new year: Goodbye to both year and career! - 12/31/15 09:47 AM
As the last few hours of 2015 wind down I look back on not only the year that was, but also on my career in real estate.
For many reasons I had to retire from work and to move on to my next adventure in life. I will no longer actively participate in real estate brokerage.
Instead I'll spend my time doing all of the things that working in real estate kept me from doing. Since I am no longer working, for the first time in my life I will TRULY be my own boss. I can finally determine my own schedule and do … (46 comments)

new year: Days of Auld Lang Syne - 12/31/13 08:58 AM
As the final minutes of 2013 trickle through the neck of the hourglass, it is good to pause to stop and take a look back.
Life is a lot like a hike up a steep mountain. The further along you get on the journey, the more there is to see when you turn around.
With every step, the starting point becomes more distant and harder to discern as it fades farther and farther into the horizon.
But looking forward the path is clear! And although there are many more miles behind me than lie ahead, the road is clear and visibility … (9 comments)

new year: Starting the New Year Off with a bang! - 01/01/11 01:21 AM
2011 is finally here, and as we recover from the revelry of the celebrations, it’s time to sober up and get back to work!
I have always felt that the first two weeks of January set the tone for the rest of the year. With the holidays behind us and as the “ordinariness” of the dark days of winter descend upon us, there is nothing to distract us from getting our businesses moving full speed ahead.
After enduring several years of extreme challenges in the real estate market, the prospect of what lies ahead is far lass daunting. Those of us … (19 comments)

new year: “Fast away the old year passes!” - 12/26/10 03:02 AM

Now the Christmas has come and gone, it’s time for the next “big” holiday, which is coincidentally the last celebration of 2010 and also the first “red letter day” of 2011.
A new year is more than just a number. Every January 1 we have the opportunity for a fresh start. And it’s important to get out of the starting box running.
It doesn’t matter if 2010 was your best year ever, or your worst year, or somewhere in between. On next Saturday, it will be history.
I don’t think that anyone ever expects a New Year to be a … (14 comments)

new year: A New Year, a new company, and a new attitude. Why this year’s resolutions might be the most important ones in a long time! - 12/31/09 11:07 PM

A few weeks ago, our brokerage firm merged with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers. The transition has been phenomenal so far, with only minor glitches which are more than offset by a company-wide dedication to professionalism.
And while each New Year always entails some degree of adaptation and modification, this year the adjustments will be much more dramatic. Because of the new branding, every marketing device that we possess must be reviewed and updated!
This mandatory accountability has made me do the things that I should have been doing anyway – making certain that my tools are … (36 comments)

new year: Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? - 12/31/09 11:01 AM
Bobby Burns penned these words over two hundred years ago, and they are as poignant today as they were back in Scotland in 1788. When the clock strikes midnight tonight and the band strikes up the classic poem set to music, there will not be a dry eye to be found.
Because with each passing year, we have all lost a few more family members and dear ones, and the joy of starting afresh is dampened by the bittersweet memories of the past.
It’s a classic dichotomy of mixed emotions, often mollified with sweet kisses and embraces.
But there is a … (15 comments)

new year: Happy New Year to everyone ...here are some interesting points to ponder about the end of 2008! - 12/30/08 10:49 PM
Well, well, well. Another new year is just around the corner. Having been through 55 of these momentous events, I can say with some degree of certainty, that this one will be greeted with little fanfare or celebration.
After all, there is not a lot of reason to jump up and down with glee. The new year carries with it quite a bit of baggage that must be reckoned with.
1) Another tax year is over, and returns and taxes are due. The months of accounting and reconciling become a shadow hanging over every aspect of ordinary life until the blessed … (38 comments)
