Speechless Sunday - Columbia River Gorge Under An Autumn Sky

This is the Eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge and the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge. Mel took this photo from the Washington side of the Gorge not far from Goldendale yesterday late afternoon. I love the way the light filters through the clouds, then reflects off the river.

Wordless Wednesday - The Columbia River Gorge from Vista House

The Columbia River Gorge is such a gorgeous natural phenomenon, a river carved canyon separating the states of Oregon and Washington. I took this shot from the Vista House view point on the west end of the gorge, looking east. Vista House at Crown Point is located at 40700 Historic Columbia River Highway, or the Corbett exit off Hwy. 84 (just 20 miles east of Portland).

Wordless Wednesday - Another Stellar Day on the Columbia River

Our kids can't seem to get enough of the beach/river during the summer so today found us there once again. It was a little windy for my taste (can you say sand in the Taco Bell we had taken with us?), but it brought out the windsurfers and kiteboarders in droves. This is the weather they live for! In case you don't know, the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River, Oregon are world famous for its windsurfing and kiteboarding as the unique geographical formation of the canyon provides optimum … (3 comments)

Silent Saturday - Sailing The Columbia River Gorge

The temperature, surprisingly, hit 90 degrees today so we headed to the river for the first time of the summer. Cooling off felt great and the scenery wasn't bad either. I never get tired of watching the sailboats, windsurfers and kiteboarders, all against the stunning back drop of the Cascade mountains.

Speechless Sunday - High Country

I took this photo on the way to a new client's house in Mill A, Washington this afternoon. As the name of the town suggests, this is logging country and although the photo doesn't show it as well as I would like, the drop off here is drastic, plummeting to the river hundreds of feet below. This is a mere four miles from the Columbia River. The peaks and valleys here are simply stunning.

Wordless Wednesday - Smooth Sailing On The Columbia River

The Columbia River makes for a gorgeous sail on an early spring afternoon. This photo was taken looking towards Hood River from the Washington side of the river. Our river offers such a wide variety of recreational opportunities, even when the water's still icy cold.

Wordless Wednesday - The Columbia River Through Winter Trees

This is another of Mel's photos. This is the Columbia River, as seen through winter trees from the city of Bingen, Washington, just across the river from the town of Hood River. I never get tired of photos of the river. You just can't beat mountains and water all in one gorgeous setting.

The View From The Columbia River, Part 2:  Looking Up & Down River

I never stop marveling over what a grand and awesome sight the beautiful Columbia River Gorge is. Viewing it from a vantage point actually on the river offers a whole new perspective. I took these photos from onboard the Sternwheeler last weekend.

This is a look at a barge heading upriver:

Speechless Sunday - The Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River

The Bonneville Dam is located just a couple miles west of the Cascade Locks and spans the scenic Columbia River. There are visitors' centers on both the Oregon and Washington sides of the dam that are open daily from 9 to 5. I took this photo last weekend from just above the dam, on the Columbia River.

The View From The Columbia River, Part 1:  On Board The Sternwheeler

My parents recently visited us in Oregon and since it was my father's first time here, we planned a lot of tourist type activities. Last time I did most of these activities, I wasn't blogging so I am excited to take advantage of the new photos I took. Last Sunday, we took a brunch cruise on the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler, an authentically designed (although a replica) river boat. Things certainly looked different when viewed from on the river.
On their website, the operator of the Sternwheeler calls it … (2 comments)

Friday's Foto - The Bridge of the Gods, Columbia River Gorge
I love this bridge. It crosses the Columbia, between Cascade Locks, Oregon and Stevenson, Washington. I took this from on-board the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler last weekend, which provided a different perspective than on land. I love how delicate it looks from afar, almost spider-web like.

Visit Vista House At Crown Point, Columbia River Gorge

We've lived here for just over four years and last weekend finally took the exit off I-84 to see Vista House at Crown Point. Located an easy 45 minutes from Hood River it is maybe the best possible vantage point of the Columbia River Gorge.
The Vista House was built in 1916-1918 as a memorial to area pioneers and as a comfort station for folks traveling the Historic Columbia Highway. It is a stone, octoganal building that towers 733 feet above the Columbia River and is registered with the National … (1 comments)

Speechless Sunday - Barging Down The Columbia River
Living near Hood River, a lot of us have come to think of the Columbia River as a recreation spot. The truth is the Columbia is a "working" river, a lifeline spanning states. The amount of commerce that uses the river to transport goods of all types, would crumble without the river. They aren't beautiful, but they are vital to the economy of the northwest. I took this photo on Friday from Highway 84, just outside Hood River. The train track runs alongside the river, too.

columbia river gorge: Bridge Of The Gods Kiteboarding Festival This Weekend! - 08/18/11 10:14 AM

Bridge Of The Gods Kiteboarding Festival This Weekend!

Once again, the Columbia River Gorge will live up to its reputation as the premier kiteboarding destination in the United States. In case you don’t know, kiteboarding is a sport where the athlete stands on a specialized “board” and hangs onto the rigging going to a huge kite. The geological construction of the Columbia River Gorge offers an uncommon, windy location that not only moves the athlete, but can lift him far off the water where he can perform tricks.
From all over the US, kiteboarders will be competing August 19 … (0 comments)

A Slice of US History - The Historic Columbia River Highway
Interstate 84 is the freeway that travels from Portland to The Dalles and beyond, running through the Columbia River Gorge, one of the most scenic roads in Oregon, maybe in the region. The less traveled Historic Columbia River Highway is an approximately 75-mile scenic highway between Troutdale and The Dalles, Oregon. The road was built through the Columbia River Gorge between 1913 and 1922 and was the first planned scenic roadway in the United States. The scenery is well worth the detour. The highway is on the National Register of Historic Places as a National … (1 comments)

columbia river gorge: Hood River County SNOW DAY! - 01/12/11 02:12 PM

There are few things more exciting to a couple kids than that phone call that came at 5:30 a.m., announcing that today was going to be a snow day. The tv news confirmed it: The Hood River County School District was officially closed for the day following a night of snow which was then turning into freezing rain.
Suddenly, thoughts of homework, gym clothes and meetings changed to plans of sledding, playing video games and, yes, napping. Today's snow day came in the midst of a winter with well above average snow levels, exciting to some, inconvenient to others. We … (1 comments)

columbia river gorge: Youth Basketball in the Columbia Gorge - 01/11/11 04:35 PM

Youth league basketball started last week in the Columbia River Gorge. Our son plays for the Parkdale, third and fourth grade team, practicing twice a week, then with games beginning at the end of January. We're amazed at how much the boys grow through the season as they learn the game better and get in better condition. We love all the friends we've made by attending practices and games. There's a true sense of community.
