weather: Turn the Clock 2012: Worthington - 03/10/12 04:54 AM
Worthington, Ohio: Turn the Clock .... I guess that means spring forward!

Turn the clocks tonight or you'll be late for everything on Sunday.
What a different winter we had this year!  The time change for Daylight Savings snuck up on me this year.  We were walking in Highbanks Metro Park on Wednesday and wondering when the time change was.... It felt like spring on Wednesday, no coats... sun shining, flowers blooming.

weather: Delaware County, Ohio is springing forward in 2012 - 03/09/12 09:35 PM
Delaware County, Ohio it's time to Spring Forward!

Daylight Saving Time   A fun site with facts about Daylight Saving Time includes grammar... Is it Daylight Saving Time or Daylight Savings Time?  They say it is NOT Daylight Savings Time.  Oooops on a post on my Columbus site I say "Daylight Savings Time" to match the image on that version of the 2012 reminder to spring forward.  A Daylight Saving Time grammar lesson:  "Saving is used as a verbal adjective - a participle. It modifies time and tells us about it's nature, namely that it is characterized by … (2 comments)

weather: Central Ohio: OooOoo That Smell - 02/27/12 08:50 PM
Central Ohio smells like skunk for a good reason.  I quote Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks on Facebook "OooOoo that smell...can't you smell that smell?"  On Facebook Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks says that smell is a sign of spring.
Yahoo!
Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis)
Do we smell Mephitis mephitis in central Ohio?  Or do we smell another type of skunk?
I smelled that smell outside last week one time during the night and wondered if it was a sign of spring.  I Googled whether skunks hibernated, thinking that would be how that smell would be a sign of … (2 comments)

Spring is Around the Corner for Columbus Ohio according to Buckeye Chuck

Can you send belated Groundhog Day cards?
Buckeye Chuck in Marion Ohio did not see his shadow yesterday morning so we will NOT have another six week of winter in Columbus, Ohio.  Of course we really have not had much winter weather at all this year.
Punxatawny Phil did see his shadow this morning so he is predicting six weeks more of winter.   I hear Buckeye Chuck has a better record when it comes to accuracy.   According to people who keep track of this. Or can remember … (1 comments)

weather: Columbus Ohio: Beating the Winter Blues - 01/24/12 02:39 PM
Columbus Ohio is not always sunny in the winter (there's an understatement.)   I was glad to see sunshine on Monday morning before the rain came.  I should have run out and grabbed some pictures but I did not.  I need a sunnier photo of Worthington for my Facebook profile.

Winter in Columbus Ohio is "Kinda" Blue
I have a new "Fresh Facts" from First Watch in my mailbox from their Sun eClub this morning.  This month (maybe the Sun eClub newsletter comes out more or less often?) is about "Beat the Winter Blues in 5 Easy Steps."  Lack of … (3 comments)

weather: Weather is local - 08/27/11 01:19 AM
Duh!  Of course it is. I blogged about local weather and Active Rain on my Columbus Best Blog today**  We get more rain than Seattle (according to an Ohio Blog) but Seattle's welcome to keep the 'Rain City' title as far as I am concerned.
Columbus Ohio was tied with Tulsa Oklahoma and Oklahoma City **for the 9th most dangerous city as far as natural disasters. Recently Leanne Paynter of  Florida Real Estate Blog** stated her preference for hurricanes over earthquakes or tornadoes.
I prefer tornadoes. Maybe it is a midwestern thing.  Comfortable with your own surroundings? You can tell this is a … (8 comments)

weather: Dog Days of Summer - How hot is hot? - 08/09/11 04:23 AM
Dog Days of Summer - How hot is "hot"...  where you are?
Jason Neumann in Kelowna, British Columbia tweeted:

Canada is exotic to me...  we went to Ontario when I was in middle school. I have crossed the border a couple of times into Windsor, Canada from Detroit... maybe twice in my life.  I guess I went into Canada once at Niagra Falls now that I think about it. British Columbia is very exotic... to me.  It surprised me when Jason responded in ° Fahrenheit to my question of how hot hot was in Kelowna.

weather: time to take the sweaters off the trees Columbus - 03/31/10 11:20 PM
It is time to take the sweaters off the trees Columbus!   Winter is finally over, the daffodils are blooming, it is time to take tree sweaters off.  Arborists recommend tree sweaters be removed immediately as it is getting warm quickly in Central Ohio.

In an effort to make winter more comfortable some Columbus trees wore sweaters through the winter of  '2009 - 2010.' Pictured wearing a colorful sweater is a tree on Cherryfield Ave., Columbus Ohio 43235 in Worthington Hills.

Columbus Ohio is Buckeye Chuck Territory and he did NOT see his shadow!

Let the celebrations begin!  We are going to have an early Spring in Central Ohio if the little fella is right.
I heard it on Twitter this morning among the grumbles that other groundhogs did see their shadows.

If you live in Central Ohio now do gray days make you blue?
In a ranking of the top 40 US Metro areas Columbus ranked 31st.... (higher number is better..)
About Columbus from Forbes.com
"Columbus' most stressful factor is its low number of sunny and partly sunny days--only 175 in 2007. Columbus does have good air quality, for which it ranks 34th."

1950's video of Colonial Hills after a huge snowstorm....

I found the video via George Campbell's Colonial Hills History site. He says the storm in the video was in November 1950. November for anyone reading this from outside Central Ohio ... we don't usually have snow in November... a few flurries maybe...

Happy Arbor Day! It is "National"  Arbor Day in Ohio and IN, MI, MN,PA, VA, WI and more.
KY and WV already had theirs... their Arbor Day.  The National Arbor Day Foundation's site says
"What is Arbor Day?Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates according to their best tree-planting times."

weather: Helpful hint - air infiltration at window panels NEXT to the door - 02/06/09 03:07 AM

This is a re-blog of content from Central Ohio Home Inspector Rick Harrington.
I am a sucker for his Themal Scan photos.  He did one of his dog... warm cold nose.  Duh! Dog noses are supposed to be cold.
A home inspector did a thermal scan photo recently for a client of mine.  WOW!
We are going into a heat wave,  high 30's?  or low 40's this weekend after all the snow and ice.

While performing Thermal Scans with infrared camera here in the Central Ohio area,  (it is cold right now) clients are complaining of cold areas … (0 comments)

Happy Groundhogs Day from Columbus Ohio Yes it's that time again.  February 2, 2009 Happy Groundhog Day.
Buckeye Chuck in Marion  Ohio should be up soon to let US know whether we get six more weeks of winter or an early spring in Central Ohio.
Ohio History Central (part of the Ohio Historical Society) says of Buckeye Chuck
"From late September until early April, Buckeye Chuck spends his time hibernating. On February 2, against his will, Chuck emerges from his sleep to predict the weather. In 1979, the Ohio legislature made Buckeye Chuck Ohio's official groundhog."

weather: Calamity Days in Columbus - 01/29/09 12:45 AM
I am not sure when Ohio Schools started having "calamity days" rather than snow days.
Most Central Ohio schools are out of school today because of snow and ice.  They were out of school yesterday because of snow and ice.
Most Central Ohio Schools are at or over the limit for "calamity days" for the school year now.
I went looking for some official Ohio info about how many school days Ohio School districts have... what the rules are... and found a document (PDF)  for The Ohio General Assmbly that defined calamity days.
