georgia: Wait a minute, not another post about snow? What in the world is going on this year? - 03/01/10 11:07 PM
It’s the second day of March, and there is a prediction for significant snowfall in the metro Atlanta area. “Significant” means one inch or more of the white stuff.
There are several considerations here that are noteworthy:
1)      This is Georgia.
2)      It is March.
3)      We have already had three snow storms this year.
But there is one interesting side effect of Mather’s Nature’s madness. In the past the mere mention of the “S” word would send Atlantans into a panic, assaulting grocery stores and stripping milk and bread from the shelves like deranged lunatics.
But now, we have become … (16 comments)

georgia: Thank goodness! Something a little lighter on a cold Thursday in Georgia. - 01/06/10 11:00 PM

I have been under a lot of stress lately. The sleep-depriving, stomach-aching, “why can’t I do something about this” kind of stress that gnaws at you every conscious moment of the day.
I feel the years slipping off of my life as every day seems to pile more anxiety onto an already overloaded bill of laden. It’s getting more arduous every day!
So what could possible lighten up such a dreary environment? One word:
SNOW! They are predicting a snow event for this afternoon and here in middle Georgia, that’s pretty exciting. We are giddy for snow and when it … (36 comments)

georgia: I have just one question for our various state governmental authorities: Where did all of the money go? - 06/02/09 12:51 AM
I wrote a post last night about cutbacks and the potential closing of state parks in Georgia that got me to thinking: Where does all of the money collected by the states go?
In Georgia, we pay both a 6% state income tax and at least a 6% sales tax including local options. (In some areas as high as an 8% sales tax.) That's a pretty high combination of tax levies compared to aggregate levels in other states.
I mean really, when you speak specifically about the state  and the amount of revenue that is collected, verses the amount that is spent, you have to … (55 comments)

georgia: It's April 8 and 26 degrees in Newnan Georgia. We even had snow flurries yesterday in the Sunny South! - 04/07/09 11:55 PM
If there is one piece of advice that I give local horticulture enthusiasts, it is to never plant tender annual flowers or vegetables before "income tax day," April 15.
That's because there is always a minimal chance of frost in early April. When the weather turns warm in March, the desire to get out there and get the garden going is almost overwhelming, and every third year or so, a late frost can wreak havoc on the amateur gardener.
But a hard freeze this late in the year is almost unheard of. It is very destructive to our blooming azaleas and … (28 comments)

georgia: Dixieland Fun Park in Fayetteville Georgia opens the 2009 Season with new rides, new rates, and a new look! - 04/04/09 03:00 PM
Dixieland Fun Park has been a favorite playground for south metro Atlanta area families since 1990! And the park has grown from humble beginnings into a full fledged theme park, with over twenty rides and attractions, and exciting and entertaining shows.
But the big news for the 2009 season is an all new daily use pricing structure. Dixieland has inaugurated a new all day admission fee that allows visitors to enjoy nearly all of the rides an unlimited amount of times during each visit.
Individual ride tickets have become a thing of the past so there is no more rationing or … (8 comments)

georgia: How do you determine when a drought is officially over? That question seems silly but it actually matters! - 03/31/09 11:54 PM
At first the question seems insanely easy: "When is a drought over?" Most people would instinctively say: "when it rains." Apparently, that notion is incorrect.
Here in the Southeast, we have suffered from low rainfall for over two years. And although there have been periods of rainfall, the total amount of rain per year has been significantly below the levels needed to keep the lakes and reservoirs full, and the water table at a dependable level.
So we have been under mandatory water conservation regulations for years. No outside watering and no car washing has been permitted Brown lawns and flowers … (20 comments)

georgia: Voter turnout in Sharpsburg Georgia is extremely heavy. - 11/04/08 05:36 AM
The voter turnout at the A.O. Bridges Community Center in Sharpsburg was extremely heavy in Tuesday's general election! Area voters filled parking lots and grassy area throughout the city and queued up to wait for an opportunity to cast their ballots.
The long wait was mitigated by the glory of a gorgeous fall day, with bright warm sunshine dancing off of the beautifully colored leaves. The crowd was patient and orderly.
Other area voting precincts also reported much higher than average voter turnout. The interest of the electorate in this election is being demonstrated throughout Georgia as well. The polls are … (28 comments)

georgia: Welcome to Newnan Georgia, "The City of Homes" still has a small town aura! - 09/16/08 02:09 PM
If you enjoy Americana at it finest, then Newnan Georgia should be on your short list of places to consider for relocation.
Newnan is the County Seat of Coweta County, Georgia, and it is known as the "City of Homes." During the civil war, General William Tecumseh Sherman did not pass through Newnan, so many of its antebellum homes survive to this day!
Newnan still offers a downtown square that features shopping, restaurants, and lots of antique and crafts marts interspersed between the offices offering every sort of professional services. There is still a county fair each year at the county … (12 comments)

