Not long ago on Tucker Carlson's show he brought us a segment about the dogs that illegal immigrants are abandoning at the border. They bring them along, and then when the climb on a bus to go somewhere beyond the border, they simply leave them behind. Tucker's comment was that people who abandon their dogs to starve aren't the kind we need in this country. I agree. There aren't just a few. There are hundreds. And they're hungry. For the past several weeks I've been visiting Craig's List every day in search of that "just right" puppy for my husband - and it's breaking my heart. I keep seeing ads for young dogs that need new homes because the people are moving, are having a new baby, or the dog just does't "fit" the family. Quite a few say something along the lines of "This is a really nice dog, but he has no manners," or "We're never home to give him any attention." Last night my friend Susan called to ask me if I knew anything about a little brown dog that she had seen running on Eastside Road. She had seen it last night and the night before and was worried because it looked to be a dog who belonged in the house. After all, night-time temperatures are down near 20 degrees, so a tiny short haired dog doesn't belong outside.
