Recently I read about an interview The Wall Street Journal did on thirteen economists on the recent increase in Retail Sales, and here is a recap of what they had to say about retail in todays economy.
Retail sales were boosted in July by autos and gasoline - and that's mostly it. Ex-auto and gas sales dropped for the second time in three months, and had bad breadth - only 3 of 11 retail categories rose on the month (eating/drinking, non-stores, miscellaneous).

The snowstorm that has hit New England has closed roads, delayed flights, and closed businesses and schools. Snowfall totals are up to 20 inches.
Will the snow stop holiday shoppers from being able to cross last minute gifts off their lists? So far the answer may be yes. Super Satuday wasn't so super on the East Coast. Some economists are predicting that this pause in shopping will have an impact on the economic recovery.

We may think more of upscale shopping and a great Carousel in the middle of the mall where we can treat the kids to a ride. Cool Stores, Cool names...Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy.
Gap Inc. has announced plans to close about 115 stores for fiscal 2008. The corporate owner of Banana Republic and Old Navy said that they will close 65 Gap stores, 20 Old Navy stores and 15 Banana Republic stores in North America and another 15 stores internationally. The announcement did not specify where the closures will be.
In Orange County, we have 13 Gap stores along with 12 Old Navy stores and 4 Banana Republic stores.
