alexandria: Five Reasons to Love Lake Carlos (Alexandria, MN) - 01/20/08 02:09 AM
Alexandria has many, many beautiful lakes. In fact, from most places of employment, you can walk out the door and be at a lake within 5 minutes (while Alexandria is a popular, bustling community, traffic isn't a factor in Alexandria). It is tough to choose one as a favorite, but if forced to do so, I'd choose Lake Carlos. Here are 5 reasons I like it. 1. County Road 11. Each time I turn onto it off Carlos Darling Drive, I immediately relax. 2. Three Havens Grocery. It is kitschy and is convenient for a newspaper and cup of coffee or … (0 comments)

alexandria: This weekend in Alexandria - 07/27/07 03:54 AM
It will be a  busy weekend in the Lakes Area. If you aren't going to be at Waterama, be sure to stop by Art in the Park on Saturday and Sunday. Held for 31 years at City Park on the shores of Lake Henry, there is arts and crafts but also has live music, food vendors and more. If you aren't going to it, avoid this part of CR-42 like the plague as traffic is very slow (for Alexandria anyway). Shuttles are offered from Runestone Community Center. This is advisable. You park and hop on an air-conditioned shuttle that drops you … (0 comments)

alexandria: 100,000 Walleye Fingerlings - 07/10/07 08:18 AM
A joint effort between the DNR and the Viking Sportsmen will help increase the walleye population in the Chain of Lakes. In the fall, the DNR will put approximately 2,5000 pounds of walleye fingerlings into the lakes and this will be matched by the Viking Sportsmen.
Fingerlings are one to six months old and can range from a size of one to twelve inches depending on the species. Walleye fingerlings range from three to eight inches each fall. With roughly 20 fingerlings to a pound, there will be roughly 100,000 fingerlings added.

alexandria: Minnesota, Land of Sky-Tinted Waters - 06/27/07 04:44 AM
From the August 30th, 1878 edition of the Alexandria Post:Minnesota, the famed land of "sky-tinted waters," has no other equal area embracing so many attractions to health and pleasure seekers, tourists and sportsmen, as well as permanent residents as are found in Douglas County. The time has now fully come when these advantages, unsurpassed beauties, should be made known to the world. Next summer will witness the coming of hundreds - even thousands - of visitors to spend a few days or weeks or an entire season among this wealth of loveliness. Business men and men of means need look after … (0 comments)

alexandria: A Plane Ride Over the Lakes of Alexandria - 06/13/07 01:09 PM
This afternoon, Al from Alexandria Aviation and I were racing the incoming rain as we headed out from Chandler Field in a Cessna to Ida and Le Homme Dieu so I could take some aerials of properties for sale.
Click the thumbnail at the left for a bird's eye view of a lot for sale on the east side of Lake Ida. The list price is $315,000 and the lot is ready for a home to be connected to city sewer and a private well.

alexandria: Drive Time - 05/01/07 04:30 PM
Earlier today, I was in my Volvo heading south towards Maple Lake. Along with me was a couple from a metro area that will soon be moving to Alexanria permanently.
As we crossed over I-94, they asked about the drive time to Maple Lake. After answering their question (around 5 minutes), they then asked about the drive time in the morning.
Life is good in Alexandria. The drive time is the same any time of the day.

alexandria: The Ice is Gone - 04/24/07 02:15 AM
There isn't any ice visible on the lakes now. Sunday's rain drowned out the last of it. And with it, the number of buyers looking at lake properties has had a marked increase. It always amazes me.
The best time to be looking is the dead of winter. If you know the lakes and/or are working with a Realtor that has the knowledge, you are going to find the best buys. There is less competition for you (fewer buyers) because of the fear of the unknown. If they can't see the lake's bottom, most people won't buy what they can't see. And … (0 comments)

alexandria: Alexandria's Lake Geneva - 04/22/07 12:06 AM
Lake Geneva is part of The Chain of Lakes in Alexandria but one knock against it is accessibility. Depending on the level of the water and/or the size of your boat, you might be limited to Lake Geneva. One summer I was able to pass from Le Homme Dieu to Geneva in my family's deckboat. Three summers ago, I was on a Sea Doo and had to lay flat on the seat to pass through. All this aside, I have never talked to a Lake Geneva owner that doesn't love their lake.

alexandria: The Birth Place of America - 04/18/07 12:15 AM
The Kensington Runestone and the enduring mystery of it's origin continue to be the hallmark of Alexandria's Runestone Museum which has been home to the Kensington Runestone since 1958. This is recent history when compared to the span of the Runestone's life. It was discovered in 1898 clutched in the roots of the aspen tree on the Olaf Ohman farm near Kensington (15 miles west of Alexandria). The Kensington Runestone has led researchers from around the world and across the centuries on an exhaustive quest to explain how a runic artifact, dated 1362, could show up in North America.

alexandria: Tree City USA - 04/11/07 12:16 AM
Alexandria has once again been designated a Tree City USA city. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
To qualify for Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards established by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters.
These standards were established to ensure that every qualifying community would have a viable tree management plan and program.
A Tree Board or Department
A Tree Care Ordinance
A Community Forestry Program With an Annual Budget of at … (0 comments)

alexandria: Alexandria's Beginnings - 04/08/07 04:52 AM
In 1858, a 20 X 30 mile area of land and water was given the name Douglas County. Five men are known to have settled in Douglas County in 1858. Three of the men, named Holmes, Grant, and Sanford, settled in what became known as Homes City on Grant Lake. Two brothers, Alexander and William Kinkead claimed land along Lake Agnes and Lake Winona. The site was selected for its natural beauty, abundance of water, and timber. It was in 1858 that a company was formed that established the first business; the new company was set up to advertise and sell … (0 comments)
