In just one day this week - September 29 - I came across three instances where lack of proofreading made me think "Do these people even think about what they're writing?"
First was a fundraising letter, dated 9-29, that stressed the importance of reaching their goal by the end of the quarter. It reminded readers that "We are coming up on the mid-month mark."
Um... no. I think mid-month is long gone.
Next was an email about a product that I'd ordered. It was letting me know that my package had been shipped - on October 2.

This morning's email reminded me of a common proofreading mistake - one we all need to avoid.
It was a message from someone who teaches and does public speaking for a living. Not famous, but well known in her own circles, and certainly literate. But... if I hadn't recognized her name in the "from" line, I would have assumed the message was junk mail from someone who didn't actually speak English.
The subject line read "Happiness Alluding You?"
Huh? What the heck does that mean? Obviously, she intended to write eluding, not alluding. Perhaps she didn't even write it - maybe … (26 comments)
