cold weather: Too cold to think!

One of the reasons I moved to the South way back when was to avoid the harsh reality of Winter in Western Pennsylvania. But over the decades since I moved to Georgia, Old Man Winter has occasionally found his way to these supposedly temperate parts! And with single digit temperatures predicted over the next few days, I will be the beneficiary of a free refresher course in frigid activity awareness. It’s a curriculum that I thought I had successfully completed years ago!

cold weather: Getting ready for the big chill!

We are expecting a hard freeze in Newnan Georgia tonight. It’s a bit early for freezing temperatures here in the South. We usually don’t see weather this cold until early December. And so I had to go outside and harvest the last of the Summer vegetables. I’ll pickle the peppers tomorrow and place the last tomatoes on the window sill to ripen. It’s also a good reminder to get my business plan for 2014 in order. With just over two months left before the New Year, the time for preparation is waning quickly.

cold weather: Don’t bemoan Winter’s chill! Cold weather is for snuggling!

So far, the 2010-2011 winter has been a chilly one. There have already been several heavy snows, and plenty of frosty cold temperatures to go around. But there is something about cold weather that drives us to seek warmth by not only turning up the thermostat but also by snuggling up with a loved one by a warm fire with a steaming beverage or a bowl of hot stew. There is something very comforting about looking out at the frigid and bleak winter landscape from within the temperate coverage of a flannel blanket big enough for two.
