have to view the realities of our situation in a manner that may not have occurred to him during his two year campaign.  As he begins the … (5 comments)

townhallcom: An Endorsement you can believe In - 10/27/08 09:02 AM
I found last weeks Charles Krauthammer article to be a strong, even moving endorsement of  John McCain.
It has been frustrating to listen to the Obama campaign complain of the negative attacks on their candidate while, from this observer's perspective, the Obama campaign has been the leader in untrue and negative attacks.
Well, we are just a week from the finish line (the campaign finish line, that is - who knows when the result of the race will be known) and I for one will be glad to see it over.
But Krauthammer is a fine writer and he lays out … (6 comments)

townhallcom: Telling Truth to the Public - 10/26/08 11:12 PM
One of the frustrations of trying to communicate ideas in the highly charged atmosphere of this years election is that neither side even sees the existence of the other side of the argument.  It is actually a good thing that the two major political parties are fielding candidates who represent very different points of view.  But that does sort of require that both sides recognize that there are two points of view.  Otherwise, the discussion runs on emotion and a liberal and I could (to quote the song from The Music Man) stand touching noses for a week at a time … (2 comments)

townhallcom: The Band Played On - the Great Debate - 10/15/08 07:18 PM
The debate this evening was more interesting than its predecessors because of a more intimate, conversational format - but still lacked the fire and brimstone needed for Senator McCain to take advantage of the last major free media audience that he will enjoy before the election in less than three weeks.
Senator McCain made some of the necessary points but did not move forward aggressively to close the deal in any of his opportune moments.
So the public remains blissfully uninformed on a number of major troubling topics.  And the media continues to watch reruns of Monday night Football from last … (5 comments)

townhallcom: What if the Band Plays "Hail to the Chief" for Barack Obama - 10/12/08 10:01 PM
Salena Zito, a contributor for Townhall.com, has offered a sobering, if evenhanded, view of our possible world with a President Obama.  My philosophical differences with Senator Obama should be clear in the description - but clearly Obama seeks many of the same things I seek but with very different methods and relying on very different personalities.
The idea of an Associate Justice Hilliary Clinton is not news.  That would solve many problems for a President Obama.  A secretary of State John Kerry would certainly not be my choice.  But welcome to the world we may wake up to on November 5.  … (11 comments)

townhallcom: And Now the Rest of the Story - 09/18/08 05:32 PM
Another of my favorite authors chimed in today to talk about the financial problems. Neal Boortz is an Atlanta talk show host who is more Libertarian than Conservative.  He is not always polite to his telephone guests, but you always know where you stand with Neal.  He is an attorney and a very opinionated man.  I like listening to him.  I do not always agree, but that is true of all of the commentators.
In his column this week Neal addresses the factors which led to the glut of sub-prime mortgages which is the front end of the problems we are seeing … (5 comments)

townhallcom: Avon Calling ! - Who ordered all this lipstick ? - 09/11/08 08:11 AM
Well, my spin on the Lipstick capers is a bit different, as usual.  I believe the lipstick comment was intentional (particularly since Senator Biden made a lipstick comment on the same day - so it is just team talking points).  But I believe the momentary insult to Governor Palin was incidental.  What I believe was Senator Obama's plan was to get the Republicans to respond so that he could launch again into his "there they go again" rant about how the Republican's always take an innocent comment out of context, gin up false indignation, and attack the Democrats for nothing more than … (16 comments)

townhallcom: The only thing to fear is fear Itself - 08/29/08 11:12 PM
It is interesting to listen to the Democrats talk about Karl Rove and the Bush Administration's politics of fear. " Don't believe those Republicans - they are just trying to scare you.  We offer a politics of hope with a positive message."  Ah... Right.
The problem is that in order for their message to work, in order for us to seize on their message of hope - brought to you by the government, by the way, which may be absurd on its face - they have to make you believe that the present course is hopeless.  That is why you need them.  … (6 comments)

