My husband was out running errands today, when he heard the bad news and called to tell me about it.
We all knew that it was coming, but in their 2007 original closing announcement Phillip Morris said they wouldn't be closing their Concord NC plant until the end of 2010.  However, this morning Phillip Morris started notifying its employees that the plant would be closing at the end of July 2009!  1100 good paying jobs will be lost, and it couldn't be worse timing... since the February 2009 Cabarrus County unemployment rate was already 11.2%!  The company cited a decrease in cigarette sales as … (2 comments)

Earlier this week, Dunkin' Donuts opened it's FIRST ever hotel location at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord NC, a brand new indoor water park resort.  The new Dunkin' Donuts and Great Wolf Lodge are conveniently located just off I-85, near Concord Mills Mall and Lowe's Motor Speedway.

According to the company's website, the Canton Massachusetts based coffee and baked goods chain is embarking on a major expansion effort into larger airport hotels, resorts and vacation ownership locations through the East, Midwest and Southwest regions of the country.

Great Wolf Lodge, the southeast's first indoor water park, opened in Concord NC on March 31, 2009!  The massive 475,000 square foot structure cost over 100 million dollars to build.  The lodge boasts over 400 guest suites and an 80,000 square feet, four-story tall indoor water park. 
The lodge is located just off Bruton Smith Blvd/Concord Mills Blvd, near two of the biggest NC tourist attractions, Lowes Motor Speedway and Concord Mills Mall.

local information: Concord NC- Electric rates to increase by 9% - 04/12/09 03:18 AM
Well, here we go again... another NECESSARY consumer service is going to cost us more, just when the average consumer is having a hard time making ends meet.
On Thursday April 9, the Concord NC City Council voted 6-0 to raise the electricity rates of its customers by 9%!  They say that the increase in due to an increase in fuel charges and a change in their contract with Duke Energy.  The city of Concord buys their electricity from Duke Energy at a wholesale rate and resells it to their customers.

More GREAT NEWS for the North Carolina Research Park in Kannapolis NC!  Last Monday it was announced that PepsiCo Inc. has agreed to open a research lab at the Research Park.  According to the article, the lab will be 4000 square feet and will focus on biology and nutrition.  PepsiCo doesn't just make Pepsi-Cola beverages, they also own brands such as Frito Lay, Quaker Oaks, Gatorade and Tropicana.

I recently received an email detailing a campaign to keep Lowes Motor Speedway in Concord, NC.  The Cabarrus County Visitors & Information Bureau, the Cabarrus County Economic Development Corporation and the Cabarrus County Chamber of Commerce are working together on this project. 
They are asking members of the community to go online and fill out a brief form authorizing them to send a postcard to Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports, Inc.  The postcard will contain the following message: "Please keep Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord and continue to pursue your dream to build the World's Racing Destination."

local information: Concord Annexation... Opening of New Cox Mill Road High School May be Affected - 07/01/07 02:56 PM
Here we GROW again!  The City of Concord wants to annex the future site of a new high school on Cox Mill Road and on Thursday June 28, 2007 Cabarrus County School Board members approved the voluntary annexation process.
The future high school is scheduled to open in fall 2009 to relieve overcrowding at Northwest Cabarrus High School.  However, the opening could be delayed because the city won't issue construction permits until the annexation is complete and the school adheres to the city's building requirements.
For the benefit of the kids, let's hope that the Board of Education can cut through the city's red tape … (2 comments)

Sunday July 1, 2007 the merger between Northeast Medical Center and Carolinas HealthCare System will be complete.  At   that time, Northeast Medical Center will take a new name, Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast (CMC-NorthEast). 
Residents of Concord and the surrounding areas are fortunate to have such an outstanding hospital in our community.  NorthEast Medical Center is a Magnet hospital, which places them in the top one percent of all healthcare facilities for nursing and patient care.

Concord's Philip Morris manufacturing plant will begin to phase out its 2500 workers, approximately one year from 6/26/2007.  The company plans to close the 2.4 million-square-foot facility in 2010 in a plan to consolidate manufacturing in Richmond VA and expand manufacturing in Europe. 
These are good paying jobs with good benefits that will be difficult to replace.  The company plans to offer relocation to Richmond, early retirement or severance packages to their Concord employees.
