Nobody loves the smell of fresh turkey roasting in the oven more than me.  But let’s remind our kitchen cooks not to poor cooking grease down the kitchen drain. Clogs from cooking grease are the #1 cause of sewage spills! They can damage sewer system and wastewater pumping stations. Here is some simple and wise advice:
1)      Never pour grease down the drain, toilet or garbage disposal
2)      Pour cooking grease into a can and refrigerate or freeze it till solid, then dispose of it in the trash.
3)      Always wipe excess grease from pots, pans, dishes and utensils with … (0 comments)

cooking: Cooking Safety with Caruso - 12/07/10 05:21 AM

With the holidays right around the corner there is a lot of cooking going on. It is important to be fire safe when cooking in the kitchen. Cooking fires are the leading cause of fires, fire injuries and fire deaths in Orange County. Given their frequency, the Orange County Fire Authority believes that more are happening but not being reported. Over the past five years (2004-2008), cooking fires occurred almost every three days. There have been 546 cooking fires leading to 42 injuries, four deaths and nearly $8 million in damage. One in every four fire deaths in OCFA's service … (0 comments)

cooking: READ THIS before you cook for Thanksgiving! - 11/24/10 06:48 AM
Keep your family and friends safe and healthy with these important tips from the USDA.

DON'T: Thaw frozen food at room temperature
DO: Thaw by refrigerating...6hrs per pound

cooking: Fire Up the Grill! - 08/21/09 11:28 AM
As summer winds down, the BBQs keep heating up. Grilling with family and friends is a great way to spend a summer day, but we must also keep in mind safe grilling techniques. Each year, about 600 fires/explosions occur with gas grills resulting in about 30 injuries.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has developed safety standards to help prevent deaths and injuries.
Here are some safety tips to reduce the risk of fire or explosion with gas grills:
Newer propane gas tanks have "over-fill prevention" devices installed on them. If you are unsure if yours is up to standards, the … (1 comments)

cooking: Spring Means Gardening...Even for the First Lady - 04/02/09 05:12 PM

We all wait for spring, and for so many varied reasons...one of which is gardening.
By now most have heard that the Obamas are even going to plant an organic vegetable garden.  Records show that there hasn't been a vegetable garden on the White House grounds since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden there after WWII.
You don't have to be a foodie or a gourmet to have an herb garden or vegetable garden.  And some may prefer the beauty and aroma of a flower garden rather than herbs or vegetables.
Alot of this is really about a celebration of spring and … (1 comments)

cooking: Want "Winter Herbs"?...Pot Plants Indoors...Advice Here. - 10/27/08 09:22 AM
Do you miss those scintilating flavors and aromas from fresh herbs during winter months? Harsh weather can cause herbs to die over the winter months.  This year, why not try planting indoors? Here are some good tips to ensure that you herbs are plentiful:
*When you move the herbs from outside to inside, check for bugs.  If you choose to use these herbs in cooking, you will want to use a soap-based insect product to kill any bugs that may have hitchhiked inside.
*Cut herbs back to about half in order to set the stage for proper growth. Since plants may suffer … (0 comments)
