Driving through The Dalles this week I saw two new car dealerships under contruction. It was only a year or two ago that car dealerships were closing by the dozens and those still in business offered outrageously great deals just to get some customers onto the lot. And now two new dealerships will be opening. It's not even August yet, but we're gearing up for football season, which for us means fall is coming. Both our 10 and 12 year old sons play youth tackle football and this week they took a football camp in The Dalles, 20 miles east of Hood River.

Fun At The Hood River County Fair!
We could smell the kettle korn, carnitas and hay before we even went in the gate. Then we heard screams of kids on scary rides, bells ringing as someone wins a game and a rooster crowing somewhere nearby. Colorful banners floated in the wind and lights flashed on the rides and food booths. Yep, the fair is here!

Hood River finally, FINALLY broke the 90 degree mark today! The Pacific Northwest has been experiencing one of the coolest summers in years. Believe me, we are not complaining, especially knowing how hot most of the rest of the country has been. And knowing that tomorrow the expected high will only be about 75. So we'll enjoy it while we can... perfect day to hit the river!

This is our dog Jax (with our son Sam), a Newfoundland who we adopted from an animal shelter in Walla Walla Washington about 4 1/2 years ago. This ia a rare photo of Jax, as this 115 pound softie is afraid of cameras. Jax is one of our four rescued dogs... we know, we know, that's a lot of dogs, but that's not so uncommon around here. This Guy Is Calm, Happy & Charming... Meet Gilbert!
This handsome guy actually showed up at the shelter died purple! He doesn't seem to mind, though, and the color just seems fitting to his outgoing personality (it will also grow out soon). Gilbert is a chihuahua mix and is probably around three years old. He is so easy going, happy, playful and gets along with everyone. If you haven't visited the Western Antique Automobiles and Airplanes Museum in Hood River, Sunday would be a good day to go. July 24th is Amelia Earhart's birthday and the month of July is "Women In Aviation" month. Women pilots get in FREE Sunday, when they show their pilot license.

The Hood River County Fair starts in just one week and runs July 27th through the 30th! It's the highpoint of the summer for our boys. Many friends have spent months raising pigs, goats etc. for 4H, so it's the culmination of months of work. In short, the fair is HUGE around here.

In 2006, Mt. Hood experienced a natural phenomenon called a glacial outbreak. That's when part of a glacier melts into water that is trapped by ice. When the ice breaks and the water is suddenly released a glacial outbreak is the result. It's a huge amount of water suddenly headed straight down mountain. The outbreak destroyed some roads and flooded the Hood River. This is a bridge that was washed out on the East Fork of the Hood River.

Yesterday I posted Part 1 of Mel's hike with our boys on the Tamanawas Falls Trail on Monday. The trail is located just off Highway 35, 40 miles south of Hood river and five miles north of Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort. The trail follows the east fork of the Hood River, is 2 miles each way and is rated as "easy", as the trail isn't steep and is fairly smooth.
After almost two miles, they finally caught sight of the falls...
