hawaii points of interest: A Fishing Expedition at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park | North Shore of Oahu Hawaii - 09/02/11 03:31 PM
We had this bright idea to go fishing a couple of Sundays ago and see if we couldn’t do any better that our ‘great fishing expedition of 2004”.  Nope, back then we did not catch one darn fish and the best thing that came out of that one was we made a friend for those three days.  “Boy” was there at the beach every morning to greet us and laid at my feet after romping around for awhile.
So, on that Sunday we drove through Old Haleiwa town and then over to Waialua and on Fresh Air Camp Road. Now, in … (6 comments)

hawaii points of interest: May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii | Hawaii May Day 2011 Events - 04/27/11 05:23 AM
A poet named Don Blanding, wrote an article in the local newspaper in early 1928, throwing out an idea that there might be a holiday that centered around a Hawaiian custom of making and wearing the flower lei.  Then, fellow writer Grace Tower Warren came up with the idea of a holiday on May 1 to go along with May Day and she is the one who made up the phrase, "May Day is Lei Day."
The first Lei Day was held on May 1, 1928 and they encouraged everyone to wear a lei. There were wonderful programs in downtown Honolulu … (10 comments)

hawaii points of interest: Dinosaurs! | Pearlridge Center on Oahu - 07/10/10 06:28 PM
Shopping at Pearlridge Center has been one of my favorite places to go shopping.  With an array of shops, restaurants, theaters and more they always have some kind of educational exhibit going on for the children.
Well, when I went to Pearlridge to do a bit of shopping this past week, lo an behold....there were the Dinosaurs at Phase II of Pearlridge Center.  I was amazed how the two little toddlers were hanging out by the fence surrounding the display and they were't afraid of the roaring and moving dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs  is an educational program (FREE!) and started on June 18th and running through … (17 comments)

hawaii points of interest: The Waianae Coast | West Oahu Coastline and Interests - 04/10/10 06:52 AM
I appreciate the history surrounding Oahu and if one is relocating to Hawaii or just coming to visit, I strongly encourage to seek out the historic sites. There is more to an area besides the stores and malls and the history of an area will provide insight into the past to present.

The Waianae Range spreads the length of the West Coast of Oahu (Nanakuli, Maili, Lualualei, Waiane and Makaha are a few of the communities along the way) and separates it from the rest of the island. To get to the West Coast of Oahu you can just go … (16 comments)

hawaii points of interest: A Memorable Evening on the Star of Honolulu Dinner Cruise - 12/27/09 01:49 PM
We boarded the Star of Honolulu for the  Honolulu Sunset Dinner Cruise and we were on our way out into the open sea by 5:30pm yesterday evening. We started with a beautiful romaine salad and a tiny loaf of taro bread...and then out I went to the deck to snap some shots.

With a sun setting over open seas with a view ‘to die for' of Diamond Head and Waikiki and a lovely dinner with entertainment like hula, Tahitian and other dances with a wonderful dinner  it has surely been another memorable time for Gary and I.

hawaii points of interest: History Surrounding the Makapuu Lighthouse - 11/01/09 07:49 AM

The stone image of "Makapu'u " the supernatural woman and another one of Malei are no longer visible but it is said that Makapu'u (bulging eye) was in the form of a black rock. She was a female kapua (flower, blossom, child) who came to to Oahu (Honolulu County) with a famaous voyaging priest.
Malei, another female kapua was a stone set up to attract Uhu (Parrotfish) to the area. They made offerings of Lipoa (a type of seaweed) and also said to be a rock relative of Pele (the fire goddess)
But the Makapu'u Lighthouse is still standing and located on the East … (18 comments)

hawaii points of interest: Bishop Museum in Honolulu Hawaii - 08/04/09 02:38 PM
Bishop Museum in Honolulu Hawaii has been one of my favorite places to go for rich Hawaiian and Polynesian history with artifacts and information galore!
Bishop Museum always schedules grand events with all sorts of themes. They set up tents with local wares from artists and crafts for purchase and they usually have a music or entertainment part of the event and they use the large grassy area in the middle of the grounds for all to enjoy.
The Bishop Museum Store has other wares such as puzzles, post cards, dolls, pictures and more!

