Personally I love shopping for Thanksgiving dinner. Call me crazy but bags of potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie makings signal the start of the holidays. This year our family Thanksgiving will be in Denver and most of the shopping will be done by the time I get there. Instead of missing the "official" start of the season I went to the grocery store yesterday and picked up items on the Thanksgiving list for our churches "Operation Turkey." Tropical Storm Lee decided to hang over the Woobridge VA region for almost a week. Though there was a lot of fear that the Occoqaun River would be the culprit for flooding it turned out it was the creeks feeding the river that caused the damage. In the Town of Occoquan the Ballwick Creek above town overran it's banks and flooded part of the downtown area. Normally my hatch contains an overflow of signs and sign riders. This week I added a couple of bags from Target as well. In the bags were a supply of lined paper, glue sticks and pens for donation to Prince William County SchoolsThere are students in the district that don't have the money for supplies and many times teachers are reaching into their own pockets to make sure students in their classrooms have everything they need. At least once every few months my mailbox includes a coupon book from McDonald's with about $20 worth of discounts. Since my trips through Mickey D's are limited to grabbing a Diet Coke now and then the coupons generally end up in the trash. Even though the "old" kitchen wasn't in bad shape it didn't work very well. The previous owner had taken a number of short cuts in installing the cabinets leaving gaps between them. The cabinets were oak and the finish was in good shape. Instead of hauling them to the dump we loaded up the car and headed to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Alexandria VA.The store accepts donations of new and used household items including kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, appliances and lighting fixtures to name a few things. With school system budgets cuts one class often on the chopping block is art. Yet almost any child likes to create. Whether its with it's with a crayon, construction paper and glue or pine cones covered with glitter the look of satisfaction when they are done is priceless. The day was cold and overcast but volunteers who come from around the United States take a few hours making sure those who gave their lives are not forgotten during the holidays.
