As supply chain issues and labor shortages continue to impact the housing market, builders have not been able to make progress toward closing the gap in new home demand. A new report released this week by Realtor.com found that the gap between single-family home construction and household formations grew from 3.84 million homes at the beginning of 2019 to 5.8 million homes at the end of 2021. January came out of the gates slower than 2021 when it came to new single-family home sales, according to the latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The annually adjusted rate was recorded at 801,000, which represents a 4.5% lower rate than December 2021 and 19.3% versus January 2021 (993,000). Additional findings: The median sale price of a new home sold in January 2022 was $423,300, while the average sale price was $496,900.
