brevard nc real estate: Lessons learned from turkeys - 12/01/08 01:01 PM
I don't have a long standing relationship with turkeys. I've dated a few in my life..but those are stories for another day. So when I think of Thanksgiving, I'm suddenly 9 years old again. My mother is busy in the kitchen cooking all the family favorites, there's a fire in the fireplace, friends of the family are there, and life is good. After dinner, there's ambrosia and fresh made coconut cake for sure. But sometimes, there was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a bit of creme de menthe on top. Now that was living large! Over time our family … (2 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Things to do in Brevard, NC - 12/01/08 11:21 AM
There's nothing quite like the holidays in a small town like Brevard, North Carolina. Main Street is festooned with lights and Christmas decorations and people just seem to be in a really good mood, despite the dire reports on the nightly news. When it snows, like it did today, it makes the whole area look like a cross between a Norman Rockwell painting and a Courier and Ives postcard. So if you're planning on being in the area during the month of December, here are a few things to in Brevard, North Carolina.

brevard nc real estate: 3 Ways to Remember Our Troops this Holiday Season - 11/20/08 06:26 AM

The holiday season is upon us. In the weeks ahead, as you go about your day making plans, we'd like to ask that you remember the men and women of our military who will be spending their holiday season serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and those who are in hospitals, recovering from injuries they sustained.   Like many of you, we have friends who have children who are still deployed and today I got an email that really summed things up for me. My friend Shelia wrote "The wounded/recovering soldiers seem to be the truly forgotten folks. The news seems … (0 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Brevard, NC Market Report - September 2008 - 10/17/08 08:32 AM
AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL CLOSING PRICE
September numbers are back down to reality. In August I reported that according to our MLS numbers, the average residential closing in Transylvania County was $536,148. However, since Lake Toxaway, a very high end community where homes routinely sell for millions of dollars, is part of our MLS, whenever a home sells in that community, it causes all sorts of spikes in our otherwise consistent data.
In September the average closing price was $217,152. A year ago, the average was $244,503.

brevard nc real estate: Very Cool Site for Music - 10/13/08 07:12 AM
If you love music, you'll love this site. As the promo says it's like creating your own radio station with only the music you enjoy. I have ITunes on my computer that I often have on when I'm working, but this is even better because I can customize it to suite only my preferences.
Let's say you're a James Taylor fan (or Def Leppard...it's your choice). You can create a "station" that plays nothing but James Taylor music. Now, let's say you also like Yo-Yo Ma. So you create a station with his music. You can listen to one station with … (5 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Fall for Brevard, North Carolina - 09/24/08 08:12 AM
Fall has officially arrived here in the mountains, bringing with it, shorter days and cool, crisp air - both necessary ingredients for a great leaf season. In higher elevations like Cashiers and Highlands just west of Brevard, North Carolina you can already see the subtle change from green to yellow on some of the maple trees, and splashes of burgundy have begun to dot the mountain sides.
If you are planning a fall trip to the mountains of western North Carolina, experts tell us that peak leaf season should be starting around mid-October. Generally, you can count on great leaf color … (0 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Learning to embrace a competitive spirit - 09/21/08 06:51 AM
I never played sports when I was growing up. No one in my family did. And although both of my parents graduated from colleges with strong football programs, we never dressed in team colors and gathered around the TV on Sunday afternoons to watch their teams play. We didn't notice the Army/Navy football game even though both of my parents were Navy veterans. The same familial indifference to sports applied to professional teams. Fact is, I can't remember a single moment from my past when sports was even a topic of discussion around the dinner table. Maybe this can explain my … (1 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Tell 'em what they've won, Johnny! - 09/15/08 04:34 AM
This morning I watched a short video on Inman about how consumers are in control these days. I don't disagree. Today, buyers and sellers have access to the MLS and countless real estate search engines. They read, they research, and by the time they call a Realtor, they're already very informed. So what really motivates a buyer to buy when the world is their oyster and sellers are clamoring for a contract? After you get past the basic needs like the number of bedrooms, location, etc., what makes them pull the trigger? Do buyer incentives work? Today I saw a new listing … (15 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Brevard Area Market Report -August - 09/08/08 09:11 AM
RESIDENTIAL SALES SUMMARY - August 2008

RESIDENTIAL SALES SUMMARY
When you start crunching real estate numbers in Transylvania County, which includes Brevard and a number of neighboring communities, you must take into consideration that Lake Toxaway, a community where most homes are in the millions of dollars, is part of Transylvania County. So when there are sales in Lake Toxaway, it will skew the data for the whole MLS board. This is the case in August and to a lesser extent, July. In August, the average residential sales price soared to $536,148 which represents more than an 110% increase over … (0 comments)

brevard nc real estate: A Taste of Transylvania - 09/02/08 02:29 AM
Before I go any further, I should explain that this is not some sort of vampire fest. Transylvania County, home of Brevard, is located in beautiful western North Carolina and got it's name from its founders. In Latin it roughly means "Across the woods".

With that out of the way, let's talk about food! On September 16, you can sample food from 15 area restaurants at the annual Taste of Transylvania. Tasty samplings from the area's best restaurants is just the beginning though. There is a silent auction where you can bid on items that showcase our wonderful mountain lifestyle. … (0 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Brevard, NC Restaurant Review - 08/29/08 09:48 AM
One of the newest places on the restaurant scene in Brevard, NC is ED Boudreaux's Bayou Bar-B-Que. If you like your BBQ freshly smoked and served up with fresh-made sides like creole baked beans, sweet potato fries, collards, or andouille cheddar grits, then you're going to love this place. It opened on July 5 at 20 McLean Rd. just a bit west of Ingles grocery store.
We stopped in for lunch recently and I'm looking forward to going back soon. I ordered the Applewood Smoked Pulled Pork and since all the BBQ platters come with two sides and Texas toast I … (2 comments)

brevard nc real estate: Dinner and magic - 08/07/08 07:41 AM
The other night my husband Robert and I went to a neighborhood restaurant for a bite to eat with some friends of ours. Jimmy Macs is on Hwy 64 in Cashiers, NC, just before the cross roads at Hwy 107. It's the kind of place that I  love to go to for dinner when I don't feel like cooking. The food is reasonably priced and consistently good.
When we were there this particular nite, we got a little extra something with our dessert. Our friend introduced us to one of the servers, and told us that he was a great magician. … (1 comments)
