organizing: Graduation - 04/06/19 07:45 AM
Professional Organizers remind themselves, often and steadfastly, that we can't want change for our clients more than our clients want change for themselves. We can't force them to adopt new habits, mindsets, preferences or even a new kind of file folder. And that's imperative - change is always something which each of us needs to accomplish at our own pace. Forming new habits is HARD, and it seems like the measure about how long habit formation takes changes every week.

But we're human. We get impatient sometimes, bored sometimes, fearful that a client won't get past an obstacle. Losing a client unexpectedly … (1 comments)

organizing: Organizing Events Calendar - new feature Casual Uncluttering website - 12/01/18 09:53 AM
HELLO!! I've added a new feature to the website, a calendar of organizing events around Washington such as shredding days, Fix-It Fairs, the recycling truck standing in a parking lot for a day, Scout troops coordinating fabric or tree drives. I'm not going to even pretend that I'm going to be consistent about adding news, partially because I always describe my schedule as a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces, and partially because it's actually not that easy to find happenings. It's very very VERY likely that I'll add events in big bunches - if I learn about 10 events from one … (4 comments)

organizing: Books, glorious books, we're anxious to read them - 03/12/18 01:15 PM
Books, glorious books. Bookmark This: 12 Beautifully Novel Ways to Organize Your Books reprinted from Realtor.com with permission from Stephanie Booth is now my online favorite for all time "bit of me here" piece. A word of caution – I do not agree with putting books on staircases – not safe. And intensely creative though it is, the idea of putting my books spine-out on a shelf gives me nightmares!
piovesempre/iStock No matter how convenient it is to download a book on your tablet, there’s nothing like the sensory pleasures of an old-school hardback: The smell of the paper. The feel of turning the page. The cover art that evokes … (2 comments)

organizing: Music - 12/25/17 08:51 AM
My son likes hip hop and rap. Not my favorites. But he’s home from school this week and visiting with me, so sure, I’ll have that so-called music on in the car. And I’m having a somewhat harder time driving. Switch the station back to my preference for driving – classic rock, thank you very much – and I’m undeniably more focused. But it’s gotta be 80s pop for bookkeeping (and better yet, I WILL hire a bookkeeper someday!!!).

organizing: Spark joy an illustrated master class by Marie Kondo - 09/15/17 05:27 PM
I disliked Ms. Kondo's first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. I'm warmer to Spark Joy: an illustrated master class on the art of organizing and tidying up. It's significantly gentler: Ms. Kondo has softened her "my way or else" invocations, acknowledging that people can use other approaches  to their possessions, in particular when it is necessary to assess the utilitarian stuff of life like garbage cans and screwdrivers and legal papers. Even if it means keeping items - gasp! She has also begun acknowledging some of the sources of her knowledge, which I wish … (6 comments)

organizing: 5 Reasons Why Letting Go is Good for the Soul - 07/24/17 07:42 PM
This is the third article I've written for Jeff Moore's fantastic website EveryDayPowerBlog. It was fun writing, but the best part is the video that Jeff found for the end. I'm reprinting the article with Jeff's permission, but PLEASE go online for the film. It's fascinating.

5 Reasons Why Letting Go is Good for the Soul

What do you have to let go of? Stuff, maybe? A harmful relationship? An ironclad belief in something even though there’s absolute proof that what you believe isn’t true? Anything else?
Are they all tangled in each other? The old jacket is something the ex-significant-other left behind. You insist leaving … (10 comments)

organizing: Dust in my hair and a smile on my face - new motto? - 04/01/17 03:05 PM
I’m considering “Dust in my hair and a smile on my face” for my new motto. My dog Trevor. He’s got an even better smile than I do.
Not really, I’m quite pleased with myself for “I help you think outside of the box to get something into the box,” which is quite versatile at need – for example, I recently asked for help at a business networking meeting in finding a car vacuum. Ended the request with “Because sometimes you just have to get some dust out of a box.”  But the runner-up is VERY appropriate sometimes.  And the other … (4 comments)

organizing: Good Housekeeping Magazine's Clutter Rescue! book - 03/11/17 01:22 PM
This tiny book, "Good Housekeeping Clutter Rescue!", put together by the editors of  Good Housekeeping magazine, the 132-year-old grande dame, is filled with ideas, tips and encouragement for getting every space in your home organized.  There is a slight disregard for cost, an “oh of course you can just buy a pretty solution” optimism to the book, but it does also supply many ideas for home-made, recycled, inexpensive alternatives  –  like making magazine holders out of cereal boxes, a great solution in a child’s room. Flip through it for inspiration.

The above is another Amazon review, another one which, who knows, may … (3 comments)

organizing: ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life by Kathleen G. Nadeau - 03/09/17 07:45 PM
ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life
I had an unusual reaction to this book by Judith Kolberg & Kathleen G. Nadeau, a highly-regarded ADD coach. This is an excellent resource for ADD-abled people because it is explicitly formatted for people with ADD - they can usually read it, when other traditionally-formatted books on the subject might not work for them at all. I LOVE to read. I had a horrible time trying to read this book. It was HARD. It was almost as if, because, at least as far as I know, I don't have ADD, the book was fighting against me. … (2 comments)

organizing: Don Aslett's "Clutter's Last Stand" - 01/29/17 07:47 PM
"Clutter's Last Stand", Don Aslett's golden oldie. I'd promised myself I'd post one book review a week in honor of studying to become a Certified Professional Organizer (think M.A. for Organizing). Uuuuummmm. Once a month OK with everybody???

Don Aslett, a cleaning expert who built a housekeeping service empire, doesn't soften the blow about decluttering. He openly mocks consumerism, doesn't look at neurological or psychological foundations for cluttering behaviors, and puts the responsibility for cluttering squarely on the clutterer's shoulders, no excuse-making allowed. So he is going to make some people ANGRY. He is going to hurt other people's feelings. Many people will … (4 comments)

But here's the biggest secret of all. We don't all of us do all of those things, and neither will you. If it doesn't work for you, or works against you, DON'T DO IT. Organizing is all about finding systems and structures and habits that work to your strengths and preferences. It's all about learning and thinking styles. I never make my bed.