townhallcom: Who was that Masked Man - 08/28/08 07:50 PM
Earlier this year I had several conversations with political pros who are more knowledgeable than I about the national political contests - particularly on the Democrat side.  The response I received about Senator Obama was repeated in several conversations even while the speakers were praising the Illinois Senator for his obvious talents: "I wish we knew more about him..."
Simon Conway breaks down the inconsistencies and unknown features of Senator Obama's proposed programs (and how to pay for them) <link here> in his excellent article.  But beyond that, there is very little known about the man himself.  Where is the cadre of … (6 comments)

townhallcom: Political Theater and the Light of Day - 08/26/08 12:49 AM
After a nauseating, if occasionally intriguing, endless Presidential campaign we are finally getting down to the heart of the matter.  Finally we are seeing the outlines of the final conflict which will determine the direction of the country for at least the next four years - and with the probability of a few Supreme Court replacements, likely for a generation.
Senator Obama has had a tough month.  He seems to have failed several tests and his judgment seems to be lacking in the view of some commentators.  He has shown that he can recognize a problem and try to solve it, … (6 comments)

townhallcom: We have a real Choice - 08/09/08 12:55 AM
This Presidential election offers clear choices for the American public.  It should not be a contest of personalities because the two candidates present dramatically different sets of beliefs, plans and proposals that will reach every corner of economic, judicial, domestic and foreign policy.  So there is adequate basis to make the decision of who should lead the United States as President on substantive policy issues of importance to all of us.
Today, Jack Kemp weighs in in an article appearing in Townhall.com to discuss the important differences between John McCain and Barack Obama on issues of economic policies.
It is certainly … (16 comments)

townhallcom: Say What ? - 08/07/08 10:05 PM
There was a time when I found myself a bit mesmerized by the sound of his voice and the optimistic message of his words.  But now I have no confusion and now I see clearly why I am not voting for him.  And what is interesting, is that despite the media's biased and fawning support, the American public shows signs of agreeing with me.  And despite the use only of vague pronoun references - every reader of this post knows exactly who and what I mean.
The price of gasoline has become the top issue for virtually all Americans and the … (3 comments)

townhallcom: Someone in the media gets It - 07/11/08 11:22 PM
Every so often somebody in the clannish community that we refer to as the Media surprises me by telling the truth - and impresses me by telling it well.  This week it is Michael Barone.  Michael appears on Fox News as a contributor and is a senior writer for US News and World Report.  He is also a contributor to Townhall.com, where today's gem appeared.  Michael is a graduate of Harvard and Yale Law School and from time to time, it shows.
While the media and the Democrat leadership are whining about the price of gas or the gloomy economic forecasts and … (10 comments)

townhallcom: Freedom Never Cries - Backstory - 07/02/08 04:56 AM
I posted the you-tube video for Freedom Never Cries as a salute to the military for the Fourth of July.  I didn't want to clutter the post with any unnecessary words - but there is a story to be told.
There are several video versions of the song on you-tube, but the one I posted is the original from the artist (John Ondrasik of the band Five for Fighting).
The better site to view the video is John's own: (one of his charity sites)

Although the You-Tube versions have limited play statistics, John's web site version has been viewed more … (4 comments)

townhallcom: The Gasman Cometh - 06/21/08 02:13 PM
It is, as the saying goes, time to pay the Piper.  Gas prices at three dollars per gallon didn't even cause a bump in the road, but gas at four dollars per gallon (and rising) is causing a convulsive reaction on the part of the American public.  The cost of petroleum probably only effects you if you drive or ride on the roads (or fly) or if you eat practically anything.  So the rest of you can go listen to one of the "take a break" music clips I provide from time to time.
But for the rest of us, it … (12 comments)

townhallcom: Fallen Heroes - 05/28/08 02:06 AM
I find, much to my surprise, that there is news in the world ourside of the Active Rain drama which has been center stage this week.
There seems to be a certain drumbeat to the increasing articles suggesting that Senator McCain's age should be a factor in the Presidential race.  (if anybody is offended by the use of the word "race"  in the last sentence - I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry...OK? ) It would be totally appropriate for Senator McCain to have a campaign staffer to take care of these stories - I would suggest his Mother - who at … (4 comments)
