appraisal: Have you Hugged Your Boss Today, this Friday is National Hug Your Boss Day - 08/20/13 02:28 PM
Have you Hugged Your Boss Today, this Friday is National Hug Your Boss Day.

As an Employee;
I am a big hugger, but when I was an employee nearly a quarter of a century ago, I don't remember ever hugging my boss.
But since that time my Boss is someone that I refer to as a Client, and yes I have hugged a few of these, not often but every once in a while you do run into a hugger.
It's always a surprise, but it does feel nice to have a client who cares or appreciates … (9 comments)

The Red Cedar State Trail
This trail is the third trail and final trail that I will be talking about this week belonging to the Chippewa Valley Trail System.
You will encounter some superior scenery as this 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail.
This trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area.
Summer time activities include Hiking and Bicycling,
In the fall hunting is allowed along parts of the trail, and ample game can … (6 comments)

appraisal: The Old Abe State Trail is one of my favorites - 08/18/13 04:44 PM
The Old Abe State Trail is one of my favorites
The Old Abe State Trail is one of my favorites in Wisconsin, for many reasons.
The first reason is that it is very close to our Cadott office of Woodland Management Service.
The second reason is the many spectacular views along the Chippewa River as you travel between two state parks in Chippewa County Wisconsin.
It is a conduit between the Chippewa River Trails system and the large Ice Age Trail that travels from the Southeast corner of Wisconsin to The Northwest Corner of the State.
This trail is named after … (7 comments)

appraisal: Timber cruising near Ironwood Michigan - 08/18/13 04:44 PM
Timber cruising near Ironwood Michigan

I always enjoy working in this area of Wisconsin along the Michigan border, the timber is great, the wildlife is plentiful, and the scenery is exceptional.
Here is a photo of one of our young Foresters with his DME, compass, and other gear cruising a stand of high quality Sugar Maple in Northern Wisconsin.
If you know of anyone looking for an exception crew of Foresters to inventory, appraise or manage a forest....  Remember, When only the Best will do, count on the WMS crew.

Chippewa River State Trail, great scenery, great exercise, and lots of family fun.
Looking for something fun to do in the Chippewa Valley?  Check out the great trails in this part of the State.
We have three fantastic trails that offer great scenery, great exercise, and lots of family fun.
The first of these connecting trails will take you from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Durand Wisconsin and covers 30 miles of Wisconsin history as it winds along the Chippewa River following an old railroad grade known as the Milwaukee Road.
This is the central portion of the Chippewa Valley Trails System; … (10 comments)

appraisal: The Perfect Day on a Wisconsin Lake - 08/14/13 03:35 PM
The Perfect Day on a Wisconsin Lake Minnesota boasts of their 10,000 lakes in the motto on their license plates, but many of us Wisconsinites suspect that we may have more and better lakes.
I grew up near the town of Luck, Wisconsin, a town which is proud to have over 30 premium lakes within 10 miles.
Two of those premium lakes bordered on our 860 acre dairy farm.
During my youth I became very familiar with these two lakes.
One of which was a highly used recreational lake, with tons of swimmers, boaters, and lots of … (9 comments)

appraisal: DoomDay Preppers, Should We be Afraid? - 08/13/13 04:42 PM
DoomsDay Preppers, Should We be Afraid?
I grew up in rural America where we are fairly self-sufficient and most people have a "can do" attitude and they are not too worried about anything that they cannot handle.
We are able to fix most machines, create our own tools and survive any hardship.
Certainly not too worried about not being able to find food, water or shelter.
We like to continue to learn better techniques to make living in nature a little better.  So when Doomsday Preppers came on last year I thought it would be fun and I thought that … (13 comments)

Perseid Meteor Shower Coming to a Sky Near You Next Week Perseid meteor shower
Here is a repeat of my blog from last summer, I hope that you will take a little time this summer to enjoy some falling starts with me.

Perseid meteor shower

It’s been a long busy and stressful July so far, and Wednesday night or should I say Thursday morning as I crawled out of my truck at the Cadott office beat and stressed, I was treated to a  Falling Star.

It brought a smile to my face, remembering all the times … (16 comments)

appraisal: Logging Sleigh at the Rhinelander Museum - 07/28/13 04:41 PM
Logging Sleigh at the Rhinelander Museum

At first glance a steam powered logging sleigh looks like a train going through the woods, until you notice that there are no wheels involved, and no tracks, just grooves in the ice.

Preparing for these large log haulers did involve more than a simple logging trail, it had to be rather straight and level, and in our travels at Woodland Management Service we often come across these old trails hidden in the forest, still in good shape except where they cross rivers, or where the trees … (17 comments)

appraisal: The Blacksmith Shop, an Essential of any Early Logging Camp - 07/27/13 04:02 PM
Rhinelander Museum, The Blacksmith Shop, an Essential of any Early Logging Camp

Today we have the next segment in our Rhinelander Museum series.
The blacksmith shop was an essential component of any logging camp, with tools to be made and tools to be repaired.  Without these essential tools the trees couldn not be cut, the sleds could not be made and repaired and the horses could not be shod.

Civilian Conservation Corps at the Rhinelander Museum

One of the highlights of my grandfather’s early life was when he could stop hauling illegal beverages and go to work in a Civilian Conservation Corps CCC camp.

Not only was it a great opportunity to meet other young people who he would not have met deep in the northwoods, but he also learned many useful skills including surveying, tree planting, road construction, bridge construction, and more.

Stack of Maps, even in the digital age

I always enjoy a project with Stacks and stacks of maps, it generally means a very busy large project that will yield great results for both us and our clients.   These days many of these maps are being replaced by GIS maps that we load into our data recorders, but it is still nice to have the paper maps as well.
If you have an inventory project out there in need of a crew of very good Foresters, give us a call.

It is sure to be a great experience for all with new knowledge and contacts to bring back and utilize while improving the forests of our clients.

appraisal: Rhinelander Logging Museum - 07/19/13 06:28 AM
Rhinelander Logging Museum

Most of the early logging was done during the winter for many reasons.  Transportation was the main reason, getting these logs to the river highways was significantly easier to do over frozen ground, and getting the logs down the rivers was much easier during the spring flooding season.

Logging in the winter also allowed the loggers to spend the summers scratching out farms from the dense forest which would hopefully allow their familys to eat while they spend the winter in logging camp.

Although the forests were mostly … (6 comments)

Progress on the New Offices of Woodland Management Service at 2933 Church St, Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Even though our crew is split between the Cadott office and the Stevens Point office this month, great progress is being made on the new office in Stevens Point.
The plumbing issues are nearly finished, the painting is about half complete and the new entrance is at about 50 percent.

Closing Today on Woodland Management Service's new office at 2933 Church St, Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Woodland Management will be moving to a much busier street in a few weeks.
The Sellers asked us to move up the closing a few days earlier than scheduled, but with our excellent banker we had no problem getting it done quickly.

appraisal: Appraisal of Trees after Road Side Construction Damage - 07/06/13 05:39 PM
Appraisal of Trees after Road Side Construction Damage
Sometimes road builders make mistakes too.
Often a homeowner will call us after an over ambitious road crew worker cuts or damages a tree on their property and they are generally surprised to find out how much that tree is worth.
If you or a friend find yourself in such a situation, get ahold of a forester with experience in appraising trees for aesthetic value to set things right in your yard.
