That is the question. Over the years, I have heard varying opinions from home inspectors regarding whether the home should have gutters. The two primary functions they talk about are to prevent water penetration into the basement and keep water from the entrances and walkways.
Some say it is an essential function of the house to keep the water away from the foundation. Others say proper grading by pitching the soil away from the foundation and moving plantings a foot or so away from the house will accomplish a similar effect. ....That is the question. For the most part, the professionals say, Yes. Over the years, I've been at close to if not more than a thousand home inspections. During the home inspection, inspectors usually will talk about the gutters or lack of them. They talk about their purpose and the reason for having them.

We are so fortunate to have received the much-needed rain these past few days. Some of the rain came in light showers and others in downpours and thunderstorms.  
 
When it rains, especially with heavy downpours, you may take note of whether your gutters are working correctly or if you don't have gutters, think about putting them on your house.
