winter: And Fall defers to Winter’s reign! - 11/17/13 09:57 AM
On muted crimson frosted peaks
‘Neath tousled wind blown umber sheets,
‘Tis time for rest as dusk now wanes,
And Fall defers to Winter’s reign!
              (Richard Weisser 2013)
It's that time of year again!
As the last vestiges of Fall yield to the approaching Winter there is a certain unmistakable physiological metamorphosis that goes along with the change of the seasons.
It’s natural to want to slow down at this time of year. Thousands of years of agrarian programming in ingrained into our DNA and it seems a little harder to get out of bed in the morning.

winter: There’s a Cold North Wind Blowing into Newnan Georgia! - 11/12/13 12:04 PM
The Calendar may say that it’s early November, but the thermometer looks more like it should be early January.
With temperatures falling into the low 20’s tonight, Newnan GA will be about ten degrees colder than Juneau Alaska.
It’s also a “chilling” reminder that the days of 2013 are dwindling, and that the holiday season is just around the corner and that 2014 is not far behind.
The clock always seems to accelerate from mid-November through New Years Day, and I’m looking forward to the frenzy of festivities that are about to descend upon us.
But for now, I just want … (10 comments)

winter: Getting ready for the big chill! - 10/25/13 11:26 AM
We are expecting a hard freeze in Newnan Georgia tonight.
It’s a bit early for freezing temperatures here in the South. We usually don’t see weather this cold until early December.
And so I had to go outside and harvest the last of the Summer vegetables. I’ll pickle the peppers tomorrow and place the last tomatoes on the window sill to ripen.
It’s also a good reminder to get my business plan for 2014 in order. With just over two months left before the New Year, the time for preparation is waning quickly.

And since I’ll be spending less time … (14 comments)

winter: When you don’t have a real Winter this year, you have to look back! - 01/29/12 01:21 AM
The woodpile and the furnace grateAwait the tardy guest waylaid. Is Winter past or only late…Asleep, to stir another day?              (R Weisser 2012)
It seems as if we haven’t has any Winter at all this year here in Newnan Georgia.
As a matter of fact, even though it’s still January, the yellow bells and jonquils are already blooming.
And although we enjoy a relatively mild climate here in the Southeast, we do occasionally get a real taste of Winter, as these photographs from previous years will attest!
Here's wishing you snow if you want it, and … (17 comments)

winter: What happened to winter? We are still waiting for its appearance. - 01/02/12 01:24 AM
So far this year, winter has not made much of an appearance. Although there was a freak early snowstorm in the Northeast here in Georgia Winter has not amounted to much more than a few frosty mornings.
Here is it, the second day of January, and I still have a few peppers than can be harvested from a still alive (although not exactly vigorous) pepper plant.
I guess from a purely economic perspective, a mild winter in a real boon as we save on heating fuel and the cost of snow removal.
But from an aesthetic point of view, it somehow … (20 comments)

winter: Furnace on? Check. Ready for Winter? Are you kidding? - 10/21/11 01:57 AM
As the first chill of the season stealthily descended into Newnan Georgia last night, I turned on the furnace for the first time this year.
It served as an unpleasant reminder that the cold, dark days of Winter are just around the corner. And although I can’t do anything about it, it is a bit depressing to say the least.
One of the reasons that I moved to Georgia so many years ago was to escape the frigid Winters of Western Pennsylvania. By contrast,Georgia enjoys a relatively temperate climate.
But with each passing year of living in the South, it FEELS … (17 comments)

winter: Don’t bemoan Winter’s chill! Cold weather is for snuggling! - 01/25/11 04:51 AM
So far, the 2010-2011 winter has been a chilly one. There have already been several heavy snows, and plenty of frosty cold temperatures to go around.
But there is something about cold weather that drives us to seek warmth by not only turning up the thermostat but also by snuggling up with a loved one by a warm fire with a steaming beverage or a bowl of hot stew.
There is something very comforting about looking out at the frigid and bleak winter landscape from within the temperate coverage of a flannel blanket big enough for two.
I love cold weather! … (16 comments)

