google: Google Street View Timeline - 01/07/22 02:35 PM
Google Maps is an amazing tool. Besides the regular map, there are other modes you can enter such as Google Earth and Google Street view. In street view, you can look around in 360 degrees as if you were actually there. There's a pretty good chance you have discovered street view already. But in today's blog, I wanted to share the timeline option, which you may not be aware of!
Street view has all kinds of usefulness. You might be travelling to a new location and want to see it virtually first to become more familiar. Or, you may be taking a … (37 comments)

google: Are You Using GOOGLE PHOTOS? - 09/21/16 08:43 PM
Photography is part of modern daily life now. Think about it. You carry a camera (in the shape of a mobile phone) with you at all times in your pocket (or purse). How many photos did you take today? how many this week? this month? this year?
One of my all time favorite tech tools relates to working with photos (if you know me and tech, giving such an accolade should make you be more than a little curious!). That tool is Google Photos.
I'm going to introduce you to this tool and highly recommend to you that you check it out. And if … (97 comments)

google: How to Find a Specific Blog Post Written a While Ago - 08/23/14 07:09 AM
I could have also titled this post “You spent HOW MUCH time looking for that *#*??!$ post?” :)
Blogging over time means that you have a vast catalog of posts under your hat that you can grab out and share with people when they ask you a question. You’ve answered it before in a blog post. Aha! Go get that post and share it with them.
So where do you start looking. Your stats page? Your archives page? (*cough, cough* Dear AR Devs: archives is broken right now  *cough, cough*)
If the post is back in time a ways and you’ve been around a while that’s a daunting … (58 comments)

google: Your Music on the Cloud - Google Music - 11/17/13 05:38 AM
The technologies related to our personal enjoyment of music have dramatically changed over the past century! Imagine how huge a change it was that you could RECORD a live performance and play it back whenever you wanted. Persons who would never have heard the original performance could now hear it. From the early days there was a gramophone and soon after came the golden age of radio. The progression to the vinyl record allowed about 20 minutes per each side of the disc in the LP long playing 33 1/3 RPM mode! The 8-track tape allowed a more portable format as you could take these along in your automobile. The more compact cassette tapewas … (33 comments)

google: Does Google Count You as an Established Author? - 03/11/13 01:09 AM
Have you noticed the Google search results pages sometimes has the photo of the person alongside the link. When a person searching for information has a whole page of possibilities to choose from - which one will they choose? Most likely they will pick the topmost result. HOWEVER if one of the lower results grabs your eye based on the difference of an author's photo and stats - the latter item may be the one that actually gets the clickthrough. Do you see the advantage here? Are you leveraging it on your blog posts? You need to be. Let's talk about … (77 comments)

I know that many of you have a Gmail account. I do too! There are lots of great reasons to use Chrome as your choice of browsers, but there are some great specific reasons related to Gmail running in Chrome to also consider.
First of all, you can run any of your favorite websites as if it were a standalone desktop app. You can see my taskbar on the right. The gmail website is running in special app mode and it even gets its own icon.
Email is important to me so it is running on my desktop all day … (31 comments)

Social media wars are on! You've likely seen the news but here's a quick recap of a great new feature we now have available to us: Video Calls. Today Facebook made their self-titled "awesome news" announcement that the big part of which was the Facebook + Skype partnership. You can now very easily one-on-one video call any of your friends who are also in Facebook. The sell, after a very quick installation step you are ready to go. (i.e. you don't need any more to go to skype and sign up for a user account, download and install... so the new … (53 comments)

google: Google Flight Information - 06/14/11 09:50 AM
Google tells us everything else, why not flight information too! Recently Google added the capability to tell us all of the available flights between two cities. Lets take Seattle and Newark NJ (my home airport). If I use the keyword flights and then the two airport codes SEA and EWR, or a search specically like this
flights SEA to EWR
notice the results below (note: you have to click the + button to expand the results)

