military relocation news: Marine Barracks DC-The Oldest Post of the Marine Corps - 05/18/09 08:34 AM
In 1801 President Thomas Jefferson rode through Washington DC scouting for a location to house the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Ever since that day the Marine Barracks DC has stood in a prime downtown location and was key in protecting the city during the War of 1812. Though not as well known to those outside of the military as Quantico Marine Base located 30 miles south of DC, the Marines stationed at the barracks are an integral part of the security and ceremonies that happen in the Nations Capital every day.

When you drive through the gates of Fort Myer and see the historic brick buildings and Victorian style mansions on Generals Row you realize that this post may be a bit different than any others where you may have visited before.  From the civil war when the post, then called Fort Whipple defended Washington DC from the Confederate Army to today the traditions of the Army stand strong.

military relocation news: Fort Belvoir-The Thermo-Con House Stands Alone - 04/14/09 12:11 AM

Tucked away among all of the traditional homes, both old and new on Fort Belvoir stands a home that isn't like any of the others.  Just as the Lustron homes on Quantico were a response to the US Government's need for quick delivery homes after WWII, the Thermo-Con house on Fort Belvoir stands as a reminder of the Army's attempt to use alternative building materials in the 1940's.
Situated next to the traditional Cape Code homes of Gerber Village, the Thermo-Con house looks more like Frank Lloyd Wright's
Pope-Leighy House just a few miles down the road than it does its … (2 comments)

military relocation news: Military Relocation-Things to Know if Your Landlord Defaults on Their Mortgage - 04/01/09 12:46 AM
The current real estate market in Northern Virginia has proved a rude awakening for some renting military families who signed a lease in the last year.  Landlords who decided NOT to pay their mortgages have left the tenants holding the bag when the sheriff comes to the door.
Military familes who are forced to make a local move due to a foreclosure may find some relief from the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.  Not many servicemembers know that under section 531 in the SCRA anyone looking to evict an active duty servicemember from a rental property that is their primary residence must … (35 comments)

military relocation news: Living on the Right Side of the Tracks-Communities the VRE Built - 01/15/09 02:49 PM
When the Virginia Rail Express (VRE) first began operations along the I-95 corridor in 1992 there were questions as to whether the lack of housing near the train stations would derail the long term plans for the commuter rail. Since that time a new supply of "whistle stop" towns has sprung up close to the tracks including Belmont Bay, Rippon Landing and Quantico. The Woodbridge Station sits just at the edge of Belmont Bay and is within a mile of the marina that is the jewel of the community.  Still growing Belmont Bay offers buyers the chance to live in a community … (4 comments)

military relocation news: VA Loans and Northern Virginia Foreclosures -Putting the Rumors to Rest - 01/07/09 12:36 PM
There seems to be a rumor flying around that you can't use a VA loan to buy a foreclosure property. THIS IS NOT TRUE! Buyers all over Northern Virginia are successfully closing on a foreclosure property using their VA loans. It is funny how rumor becomes fact by just one person saying they didn't get the house they wanted because the VA required repairs. If you want to by a property that falls into the "wreck" category then you might be better off with an FHA 203 (k) loan so you can get the money you need for repairs in your loan … (8 comments)

The 2009 Basic Allowance for Housing Rates (BAH) have been published for active duty military members.  For military families moving to Fort Belvoir, Quantico, Pentagon or other duty stations in the Northern Virginia, DC and MD areas the new rates are an increase of an over last year's rates.
For those who are not familiar with BAH, the rates are based on the median rental rates in the area and may not cover what a service member pays in a monthly mortgage if they decide to buy a home while stationed in the area.  The median rental rate includes not only … (2 comments)

military relocation news: Lend a Hand to a Family Left Behind-It’s Simple - 12/18/08 12:20 AM
As the holidays come roaring now is a great time to lend a hand to a military family "left behind" while their loved one is deployed overseas.
If you live near a military family with a loved one deployed this holiday season stop by and volunteer to help them out for a few minutes or a few hours. You can put up their outside holiday lights or help get the Christmas tree in that pesky stand.  Volunteer to stand in line at the post office or UPS store for them.  Have a video camera?  Help the family make a holiday video to post … (6 comments)

military relocation news: Military Relocation-VA Loans Offer 100% Financing for Qualified Buyers - 11/25/08 11:26 PM
As the mortgage market continues to shift away from the risky loans of the past five years, active duty and qualified retirees are rediscovering one of the great benefits at their disposal.   VA loans were often overlooked when the market was hot pushing military families to choose other loan products some of them potentially risky adjustable rate mortgages.
Today the VA loan is one of the few dependable 100% financing options left.  Buyers are required to pay your own VA funding fee which can be financed as part of the loan and the funding fee is waived for disabled veterans.  With … (6 comments)

military relocation news: Fort Belvoir Base Housing-You’ve Come A Long Way - 10/24/08 12:34 AM
The first question you might ask is why would a Realtor® write about base housing?   Don't you want to sell me a house?  Certainly it would be nice if everyone who moved to Fort Belvoir would buy a home but in reality many families make the decision to live on base for a variety of reasons.
Our family had to make the same decision both in the US and overseas.  We lived both on and off base depending on what housing was available for us and our location.  Our 700 square foot house in Okinawa with neighbors who owned a water buffalo was … (4 comments)
