pay it forward: It's Time To Give Thanksgiving Dinner Away-Our Pay It Foward Tradition - 11/14/11 02:12 AM
Personally I love shopping for Thanksgiving dinner.  Call me crazy but bags of potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie makings signal the start of the holidays. This year our family Thanksgiving will be in Denver and most of the shopping will be done by the time I get there.  Instead of missing the "official" start of the season I went to the grocery store yesterday and picked up items on the Thanksgiving list for our churches "Operation Turkey."  Frozen turkey, boxes of mashed potatoes, bags of stuffing, cans of green beans, jars of gravy, pie crusts and pumpkin pie filling all went … (17 comments)

pay it forward: Pay It Forward-Donatations For Those Who Lost Everything In Tropical Storm Lee - 09/18/11 04:02 AM
Tropical Storm Lee decided to hang over the Woobridge VA region for almost a week.  Though there was a lot of fear that the Occoqaun River would be the culprit for flooding it turned out it was the creeks feeding the river that caused the damage.  In the Town of Occoquan the Ballwick Creek above town overran it's banks and flooded part of the downtown area.  Less than a mile from my house, Route 1 was closed due to the flash flood caused by Marumsco Creek which wiped out a local neighborhood comprised of mobile homes, destroying over half of the … (10 comments)

pay it forward: Pay It Forward-Donating School Suppplies To Prince William County Schools - 08/27/11 12:58 AM
Normally my hatch contains an overflow of signs and sign riders.  This week I added a couple of bags from Target as well.  In the bags were a supply of lined paper, glue sticks and pens for donation to Prince William County SchoolsThere are students in the district that don't have the money for supplies and many times teachers are reaching into their own pockets to make sure students in their classrooms have everything they need.  With all of the sales on school supplies it doesn't cost much to fill up a couple of bags of supplies.  If you don't know … (8 comments)

pay it forward: Pay It Forward-Passing On The McDonald's Coupons To Someone Else - 08/21/11 12:08 PM
At least once every few months my mailbox includes a coupon book from McDonald's with about $20 worth of discounts.  Since my trips through Mickey D's are limited to grabbing a Diet Coke now and then the coupons generally end up in the trash.  Yesterday as I headed to the drive-in window with the most recent coupon book in the car I realized I should pass the coupons on to someone else.I noticed a family with 3 young children in tow crossing the parking lot.  Pulling up beside them I asked if they would like the coupon book (minus the free … (13 comments)

pay it forward: Pay It Forward-My Old Kitchen Put To Good Use For Habitat For Humanity - 08/14/11 10:04 AM
Even though the "old" kitchen wasn't in bad shape it didn't work very well.  The previous owner had taken a number of short cuts in installing the cabinets leaving gaps between them.  The cabinets were oak and the finish was in good shape.  Instead of hauling them to the dump we loaded up the car and headed to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Alexandria VA.The store accepts donations of new and used household items including kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, appliances and lighting fixtures to name a few things.  Having shopped at the store in the past for a few remodeling … (8 comments)

pay it forward: Pay It Forward-Creating Mosaics To Raise Money For Free Art Classes For Military Families - 08/06/11 11:33 AM
With school system budgets cuts one class often on the chopping block is art.    Yet almost any child  likes to create.  Whether its with it's with a crayon, construction paper and glue or pine cones covered with glitter the look of satisfaction when they are done is priceless.  To help keep the creativity going, every month a group of mosaic artists in Northern Virginia spend time creating  mosaic pieces to raffle to raise money for scholarships for Military families to attend free workshops at local mosaic studios in Northern Virginia.  In addition other local artists are contributing works to be … (3 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward-Nineteen Years of Honoring Our Warriors At The Holidays - 12/12/10 06:38 AM
The day was cold and overcast but volunteers who come from around the United States take a few hours making sure those who gave their lives are not forgotten during the holidays. This year the crowd was much larger than the last few years.    The message is simple:
Remember the Fallen Honor those who ServeTeach the Value of Freedom to Our Children

There are very few dry eyes among the volunteers and as a family escort I can tell you the emotions for the families involved are raw.  The Wreaths Across America project has a lofty goal for next year.  … (16 comments)
