Today, March 23rd, is the 7th annual National Puppy Day! It's a day created to honor the special relationship and unconditional love that puppies bring into our lives. But it goes further than that. It's also a day to promote saving rescue puppies, as opposed to adopting from pet stores and puppy mills.

The folks at the shelter aren't really sure what breeds make up this lovely girl, but whatever they are, they blend beautifully. It's been more than five weeks since I first wrote about poor Fuji and he is still at the Hukari Animal Shelter, still yearning and dreaming that someone will finally fall in love with him and take him home to love forever. Ike is a super fun, loveable and playful, older guy who is a black lab/English bulldog mix. He's probably around 8 years old, but has the energy of a much younger pup. Little Emmie is just about as sweet as they come. This tiny little bundle of fun is a chihuahua mix who is about three years old and just can't seem to get enough attention. She can be a bit shy at first, but warms up quickly and ends up loving everyone around her. She's even great with kids, who she lets dress her up and she loves to get her long hair brushed. Lolla Lee Lou and her sister, Cindy Lou Who, are the sweetest little babies you'll ever find. The vet is guessing they're around seven weeks old and they are just tiny at less than four pounds each. They seem to be chihuahua, dachshund mix and are absolutely beautiful. These poor little girls were found abandoned in front of a business in weather far too cold for them, leaving them scared and traumatized. Reading about this gorgeous girl, just broke my heart. Her long-time owner recently passed away and there was just no place else for this sweet pup to go, but to the shelter. Noche is an adorable, 4 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso boy. This guy is Mr. Social Butterfly, loves to make new friends and seems to adore every dog, cat or person he meets... even kids. This little guy has been through a lot and somehow ended up with two fractures on his hip joint. He has taken the problem well, remains happy and cheerful and has been content to settle into shelter workers' laps while he recovers. Mini Pearl is a beautiful Chihuahua mix with gorgeous, unique markings. She is about 3 years old and maybe 10 pounds of calm, patient, dignified pup. This poor guy was abandoned when his owner unexpectedly moved. Luckily a neighbor stepped in to take care of him, but can't keep him long term so Pupper is looking for a new forever home. That's just the easiest way to describe Gustave... he's just happy, happy, happy. That tail is always wagging away, he's eager and excited for whatever is coming his way next.