Grantville Georgia, in the southern part of Coweta County, is a picturesque old village setting that has not changed much over the last 50 years. It has period qualities that create the perfect depiction of a cotton mill town in rural Americana.
Here are some images taken in the historic downtown district:

georgia: Greenville Street Park, Newnan, Coweta County Georgia - 08/03/08 09:59 AM

Just south of downtown Newnan is the cities' newest park! Having just opened to the public in the Spring of 2008, Greenville Street Par is fast becoming one of Newnan's most popular urban destinations.
And no wonder. It's an easy walk from the square, or there is plenty of parking along Greenville Street. The park is designed to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs.
The highlight of the park is the open air amphitheatre that doubles as a grassy play surface. There is a small fountain that uses only recycled water in the middle of a large outdoor eating area with plenty … (7 comments)

georgia: Atlanta Georgia, information about the economic center of the South! - 07/19/08 12:05 PM
Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, and at a population of over five million in the metropolitan area, it is by far the largest city in the state. Atlanta has always enjoyed a robust economy, thanks to mild weather and exceptional amenities.
Atlanta is serviced by an excellent road system, highlighted by Interstates I-75, I -85, and I-20, which all intersect in the city. The city also has a rapid rail system, MARTA, that moves commuters at high speed from points as far south as the airport to points North, East and West of the city.
And speaking of the Hartsfield-Jackson … (9 comments)

georgia: Helen Georgia, an Alpine vacation destination in the North Georgia Mountains! - 07/17/08 11:19 PM
One of North Georgia's most popular tourist destinations is the Alpine Village of Helen.  Although the Bavarian façade of the town is relatively new, the history of the area is long and diverse.
The ancient Mississippians who inhabited these lands gave way to the Cherokee Nation, who settled these rich valleys in the sixteenth century. There are still burial mounds visible in the region.  However, European settlers desired the fertile farmlands of the mountain valleys and eventually removed the Cherokees. The local economy became one of agriculture and timber harvesting.
As the timber was depleted, landowners in the Nacoochee Valley area … (12 comments)

georgia: Kitten Update ... Little Peyton is doing just fine! Visit the Coweta County Animal Shelter today! - 07/15/08 12:32 AM
Last week I reported that we had adopted a little kitten at the Coweta County Animal Shelter. A life saved ... Just in the nick of time! I am happy to tell you that little Peyton is doing just fine after a trip to the vet and a little medical treatment.
While it is impossible to save every animal from euthanasia, it is important to understand what the animal control officers deal with on a daily basis. It's not just animals that are lost, unruly or mistreated. It is also animals that just happened to be born because a pet owner … (20 comments)

georgia: Gardening green ... it's more than not using pesticide! - 07/12/08 02:33 PM
When planning a landscape design for your home, selecting the proper plant material from the very beginning can save a lot of aggravation and resources down the road. Most gardening issues arise from initially having the wrong plants for a given climate, and not from pests.
First of all, use species of indigenous plants when possible. Indigenous plants have already adapted to the conditions in your eco-zone, and generally require very little in the way of chemical fertilizers or pest control.
While some exotics seem desirable, it can be a constant struggle for the gardener to ensure survival. Exotics may require … (15 comments)

georgia: Old Town Sharpsburg Georgia! - 07/05/08 03:22 PM
Nestled in the middle of Atlanta's suburban sprawl, Old Town Sharpsburg Georgia has an interesting collection of historic buildings that allow us to imagine what the town must have looked like in times past.
During the heyday of cotton, Sharpsburg was an important center for farmers who wanted to get their crops to market. In the 19th century, Sharpsburg had merchants and all sorts of service businesses.
More importantly, in 1870, the Savannah, Griffin & North Alabama Railroad was completed and more importantantly, constructed a depot in Sharpsburg. This brought everything the farmers needed in the form of merchandise and implements, as well … (7 comments)

The city provides excellent crowd and traffic control, and many residents use eco-friendly electric golf carts to get to a vantage point for the show. It is a holiday ritual that has been ongoing for many years.
The 2008 fireworks did not disappoint the throng of onlookers. Many of whom had staked out their spot hours before showtime. As … (7 comments)
