fuel: Homes for Sale in Orange County / Seatbelts Wrinkle Your Clothes? - 06/07/09 12:58 PM

Who is really the big winner when it comes to seatblets? Let's think...
Did your dry-cleaner come to mind?  No? Think again...
I was probably the last person in California to give in to seat belts.  I always taught, reminded and instilled the seat belt habit for my family members but for me it was a chore that I just couldn't deal with.  How could I wear a seat belt when it wrinkles my dress shirt and makes me look like I slept in my car after a drive to my office or to an appointment? Could that possibly be better … (1 comments)

fuel: Don't Feel Sorry for Gas Stations... - 12/01/08 06:45 AM

Gas prices have declined anywhere from 55% to 68% since September, so you may be thinking 'How are those gas stations to survive"?
Guess what...they make more money at $1.89 than at $4.29 per gallon according to a USA Today article.
Apparently profits rise as prices fall.  As prices were on the rise, the gross profit margin dropped from 14 cents to about 9 cents on a gallon of gas purchased. Retailers couldn't pass on alot of their increases to consumers because of lack of demand. But with prices down, demand is up and margins are back to the norm for … (1 comments)

fuel: Gas Price Reductions Don’t Add Up to Oil Price Reduction… - 09/19/08 10:55 AM
I'm pretty good with math.  But when it comes to gas prices I'm pretty sure that everyone is pretty good!  And for me, the numbers don't add up.  Let's take a look...
When oil was $147 a barrel, gas prices at the pump were about $4.59 in Orange County for regular grade fuel.
Now, oil is at about $92 - $97 per barrel depending on which day it is (and which financial institution is crying out for help).  My math says this is a $50+ decline in the price of oil which is about 40% off the high and gas costs … (2 comments)

fuel: Americans Drove 30 Billion LESS Miles During 1st Half of '08 - 08/04/08 04:35 AM
The good, the bad and the ugly...
Remember that old film?  Well this time it's not a movie.  The good is: Americans are showing their displeasure with the price of fuel costs and driving less...a lot less!  We drove 30 billion miles less in the first half of '08.
The bad is: A good amount of tax on gasoline goes toward repair and or maintenance of roads and bridges.  They want us consuming fuel.
The ugly is: We can fall behind substantially on the condition of our roads and bridges if fuel consumption continues to fall.
I have an idea...let's see how … (2 comments)

fuel: Laguna Niguel...Going to Speed and Saving on Fuel - 07/30/08 05:24 PM
My beloved city of Laguna Niguel in the great OC has found a way to get faster and save fuel.  The City Council has approved the order for 2 new motorcycles for our Police Department.
You know how large the engines are in police cars...they roar! And they suck up fuel at an outrageous rate.  Well, we have near perfect weather here, so why not a couple of motorcycles? Why not a few motorcycles for that matter?  Cuts down on gas consumption and gets police out there for speedy response.
Nice work Laguna Niguel!
And thank you for making me Your Orange County Real … (0 comments)

fuel: Energy Conservation Goes Way Beyond Fuel.... - 05/05/08 06:06 AM
Think about electricity efficiency as well as just fuel for energy savings.  Here is some energy data that you'll find interesting and compelling:
*Electricity use per home rose 23 percent from 1981 to 2001 according to the Department of Energy.
*The Census Bureau says 89 percent of single-family homes completed in 2006 within the U.S. had installed air conditioning, up from 46 percent in 1975
*If we merely improved just 5 percent as a nation in electric efficiency we could prevent 90 large coal-fired power plants from having to be built over the next 20 years, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
*Companies are … (1 comments)

fuel: What is Your Tipping Point for Fuel Costs? - 04/06/08 05:34 PM
Car-Pooling is more popular than ever.  Cutting down on long automobile trips and using public transit.  These are some alternatives to the paying at the pump...and recently we've seen new highs for fuel costs.
Analysts say we are already at a point where many consumers are cutting non-essentials or going with cheaper brands.  For many, the "tipping point" came when gas prices climbed above $3.25 per gallon for regular grade gasoline, and quite a bit more for premium fuel.
What is your personal "tipping point" when it comes to fuel costs?  Or do you have one at all?
Let's share some viewpoints here...send in … (4 comments)

fuel: Airlines Making Bank...on Baggage! - 03/23/08 06:40 PM
Airlines are struggling to make a buck, and it shows. With a soft economy (nice words for recession) and rising fuel costs, airlines are getting squeezed.  So, you better squeeze more things into one piece of luggage, because they found a way to make some supplemental income.
Airlines (and many of them) are charging for overweight baggage, a second piece of luggage and I wish you luck if you're considering a third piece of luggage.  The fees can be hefty ($50 per bag) and when traveling as a family it can add up quickly to penalize the group of travelers whose only … (3 comments)

fuel: Trucks Driving Slower... - 03/23/08 04:29 PM
Diesel fuel has crossed $4 per gallon...and the only benefit?  Trucks are driving slower.  That really is a good thing.  It's good for us because those hauler trucks are scary on the freeways and it's good for them because they conserve fuel when they drive slower.
Officials say that slowing a trailer rig from 75 mph to 65 mph increases fuel mileage by more than a mile a gallon.  Since most trailer rigs get 10 miles per gallon, that is a significant (10 percent) saving.
My point is we may be saving lives as well...by driving slower.
Your comments are welcome.
