business: Finding Success in Creative Ways… - 04/24/13 06:55 AM
One thing I love about my job is hearing the stories from small business owners all over the country. Last year, we helped 97 small business owners in 27 states purchase, construct, renovate, or refinance their commercial property. When you work with that many business owners, you’re bound to hear some wonderful stories about overcoming adversity, going the extra mile, and finding creative ways to solve problems.
I probably don’t need to tell you this, but being a small business owner (and working with small business owners in an advisory role) takes a considerable amount of thinking outside the box. In … (2 comments)

business: Lessons from Capitol Hill: How NOT to Negotiate… - 01/03/13 04:42 AM
Even though 2013 is now three days old, let me officially wish you a Happy New Year! Like me, I’m sure you can look back at 2012 and see the varying highs and lows that have brought us to where we are now, but let’s not dwell too long on the past. Let’s learn what we can from the successes and failures of last year, and then look forward to what we can accomplish and achieve in the New Year.
My first blog post of 2013 comes courtesy of my business partner — Mercantile’s Chairman of the Board, Geof Longstaff. He’s … (1 comments)

business: The SBA Should NOT Be Abolished… - 03/13/12 12:10 AM
The Wall Street Journal announced last week that an upcoming special report will explore the pros and cons of abolishing the U.S. Small Business Administration. This comes in response to President Obama wanting to consolidate a handful of government agencies, and while I’m generally all for streamlining and simplifying government, I’m against what’s being proposed in this case.
My primary reason for opposing the abolition of the SBA is that America’s small business owners need (and deserve) the support of a government agency like the SBA. Small businesses have been responsible for about 70% of all net new job creation in … (0 comments)

business: No Love this Valentine’s Day for America’s Small Businesses… - 02/15/12 03:16 AM
I’m fired up today. Not because it’s Valentine’s Day, but because America’s small businesses still aren’t getting the attention and assistance they deserve. Though it took me a while today to properly frame my thoughts, I finally have a video for you that expresses how I feel about President Obama’s treatment of small businesses, the recent SBA changeups, and a lot more. It’s not short (just under nine minutes), but if you care at all about the well-being of small businesses and the future of the SBA, you’ll really want to watch this through to the end.
So, here’s my Valentine’s … (0 comments)

business: BONUS Friday Video: A Busy Week in Small Business Lending… - 01/21/12 12:57 AM
There’s a whole lot going on here at Mercantile and in the world of small business lending. There’s so much going on, in fact, that I decided to do another video blog — the second one this week. This is unprecedented for us, but I want to keep you in the loop on our latest SBA lending webinar, our upcoming Open House, President Obama’s Disney visit yesterday, and the SBA Administrator becoming a member of the President’s Cabinet. Oh, and there’s Rick Perry’s little comment about abolishing the SBA (a pretty terrible idea in our humble opinion). Little wonder he’s just … (0 comments)

business: Mercantile Capital Corporation Reports Record-Breaking 2011 - 01/10/12 08:55 AM
At Mercantile Capital Corporation, we issue press releases fairly regularly to update our industry and the news media on what we’re up to — recent closed loans, monthly and yearly totals, etc. I know these are not nearly as personable as our usual blog posts and videos, but I think our readers (you) might be interested in keeping up with our activities and performance throughout the year. I don’t want to seem too self-serving by doing this — I just want to share how things are going.
The following press release is a year-end recap of our 2011. It was a … (0 comments)
