When it comes to thinking about firsts and flying everyone immediately thinks of the Wright Brothers and Kitty Hawk. As well they should. However what many don't realize is that the Wright Brothers made what might be considered a more important flight in Arlington VA at the Fort Myer Army Post. The US Army Signal Corps wanted an aircraft that could hold two people and fly for at least one hour. If it hadn't been for the VA home loan program I never would have been able to buy my first two homes! Now years later I'm helping military families transitioning to Fort Belvoir, Quantico or anywhere in the Military District of Washington use the VA Home Loan Program to buy homes. It doesn’t matter how famous you might be in US history if you can’t pay your bills the government is going to confiscate your land. And this is what happened to none other than Robert E. Lee and his wife during the civil war. General Lee was unable to keep up with the taxes on the Custis-Lee estate and abandoned the property while fighting in the civil war.
