things to do in va: Hi Mr. Jefferson Thanks For Letting Us Stop By Your House - 05/13/12 09:49 AM
This weekend was a chance for a little R&R in the Virginia Countryside.  Headed to Charlottsville and enjoyed wandering the grounds at Monticello with my 5 year old granddaugther.  She had studied Thomas Jefferson in her Colorado kindergarden this year and was excited to get the chance to visit his house.
She's headed home with pictures to share with her class and said the biggest thrill was walking underneath the house through the tunnels.  Considering she had a major fall just a few days before and her face was bruised and swollen she was a trooper.  Best Mother's Day ever!

things to do in va: Take A Stroll Around Lucketts Store-You'll Find Lots Of Surprises - 03/11/12 09:40 AM
Lucketts Store is hard to describe.  First thing to say is that it isn't exactly a "store".  There is an antique shop, a design house and multiple venues spread out across the grounds.  No matter where you look you can find a treasure.  Some of the treasures are small pieces of jewlery or maybe a glass knob.  Others are larger than a breadbox and might even be the size of a horse.
Built 1910, the house was originally the Lucketts post office, general store and Lucketts family home.   Every month the design house features new arrivals set up in venues throughout … (4 comments)

things to do in va: Weems-Bott Museum-Are You Brave Enough To Tour This Dumfries Landmark? - 10/27/11 05:18 AM
It looks innocent enough.  A small house located just off the main road through Dumfries Virginia. If you ask local historians and ghost hunters they will tell you the Weems-Bott Museum is not for the faint of heart.  The museum is listed as the 2nd most haunted spot in Virginia.

Lets start with a little history.  The town of Dumfries is the oldest charter city in Virginia.  At one point it was a bustling seaport but silt from the Potomac River eventually closed the port.  The museum is named after two of the owners.  The first was Mason Weems, … (17 comments)

things to do in va: Tuesday Stroll In Northern Virginia-Wandering the Grounds Of Woodlawn Plantation - 10/04/11 08:57 AM
Woodlawn Plantation is just a few miles from George Washington's home of Mount Vernon and there is a reason for that.  Woodlawn Plantation was built for George Washington’s grand-daughter Nelly Custis-Lewis.  The home is a classic Federal brick home built between 1800-1805.  The home was designed by William Thornton who also designed the US Capitol in Washington DC only 20 miles north along the Potomac River. The estate was originally comprised of over 2,000 acres and if you stand at the top of Gray's Hill you can still catch a gilmpse of the Potomac River in the distance.  Just like many of … (18 comments)

things to do in va: Tuesday Stroll In Northern Virginia-Our Covered Bridges Don't Compare To Lancaster PA - 09/20/11 01:11 PM
Cal Yoder resides in beautiful Lancaster County PA photographs and writes terrific blogs about the covered bridges in his area.  His posts remind me how important it is to preserve our history even if it is something as modest as a covered bridge.  When I owned a home in the Shenandoah Valley of VA the Meem's Bottom Bridge was a few miles from my house.  Just like one of the bridges Cal wrote about Siegrist Mill Covered Bridge, the Meems Bottom Bridge also was destroyed by floods in 1870 and 1877.  It was rebuilt in 1878 and was still standing as … (8 comments)

things to do in va: Winkler Botanical Preserve A Small Slice of Paradise in Alexandria VA - 09/01/11 09:38 AM
Winkler Botanical Preserve is one of those little treasures those of us who live in urban areas like to find.  Tucked off a busy I-395 you enter a 44 acre preserve containing wildflower meadows, meandering paths, streams and ponds.  Though you can hear traffic sounds faintly in the distance you feel as though you are far away from it all.
The park was established in 1980 by the Winkler family and unlike most of the parks in the Northern Virginia area is managed by a private, non profit organization.  The mission of Winkler Botanical Preserve is to provide education on the … (4 comments)

things to do in va: Away From The Maddening Crowds-Theodore Roosevelt Island - 05/08/11 09:00 AM
Most tourists in DC head to the National Mall and gather around all of the large national monuments. What the natives of the area know is that just a few miles down the road from the hustle and bustle of all of the activities is a small piece of history and a memorial often overlooked by anyone visiting (or living) in the area. Theodore Roosevelt Island was original purchased by the TR Memorial Association in 1931, however it was 35 years before the memorial was completed and the island dedicated in 1967.With 88 acres the island is maintained by the National … (8 comments)

If you are an amphibian or reptile being green can be a  good thing.  In this case a little green pond scum can make you blend right in to your surroundings.  This fellow is just one of many critters you can find at local Northern Virginia parks.  Get out and enjoy the cooler fall weather at a park close to your home.  A little walk on the wild side might just be what your business needs for a fall tune-up.