winter: The big thaw … at last! - 01/15/11 10:38 AM
To say that it has been cold in the Atlanta Metro area for the last week in an understatement. The snow and ice that accumulated last Sunday night persisted all week as air temperatures barely reached the freezing mark.
Finally today it warmed up enough to clear up most of the remaining ice on the roadways, which in some cases was several inches thick.
As regional municipalities debate over what more could have been done to have averted the disaster, the fact remains that we are not equipped to deal with widespread icing and we will probably not change much in … (7 comments)

winter: Getting into the holiday spirit is easier when it’s freezing! - 12/05/10 12:35 PM
Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, the holiday season was frequently punctuated with snow and always accompanied by cold weather. Here in Newnan Georgia, our winter weather hinges on the wind. When the wind blows from the cold Canadian North, we have typical winter weather. If it blows from the South, we have warm breezes from the Gulf of Mexico Should the two collide, we have a blizzard! Tonight, it is just very cold, which seems to make the holiday lights burn a little brighter. After a nice bone-chilling walk around the neighborhood, it’s nice to retire to the family room with … (7 comments)

winter: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great place to visit during the winter but please be aware of seasonal road closures. - 01/01/10 10:49 AM

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great place to visit during any season of the year, but winter offers special opportunities not available during the other three seasons.
Due to the fact that the leaves are off of the trees, views are enhanced from nearly every vantage point, and on a clear day in winter you can see an exceptionally long way!
However, if you plan to visit the park in the winter, please be aware that many of the secondary roads are closed during cold weather.
The roads that are seasonally closed include Clingman’s Dome Road, Heintooga … (16 comments)

winter: The "Dark Days of Winter" are upon us! And I don't like it one bit. - 01/03/09 01:27 PM
It's the time of year when the Christmas lights come down and the streets in the neighborhood become dark again.
The realization that cold, wet, dreary winter is upon us without the mitigation of festive lighting can be very disconcerting.
The decay cycle from electric nirvana to pitch black and darkness can deter even the most optimistic soul from experiencing thoughts of gaiety or exuberance. Instead, it casts an ethereal gloom that compels us to remain indoors to seek refuge from the darkness.
So as we bathe in the glow of plasma and liquid crystal displays, we begin to count the … (35 comments)

winter: Now is the FUN part of winter! So let's all get busy before it's too late. - 11/25/08 10:23 PM
When tempests swirl above the crownAnd heaven's dust conceals the tone. The siren's blasts though fissures slinkTo permeate through crack and chink.                    (R Weisser)
In most parts of the country, winter has already arrived. There is a bit of excitement associated with the first cold waves of the season. A lot of locales have even experienced early snows and they gear up for full holiday mode.
This is the exciting part of winter. It's the season of "Over the River and Through the Woods" and holiday decorating, and the partaking of sumptuous food with family and friends. It is both energizing and invigorating, … (30 comments)

winter: There's a chill in the air, and it's time for nature to run it's course. - 11/15/08 10:52 PM
A cold front is charging through Newnan Georgia. Overnight temperatures are predicted to be in the mid-twenties, and that means one thing:
Winter is here. I will bid adieu to my fresh peppers and basil, my beautiful flowers will turn brown and die, and the brightly colored leaves that are remaining will become brittle and drop to the earth.
I know that it's part of the natural order of things, and it is mid-November after all. These are the days that I longed for during the oppressive heat of our southern summer, but now that winter is imminent, there is always … (51 comments)

winter: Waxing poetic as autumn’s display wanes…all good things must end! - 10/30/08 01:14 AM
Oh bliss, to see cold hills in flames,Chilled to the bone amidst the blaze,‘Ere Autumnal winds consume the fuel.Fierce fires that burn for too few days.                                    (R Weisser)
Fall is waning quickly. I love everything about autumn except one thing ... the show is over way too quickly. There can never be a "wait until tomorrow" attitude when one is taking photographs of nature's most awesome display.
I always experience melancholy as November approaches. To go from the heights of visual autumnal Nirvana to the depths of winter's despair. It's a lingering depression that is interrupted only by the holidays. … (38 comments)
