happy new year: New Years and Time Zones!

I had a friend from New Zealand wish me a Happy New Year this morning. After all, it was already 2013 across the International Date Line! Here in the Eastern Time Zone, our first glimpse of the New Year coincides with the celebration at Times Square New York, and so we were raised on dropping spheres and the strains of Guy Lombardo conducting Auld Lang Syne!
