Today across the United States there are both private and public remembrances of September 11, 2001. It is a day that most of us have seared into our memories as to where we were and how we felt.
Prince William County VA lost members of the local communities both in the Pentagon and in NYC. Many do not know that at the Prince William County Government Center there are two memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives.

Just about 48 hours ago we were listening to the warnings of severe thunderstorms rolling in to Northern Virginia, DC and MD. The "Derecho" storm arrived at 10:30 PM and instantly knocked about power to over 1/2 million people in the area. Belmont Bay was black for almost 24 hours with power coming back on at 8 PM Saturday night. Fortunately in our area the damage was minimal. The Belmont Bay marina and boats suffered no damage.For others they weren't so lucky and some are still without power tonight. Milwaukee Frozen Custard has been a favorite of Northern Virginia residents for a long time and the lines outside of the store on a Friday nights are any indication.
Instead of 31 flavors you will find daily specials of soft serve custard that stands up well in a cone and isn't to sweet. The first store opened in Chantilly VA after the owner Al Casey couldn't find custard similar to what he was used to in his home town. Even though we've had frost on the ground the last couple of days this rose is still blooming and gives any one who walks by a beautiful show and a wonderful whiff of sweet aroma. It goes to show that Mother Nature doesn't always follow the rules when it comes to seasonal wear.

Rippon Lodge in Woodbridge VA was built around 1747 and still stands today as the oldest still standing home in Prince William County VA. Though it is not as grand as other local historical homes, Rippon Lodge has a beautiful vantage point across Neabsco Creek and played a significant role in Virginia history. The Santa Express Train is getting ready to roll in Northern Virginia and tickets for the annual event go on sale November 14, 2010 starting at 5 am at the Woodbridge Station. Most residents of Prince William County don't know that Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge even exists. However it does and has since 1970 when the first 164 acres with access to the Occoquan River were acquired. Now comprising 325 acres the property is still closed to the public. For reasons that no longer make sense.
With its location at the intersection of Occoquan and Potomac Rivers it would be an ideal spot for bird watching. Both Osprey and Bald Eagles nest there. It is spring cleaning time. Not only for our own homes but for the shoreline of the local Northern Virginia rivers and creeks. This weekend's clean up along the Occoquan River produced a few bags of trash and a nice selection of tires as well.
