topsail: Pets and the Ocean - 07/20/09 06:44 AM
Dogs enjoy the beach as much as humans. But less like humans, dogs can and will drink seawater.  This is among the most common causes of illness ofr one's pet while enjoying those lazy summer days on the beach.
Vomiting and diarrhea frequently follow.  If this happens, but your dog seems to be maintaining it's typical disposition, hold off food and water for up to 12 hours.  Then put on bland diet, boiled chicken and rice is recommended and very benefical.  If the symtoms continue or your dog seems distressed or depressed it is best to plan a trip to the … (0 comments)

topsail: Hanna and Topsail Island - 09/07/08 02:14 AM
Well, mother nature was good to us this time.  We bunkered down and prepared for a lot of rain and high winds.  What did we get?  Barely any rain and some pretty strong winds but not enough to do any real damage.  I live 10 minutes from topsail island and only had leaves, limbs down in my yard and really a happy camper when i awoke at 6 am to see everything still in tack.
Some were not so fortunate in NC as up to 9 inches of rain fell leaving flooded roads and over flowing ponds and lakes.  There was … (1 comments)

topsail: Continued topsail turtle project nesting - 08/08/08 07:35 AM
When a turtle hatches, lets say decades ago, weighing in at only an ounce, they have a 1 in 5,000-10,000 chance of becoming an adult.  Secondly, return to the very beach they were born in.  Appear to be guided by the earth's fields, and somehow the GPS switch is turned on as they make their way from the nest to the ocean.
Once on shore it is like real estate,  location, location, location.   If the sand doesnt have the right texture, or smell or the turtle feels disturbed in any way they will return to the sea and continue to search.  … (0 comments)

topsail: Topsail Sea Turtle Project - 08/07/08 08:59 AM
While Summer may seem vacation time, for the sea turtles that frequent our coasts it is the busiest time of the year.  Waters are warm and our turtles congregate off shore in search of food and love.
Nesting season begins May 1.  Volunteers patrol 26 miles of beach every morning looking for turtle tracks in hope of discovering a turtle's nest.  Tracks resemble tank treads or zipper teeth mean that a mama turtle has amazinly found her way back to her natal beach, the beach where she was born about 25 to 30 years ago.  This with one thing on … (0 comments)