The following events are scheduled and I'm hoping … (5 comments)

Many a time we drove around our island and passed this property and I was one to concoct all kinds of morbid thoughts and tales in my head when I saw a spooky kind of structure. This was one of them. After researching I found that there is nothing spooky … (20 comments)

hawaii points of interest: Through the Years - Happy Anniversary! - 01/18/09 01:06 PM
 Seven years ago today (and after about 13.5 years of being 'single') I married Gary.
It has been the most pleasurable trip of our lives. We reminisced today about the courtship days and the travel through these few short years.
My time passes by fast when you're having fun!
That's how we gage how well our marriage is going. I suppose if it were a yucky one the time would have dragged by realllllll slow. It probabaly helps that we're older and have gone through all the trauma and drama that one goes through in their younger years.
One thing is for certain. … (47 comments)

hawaii points of interest: Tanaka of Tokyo - Japanese Steak & Seafood House - 12/27/08 06:02 AM

Yesterday we decided to head over to Ala Moana Shopping Center and eat lunch at Tanaka of Tokyo -Japanese Steak & Seafood House. With a wide variety of steak and seafood dishes on the menu to choose from each dish is prepared by a skilled Master Teppan-Yaki (teppan meaning iron griddle and yaki meaning fried or broiled) chef.
The seating is situated around the iron griddle with the chef in the middle preparing the food with an entertaining show of flying spatulas and knives. With the chef cracking us up with jokes and flinging shrimp tails into his hat and … (10 comments)

 With cameras and video in tow we headed down to Waikiki from Central Oahu to the Waikiki Aquarium. Long talked about for something fun to do we hopped in the car after talking about it last night. We did everything we needed to do early this morning so we could have a few hours of pleasure.

It was well worth the half an hour trip and after going from window to window at the Waikiki Aquarium's displays we came upon ......

hawaii points of interest: Tsukiji Fish Market & Restaurant- Honolulu Hawaii (LOCALISM FEATURED) - 09/02/08 08:41 AM

 With Jazz on Wednesday nights and a live local band every Friday night this is the added pleasures of dining at Tsukiji's Fish Market & Restaurant. We went a little early on Saturday to stand in line (we were first) and by time the doors opened 15 minutes later the line was snaking around the side of another restaurant!
Known for it's lunch and dinner buffet Tsukiji's Fish Market & Restaurant is huge! My husband, Gary, didn't even sit down....just headed off to the sushi bar! I headed down to the Yakitori Bar and then down to the tempura and udon section.

hawaii points of interest: Pearlridge - Kam Swap Meet - Open Market - 08/25/08 05:29 PM

Kam Swap Meet is located right across from Pearlridge Shopping Center on the Macy's side. Back when I was a kid it was the local drive in theater. In fact, one time my mom and I went and we both fell asleep and woke up to a bare parking lot! I woke my mom and she took off like a bat out of hell and dragged the speaker thingy out of the ground. She was so scared that she threw it out the window! LOL!
Okay. Back to my story.  Kam Swap Meet is a local style swap meet with all the souvenirs, all kinds of clothing, jewelry, arts, … (19 comments)

hawaii points of interest: Floral Mysteries of Color and Style - 08/17/08 07:23 AM
There are so many picture perfect 'subjects' to get a shot of while touring the islands for memories; to look back on with wonder, One of them being orchids and floral mysteries that continuously astound me. The following shots were taken at the National Tropic Botanical Gardens in the Poipu Beach area on the island of Kauai. This is a Brassia type Orchid (below) but all types of orchids are abundant on all islands as well as worldwide.

Showering you with grace and statute....

hawaii points of interest: OMG! My Daughter Went Skydiving! Mokuleia Hawaii - 07/30/08 12:46 PM

~~~~~~~~
If you just want to HANG AROUND go to the Dillingham Air Field on the North Shore of Oahu and do the Skydiving thing.
Dillingham Airfield was fully utilized during World War II. Over the years it was an Army Air Field and an Air Force Air Field and finally closed but used for civil use in the 1970's.
In a joint agreement with the military and the State of Hawaii it continued civil use and in the late 1990's until present there are the skydiving and sailplane rides. The gliders and many private aircraft are based here … (46 comments)