I like this new feature to see what your flight options are going to be. Whether or not they are booked, you have to … (46 comments)

google: Where IS that Blog Post! I Know I Wrote It!!! - 06/02/11 06:52 AM
I have a feeling you have been there... "I know I wrote that article! Now where is it!!! I want to share it with somebody!" You can go back through your archives listing (it's over there on the right-hand sidebar... every post you have on AR sorted by MONTH). But that takes Wayyyy to long! After a couple of months of listings, you give up on that one. But wait, I can search my tags! Uhhh, well the first 479 posts on ActiveRain you had no clue how to properly tag an article, so that's not going to work (on the … (72 comments)

google: Using Google Bookmarks [Tutorial Video] - 05/26/11 06:59 AM

There is an ENORMOUS amount of information that is put in front of us each day on the web. Google Bookmarks is what I am featuring today to help you find "that article" again when you have more time to read through it. Perhaps it is an article that has great info and you know there will be opportunities to share with somebody else later. Put it into your bookmarks list and you will be able to find it!
What makes google bookmarks successful is that it allows you to tag your favorites with "labels" (or in other words, keywords). When you tag a post, think … (62 comments)

google: Customizing and Embedding Google Maps - 05/12/11 11:11 AM
Google Maps is my most often “go-to” mapping site. Including a map image on your web page or blog post is a great visual element to supplement your hyper-local content. Instead of posting a snapshot of the map, why not embed the map as an object. As such, your readers can dynamically pan and zoom to get more understanding. Furthermore, if you embed an actual map object, consider also that Google surely associates your map’s geo-location as evidence of your local page content.
What if you wanted to highlight multiple locations in your blog post? Let’s say you wanted to … (116 comments)

google: iGoogle - Dashboard to Your Digital Life - 04/20/11 06:58 AM
I recently wrote a post outlining 21 Google Tools that most of us love to use. I will write follow-up articles detailing and highlighting these tools in more detail. Today, I want to highlight the iGoogle web page. Think of it as a dashboard to your digital life!
In the screenshot below you will see my main page on iGoogle. This web page is entirely customized according to your needs. You define the "gadgets" that you want to see and then you arrange them into three columns on your page. If you have too many gadgets for one page, then you … (31 comments)

google: Google Is Great! Should We Count the Ways? - 04/15/11 11:46 AM
Today on Facebook, we had great participation in a little "Friday Quiz" that I held. Google is AMAZING. The different tools in addition to SEARCH are numerous. I had quickly scratched out a count of 20 in a quick tally in my notes. Our quiz revealed 21 items plus several bonus items. What is remarkable is that these tools are FREE too! Here is the results of our Facebook Friday Online QUIZ - you will see who came to class today!

google: Now Where Was That Article Again? Google Bookmarks! - 04/14/11 11:26 AM
The amount of information that inundates us on a daily basis is overwhelming! How many times do you come across something online that you know has GREAT value but, at the moment, you don't have time to follow through on it. So what do you do then? What I do is click my all-important "save for later" big red button! You know the big red button Staples has, "that was easy!" Here's the thing about "save for later"... it may be EASY to click the bookmark option, but if you've been online for more than a week, your list of saved … (48 comments)

google: Benefits of Chrome Browser - Form Text [Series - Part 4] - 09/30/10 01:58 AM
The Google Chrome browser has been MY browser of choice for quite a while now. This series of articles is to highlight many of the reasons why it is such an excellent browser. I have tagged these articles so you can see all of them listed and go back to the ones that you have missed with this link Google Chrome Browser - Series
We use forms quite a bit on web sites. The new ActiveRain contact form is an example. Sometimes on a form there is not just a text box but a text AREA, or in other words … (13 comments)

google: Google - Beyond the Obvious - 09/05/10 02:24 PM
Google is often synonymous with "searching the web" - in other words someone tells you "did you google it?" Alright, everybody knows google for searching but what you might not know is that it has some really great additional features for finding quick answers.
For example, did you know that it was a calculator AND that it can do units conversion. Consider this, you have a 60' x 120' property and want to know the acreage. Notice what you can type in below:

Now what if you are travelling to visit a different city. Let's say Seattle. Let's find out … (12 comments)

google: Why I Like the Chrome Browser [Series - Part 2] - 08/29/10 02:40 AM

Of the total time that you on your computer in a day, a good portion of that is spent online... perhaps a major portion, right? Selecting a browser then is an important choice. If you are a windows user, you start off with Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) until you discover (or get shown) that this is not your only choice. This is Part 2 of an ongoing blog series for me to highlight points about MY browser of choice - Google Chrome. If you missed it you can see [Part 1] by clicking that link.

google: Why I Like the Chrome Browser [Series - Part 1] - 08/28/10 05:11 AM

Which browser are you using right this very minute?
Ask yourself: Of the time that I spend on my computer, how much of that time is on the internet? When you answer, you'll realize that choosing a browser should be an important decision!
If you have a Windows computer, you by default start off with Microsoft Internet Explorer. This is an "ok" choice, but you can choose so much better. This article series will tell you why I have switched and why my personal choice in the browser war is Google Chrome.
For starters, Chrome is downright fast. Starts up … (15 comments)
