writing real estate marketing copy: The Difference in Prospecting a Geographic Territory - 11/22/13 05:28 AM
When you set out to prospect FSBO's or Expireds or potential short sale clients, you have a target audience with a known need to sell. You're looking for a response – soon.
When you begin prospecting a geographic territory, it would be nice if some of those folks were in need of your services immediately, but knowing that most of them don't need you just yet, you have a long term goal. You want to become known as "their" agent – the one they think of any time someone mentions real estate. You definitely want to gain their trust (and possibly … (7 comments)

writing real estate marketing copy: Real Estate Marketing – Are You Selling Time? - 03/01/13 04:44 AM
When marketing your real estate services, do you sell savings or time?
An interesting email I received this morning cited "7 Scientifically Based Copywriting Tips." One of those tips said to be wary of selling "savings" and to instead sell "time."
So I thought about how that applies to your business of selling real estate, and to my business as a copywriter.
You first.
You do sell savings - when you discuss getting the highest price for a listing client or negotiating the lowest price for a buyer. And in my opinion, you do need to sell those savings. … (33 comments)

writing real estate marketing copy: Gifts are free - aren't they? - 12/06/12 01:42 PM
Following up on today's earlier post: Five Persuasive Words to Energize Your Real Estate Marketing Copy, I have to share something else I read.
In copywriting we try to be concise - using the number of words that are needed, and no more. It's one of the most difficult lessons to learn, because we writers tend to fall in love with our words and resist getting rid of any of them.
Once we "get it," we cut and slash - even though it hurts. So of course we try not to be redundant. But according to one marketing guru, … (7 comments)

writing real estate marketing copy: Do You Think You Should Be Able To Write Your Own Marketing Copy? - 12/03/12 08:01 AM

Plenty of people – in real estate and in other businesses – think they should be able to write their own marketing copy.
They feel that since they know their business better than anyone else, they should be able to write about it and promote it better than anyone else.
What they forget is that different people have different talents, and not everyone is a writer. They also forget that marketing copy isn't the same as a personal letter, a book, or even a blog post.  It requires a different approach.
When I first wrote about this … (26 comments)

writing real estate marketing copy: What's the big deal about word choice, anyway? - 09/25/12 04:10 PM

Quite often, when I write a post like this one about "me, myself, and I," someone tells me that I should quit being so picky. The words don't make such a big difference, nor does the spelling, as long as the reader can understand what the writer meant.
And in some cases, writing to some audiences, they're right. If the reader doesn't know the difference between there and their or you're and your they'll "hear" the sounds and understand the words as they were meant. And, if they live in an area where me, myself, and I are routinely mis-used, … (54 comments)

writing real estate marketing copy: A Correction and an Idea... - 08/07/12 08:54 AM
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about community pages - and the fact that on so many real estate sites, they're simply a dry, boring "cut and paste" from Wikipedia.

I said that there's plenty of information on line that can lead to interesting community pages. Since then, I've learned that I was wrong. I had based my assumptions on incomplete evidence.

While what I said is true for most communities I've researched in the southern states, when you get up here in "cold country," the information seems to dwindle. (Why is this? Are we … (6 comments)

writing real estate marketing copy: So What? - 03/24/11 11:28 AM
So what? That's a pretty rude thing to say, so I'm not going to suggest that you say it to anyone but yourself.
It's the question to ask when you're writing a prospecting letter or any kind of promotional copy.
If you write a statement such as: "I have 16 designations, including GRI, ABR, ..." or "I've lived in the X area for 27 years," or "Last year I won the X award for X," then you MUST answer the question "So what?"
Unless you answer the question, the consumers you're trying to impress won't know why they're supposed to be … (8 comments)
