IRVINE, Calif. – In August, a total of 34,501 U.S. properties had foreclosure filings at various stages of the process – default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions. It’s a 14% month-to-month increase, and a 118% year-to-year increase, according to ATTOM’s August 2022 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.

New data show there were a total of 23,204 U.S. properties with foreclosure filings—default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions—an increase of 29% from a month ago and 139% from a year ago, according to ATTOM’s January 2022 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.
“The increased level of foreclosure activity in January wasn’t a surprise,” said Rick Sharga, executive vice president of RealtyTrac, an ATTOM company. “Foreclosures typically slow down during the holidays in November and December and pick back up after the first of the year. Foreclosure filings were down 29% from 2020 and down 95% from a peak of nearly 2.9 million in 2010, to the lowest level since tracking began in 2005, according ATTOM’s Year-End 2021 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report, released this week.
The filings, which include default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions, were reported on 151,153 U.S. properties in 2021, and represented 0.11% of all U.S. housing units, down from 0.16% in 2020 and down from a peak of 2.23% in 2010.
