education: “There is nothing new under the sun.” Or is there? - 04/25/12 10:11 PM
Whether you attribute the idiom to the Bible or Shakespeare or any other ancient source, the notion of “been there, done that” has been around for a long, long time.
But the real estate business has been in a state of flux the past few years and we as real estate professionals are often taken aback by something that we have never seen or heard before throughout the years of our previous experience.
We learn something new every day, and are often forced to forget it in a very short period of time.
There are few epoch epiphanies. More often than … (8 comments)

education: The “dumbing down” of society. - 03/27/12 11:15 PM
Some might say that my observations are skewed by academic snobbery or a misguided attempt to demonstrate my own generational self-importance.
But I am often astounded by the increasing level of ignorance that I encounter on a day to day basis.
And it is NOT due to a lack of credentialed education. Many are college graduates and yet lack a basic understanding of economics, history, science or even simple arithmetic.
It makes me wonder if readily available technology has eroded the basic concept of learning. Many argue that you don’t need to know anything; you just need to know where to … (23 comments)

education: There is a reason why some people seem to know “EVERYTHING.” - 04/02/11 01:39 AM
Did you ever wonder how some people seem to know “everything” about a topic? I’m not talking about the pretenders that think that they know it all but honest to goodness experts that really do know what they are talking about.
Some will say they these experts are just smart or intelligent, as if they have some special super-power that separates them from ordinary mortal human beings.
And while in actuality these individuals do not possess any paranormal abilities they are indeed “smart,” but not in the way that most think.
They are smart because they know enough to get training … (25 comments)

When I obtained my Georgia real estate license in 1984, the continuing educational requirements were quite simple. A few post-license course and six hours a year were all that was required to maintain a license and sell real estate.
And while the Georgia legal minimum educational requirement to MAINTAIN a license has not changed over the years, the necessity of more continuing education to SELL real estate is more apparent than ever.
The current real estate market is dynamic and in a constant state of flux. In order to successfully sell real estate one must keep up with all of the … (20 comments)

education: They say that experience is the best teacher. If so, I have completed my courses and I am ready to graduate! - 07/22/09 12:43 AM
Yesterday afternoon I showed one of my listings, and just as the potential buyer drove off the sellers returned home. Since they are always anxious to get feedback after a showing, I stayed and chatted with them for a while.
We talked a lot about their house and the real estate market in general, and about what was selling and what was not selling. During the conversation at some point, I uttered this phrase:
"I have been in this business since 1984 and I have NEVER seen anything like this!"
It wasn't until I was in the pickup driving home that … (75 comments)
