importance of proofreading: Why Brokers Should Review Agent Bios - 06/03/15 09:10 AM
This week an agent sent me a link to one of the bios on her broker's site in order to give me an example of how much space she'd be allowed for her own bio.
Reading it made me realize why I have a couple of broker clients who hire me to write their agents' bios rather than telling them to provide one.
Not only did that bio say nothing about why anyone should choose the agent, it was filled with garbled sentences and grammatical errors.
For instance (In making reference to the fact that she had been a business owner): "It was through … (34 comments)

importance of proofreading: The Case for Proofreading - 06/05/14 05:49 PM
In all of my grammar, spelling, and word-usage rants I point out that the wrong word in a sentence has two effects:
It confuses the reader, so they have to stop and think about what the writer meant - then the flow of the message is lost. It makes the writer look either uneducated or sloppy. Since none of us wants to look uneducated or sloppy, it pays to take the time to proofread. Or - to take the time to get someone else to proofread.
For someone like me who writes for a living, missed errors are especially embarrassing. After … (41 comments)

importance of proofreading: Are Your Email Messages Helping You or Hurting You? - 02/23/13 02:59 AM
Are your email messages helping you or hurting you?

When you answer an on-line inquiry or send information to a potential client who called on the phone, are you being just as careful as you were with those printed materials? Or are you in a hurry?
Misspelled words, misused words, typos, and rambling sentences can do a lot of damage to your … (4 comments)

importance of proofreading: What's the big deal about word choice, anyway? - 09/25/12 04:10 PM

And in some cases, writing to some audiences, they're right. If the reader doesn't know the difference between there and their or you're and your they'll "hear" the sounds and understand the words as they were meant. And, if they live in an area where me, myself, and I are routinely mis-used, … (54 comments)

importance of proofreading: Voice Recognition Software and Your Credibility - 12/03/11 09:43 AM
Do you use voice recognition software?
I thought about it, but decided against it. I do too much backing up and moving things around. And for some reason, I write better with my fingers than my voice. I've tried using a hand held recorder and everything comes out "stiff." I act kind of like I do when forced to talk in front of a group.

But that's just me. Other people do better with a recorder or voice recognition software.

There's just one problem with voice recognition software. If, like me, you happen to live with … (7 comments)
