Friday's Foto - Rapids On The Hood River

I took this photo of the Hood River today at Tucker Park just off the Dee Highway, about five miles south of the town of Hood River. We walked out onto the rocks, but didn't take our cameras out in case we slipped off! The roar of the rapids was almost so loud we could barely hear each other talking.

This Girl's All Puppy... Meet Willow!

This funny puppy is Willow and she's just 9 weeks old. Full of energy and always wanting to play, Willow is a happy, playful girl. She's going to need lots of attention and work to teach her the manners she needs, but the breed is famous for learning quickly. Her sweet disposition tells us she'll try hard to please, although her lack of doggie manners means she probably shouldn't be around small children. She loves other dogs, but an older one might get a little annoyed with her antics. Oh, and she's an escape … (4 comments)

Wordless Wednesday - Another Quaint Country Home

If you've read many of my posts, you know I love finding and sharing older, charming homes with classic architecture. This one is located about four miles south of Hood River, just off Highway 35. I don't know the year it was built because it's not a registered historic home, I believe because it hasn't been maintained to standards required for registry. In fact, it looks like there's work currently under way and I'm guessing it was built 1910-ish. I still found it intriguing, so here it is.

International Leader In Unmanned Aircraft Systems Located Right Here In The Columbia Gorge: Insitu, Inc.

I have to say, it's one of the least expected industries here in small town, outdoor oriented Columbia River Gorge.  Insitu, Inc. is an international pioneer and leading provider of small tactical unmanned aircraft systems. To most of us and in layman's terms that means "little remote control airplanes". And Insitu is located just across the river from Hood River, in Bingen, Washington.
The planes were developed primarily for military uses in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and for commercial objectives alike. Put simply, these remote control airplanes can … (1 comments)

Speechless Sunday - Timberline In Summer

I took the first photo of the top of Mt. Hood at Timberline Ski Resort a couple weeks ago, just before dusk. The second photo is the view from the Timberline Lodge. Oh, and here's the Timberline Lodge, too. You can see the haze from the Dollar Lake Fire, although just days later, the smoke worsened to the point you couldn't even see the mountain. The fire continues to burn and spread.

The View From The Columbia River, Part 3: The Native American Fishing Platforms

Our family first rode the Gorge Sternwheeler almost three years ago and until then then I had not heard one of the most unique and intriguing issues regarding the Columbia River... that of Native American fishing rights on the river. Historically, the Columbia River was one of the largest spawning area for salmon in the entire world. Because of that, the native tribes of the area incorporated fishing not only into the economy of their lives, but into their spirituality. Fishing was an integral part of … (3 comments)

Hood River Starts The 2011 Youth Football Season With A Bang!

Our 10-year-old son, Ben, plays Gorge Youth Tackle Football for Hood River, 5-6th grades, team #2 and his team started the season brilliantly today with a 36 to 6 victory over Stevenson! The soaring heat didn't slow them down a bit as they made three touch downs in the first quarter alone. It's Ben second year playing and he's working hard as a defensive linebacker and an offensive guard. Practices started three weeks ago and Ben went to football camp for two weeks before that. This team has worked … (0 comments)

Friday's Foto - Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Multnomah Falls is located just 20 miles east of Portland, just off I-84, near the town of Corbett, Oregon. It's about a 40 minute drive from Hood River. Multnomah is the fifth largest waterfall in the United States with a drop of over 600 feet into the Columbia River Gorge below. I took this photo almost three weeks ago when I visited the falls with our sons and my parents. You can barely make out people on the footbridge part way up, which gives scale to the falls, showing how huge they really are.

Fire Update: Mt. Hood Dollar Lake Fire

Compared to the catastrophic wild fires in Texas, our little fire on Mt. Hood seems barely significant. But it is to us. The fire has burned over 4,500 acres and there are currently 700 firefighters working the fire, with support from 6 helicopters and more than a dozen bulldozers, clearing fire lines. Extreme terrain makes the fire especially hard to fight. One of the largest concerns is the fire is just 3 miles from the Bull Run Resevoir, which is the main water provider through the city of Portland. Today, increasing winds … (1 comments)

Clock Tower Ales, The Dalles, Oregon

This is the popular The Dalles restaurant Clock Tower Ales. The restaurant is located in the second historical county courthouse building in downtown The Dalles. I stopped to photograph the building before I even knew what was inside because the architecture intrigued me. The courthouse was built in 1881 in the then popular style of Italianate. It housed county offices, the courthouse and the jail until 1914 when the current courthouse was built. After that time, the building was used for meetings of the Masonic Orders and even as a funeral parlor.
The current … (2 comments)

The View From The Columbia River, Part 2:  Looking Up & Down River

I never stop marveling over what a grand and awesome sight the beautiful Columbia River Gorge is. Viewing it from a vantage point actually on the river offers a whole new perspective. I took these photos from onboard the Sternwheeler last weekend.

