If you have joined Google+, you'll know what circles are. It is a way to group your friends-family-associates into groups. When you post something, you can share with the world ("public") or you can limit who you share with by applying only to a circle. Inversely, if it feels like you have subscribed to SO MANY people and you look at your main feed, it is like drinking water out of a fire hose, then circles are also great.
