Snug Harbor is becoming a Mecca for the artistically gifted as evidenced by the recent institution of a program that had been defunct for 6 years. The Snug Harbor Artist Residency Program will bring contemporary artists to the grounds of Snug Harbor to live and create art that can be exhibited in the center's galleries. Artists in residence will undoubtedly have countless references for inspiration on the centers 80+ acres of gardens and the surrounding neighborhood's distinctive homes.

The Snug Harbor neighborhood in Staten Island is a very old one. The anchor of the entire neighborhood is Sailor's Snug Harbor or Snug Harbor Cultural Center as it is currently known. Originally instituted as a home for retired sailors it has now become the site of Staten Island's 80+ acres of botanical gardens, historically significant buildings and jaw dropping architecture, museums, art galleries, theaters, a vineyard and even a chapel. 
The homes in the area mirror Snug Harbor's history in their diversity: sprawling 19th century Victorians, beautiful authentic colonials and even row homes give Snug Harbor her character.