This is a look at a barge heading upriver:

Speechless Sunday - The Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River

The Bonneville Dam is located just a couple miles west of the Cascade Locks and spans the scenic Columbia River. There are visitors' centers on both the Oregon and Washington sides of the dam that are open daily from 9 to 5. I took this photo last weekend from just above the dam, on the Columbia River.

If Loveable and Fun Is For You... Meet Lacy Jean!

Talk about eager to please! Lacy Jean is happy, loveable and fun, always out for a good time. And what a cuddler! Lacy hasn't met someone she doesn't like and that goes for dogs, too. She also just loves to fetch and would probably do it until she dropped. Lacy Jean is about 60 pounds and probably around one year old. She's as smart as they come and she's picked up all sorts of commands already at the shelter. If you were to just meet this happy pup, you'd … (2 comments)

The View From The Columbia River, Part 1:  On Board The Sternwheeler

My parents recently visited us in Oregon and since it was my father's first time here, we planned a lot of tourist type activities. Last time I did most of these activities, I wasn't blogging so I am excited to take advantage of the new photos I took. Last Sunday, we took a brunch cruise on the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler, an authentically designed (although a replica) river boat. Things certainly looked different when viewed from on the river.
On their website, the operator of the Sternwheeler calls it … (2 comments)

Friday's Foto - The Bridge of the Gods, Columbia River Gorge
I love this bridge. It crosses the Columbia, between Cascade Locks, Oregon and Stevenson, Washington. I took this from on-board the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler last weekend, which provided a different perspective than on land. I love how delicate it looks from afar, almost spider-web like.

Friday's Foto - Mt. Hood Is Burning!
I took this photo this evening around 8 p.m. from Highway 35, just 1/4 mile from our home on the north side of Mt. Hood. The "Dollar Lake Fire", as it is being called, is about 15 to 20 miles from our house, has already burned 1,700 acres and is less than 5% contained. This morning we woke to choking smoke filling our valley as high pressure trapped smoke from rising. That cleared by mid-morning, thank goodness. Meanwhile, the region feels like a war zone as helicopters fill the air and fire trucks continuously go … (4 comments)

Paradise In Hood River... Pearadise Creamery!
So, the store has been open in Hood River for a year now but I only recently discovered it myself. If you even like frozen yogurt you'll love this place. And your kids will love it even more! With dozens of yogurt flavors that rotate regularly, the store offers six yogurt choices daily. Then the real fun begins. There are tons and tons of toppings... everything from candies like m&ms and gummi worms, to cereals and fruit. The list goes on and on, maybe 40 toppings I would guess. And it's all self serve. You can … (0 comments)

Bonneville Dam Fish Hatchery... From Pre-historic to Modern Technology

Okay, right up front I want to admit that the hatchery was NOT something I had any interest in whatsoever. But my parents were visiting from out of state and my dad, the trip driver, wanted to stop so we did. I'm so glad we did. It's definitely worth a look.
The hatchery raises 8 million Fall Chinook, 1.2 million Coho, 200 thousand Summer Steelhead, and 60 thousand Winter Steelhead. Opened in 1909, the Bonneville Hatchery remains the largest fish hatchery in Oregon. Adult salmon begin arriving at the hatchery in September … (0 comments)

Visit Vista House At Crown Point, Columbia River Gorge

We've lived here for just over four years and last weekend finally took the exit off I-84 to see Vista House at Crown Point. Located an easy 45 minutes from Hood River it is maybe the best possible vantage point of the Columbia River Gorge.
The Vista House was built in 1916-1918 as a memorial to area pioneers and as a comfort station for folks traveling the Historic Columbia Highway. It is a stone, octoganal building that towers 733 feet above the Columbia River and is registered with the National … (1 comments)
