military relocation virginia: Rental Watch-Are the Mortgage Payments Being Made? - 10/14/07 10:36 AM
This week a call came from a former client asking for help for his co-worker.   The sheriff had turned up at the door of their rental property with orders to evict them from the premises.  The renters a US Army Major and his family had moved in to the property in early June and had been paying their rent on time.  Unfortunately the owners of the home had not been paying the mortgage.  Instead it appears that they had been cashing the rent checks and using those funds for other expenses.  Now the bank is foreclosing on the property and wants … (12 comments)

military relocation virginia: Apples to Apples in Fairlington - 09/24/07 03:16 PM
As a Fairlington owner I have posted market reports over the last few months about general real estate trends in the neighborhood.  Last month I wrote a blog titled "Saying No to Local Market Reports" in which I said I would no longer post generic information about the area.  In keeping with that promise I decided this month for Fairlington I would focus on one popular model in the neighborhood and take a look at the prices from August 2006 and August 2007.
It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone to see prices are down 10% from the previous year.  The volume … (3 comments)

military relocation virginia: Fairfax County Wins it's Effort to Keep BRAC Jobs-So Now What? - 07/27/07 12:34 PM
After 2 years of study the Army today announced that they would not be moving all 22,000 jobs originally slated for Fort Belvoir from Crystal City and Pentagon as part of the BRAC proposal announced in 2005. The impact on the local traffic and roads close to the base in Lorton would have meant many years of additional construction and upwards of $500 million in road improvements.
The goal now is to use an abandoned warehouse area close to the Springfield Metro and VRE station as the new location for most of these jobs.  The hope is the site  within walking distance of the station will allow … (1 comments)

military relocation virginia: What has 50 Ramps and 20 Lanes? - 07/13/07 11:00 AM
If you live in Fairfax County then you may already know the answer to this little riddle.   It is the famous or is that infamous Springfield Interchange.   This intersection of 95/395/495 has been undergoing major construction for seven, yes that is right, seven years.
So what did this little $675,000,000 project accomplish?  Good question.  Reports have it that drivers will know be able to shave an incredible 30 seconds off of their commute from DC through Springfield.  Whoopee!   I grew up 4 blocks from where this little intersection grew into the monstrosity that it is today.  In fact, I learned … (6 comments)

military relocation virginia: Slugs…they aren’t just slimy crawly creatures - 07/10/07 09:41 AM

My daughter who lives in the town of Fareham in the UK has been plagued by slugs this summer.  They are feasting on her vegetable garden and even have found a way to get into the house.  Being the kind environmentalist that she is she has been looking for "natural" ways to rid herself of these creatures.  When I was young it was the salt shaker and cups of beer that did them in but she won't go that route.
Here in DC when you hear someone talking about slugs they aren't talking about slimy creatures but our unique way … (3 comments)

military relocation virginia: Show Me Your Google Map! - 07/07/07 11:42 AM
I've played with Google Maps and kept trying to figure out a great use.  Today I figured out one.  I'm working with an Army family relocating to the area from Fort Bragg.  Today was the day to see if we could find the right place.  We needed to find a place with public transportation options nearby due to the husband's work location and schedule.
Of course as we were driving around I was pointing out bus stops, commuter lots, slug lines and metro stations.  By the end of the afternoon we had two top contenders but they were very confused about … (9 comments)

military relocation virginia: Military Spouse Appreciation Day - 05/09/07 02:21 PM
Did you know that in 1984 President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother's Day of each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation Day?   The purpose of this special day is to thank military spouses for the support they give to their family and other military families, to honor their contributions to the communities where they live and to acknowledge the sacrifices they make every day in support of their military member and our country.
Since the day doesn't have a rack of Hallmark cards it may be overlooked by many of you as a day to honor the sacrifices that military … (3 comments)

military relocation virginia: What I'm Passionate About - 04/15/07 08:51 AM

Many years ago as a young military wife I found myself in a situation I had never imagined.  My husband (USAF) was injured in an accident in the Middle East and subsequently passed away.  Over the years various military services organizations provided support to me and my children with medical and education benefits.  These benefits helped reduced the financial strain I felt as a single mother.
When I changed careers five years ago and began my new role as a Realtor it was easy to decide that members of the armed forces would be one of my primary niche markets.  … (8 comments)

military relocation virginia: Tour de Fairfax County - 04/13/07 03:40 PM
From one end of Fairfax County to the other hikers, bikers, joggers and everyday walkers can now cover 40 miles of green shaded paths that cross streams and make connections to  two metro stations.  If you are really ambitious you can also connect to the WO & D trail and ride all the way to Purceville another 45 miles away.  Starting at Great Falls National Park on the Potomac River and following south to the Occoquan River and the Occoquan Regional Park the trail winds through some of the prettiest parts of Fairfax County.
Not all of the trail is a stroll in … (4 comments)
