FAQ How do you Measure and Appraise these Large Forests so Quickly? The quick answer is Statistics. The Foresters at Woodland Management Service do Appraise forests of all sizes ranging from individual urban trees to large tracts as large as a half million acres. Considering that it takes a day to measure and appraise a group of trees in a yard you would think that it would take weeks to measure a forty, or decades to measure a large half million acre tract. Luckily for our clients, as the properties get larger, our samples get smaller. On very small properties where (13 comments)

FAQ Is a Timber Appraisal Necessary when Buying and Selling Forestland? It depends... Do you want to take advantage of tax programs such as the Timber Depletion Allowance? When buying forestland is essential to know your basis, especially the basis of your timber, this allows for a significant tax break when it comes time to sell any timber from the property, and the value of this basis must be determined as of the day that you become the owner of the property. Do you want your banker to consider the whole value of the property when considering your (4 comments)
One of the things that I like about these Audit Inventories it that we stay in one remote area long enough to set up a camp.
On this project we had 5 people camped out in 1 camper, 2 vehicles and 1 tent.
We found out after setting up this camp along an old logging road that someone else thought that it would also be a good place to set up a bear baiting station 50 yards further down the trail. The Bears kept to themselves (7 comments)
I always enjoy these audit cruises which we do for several clients in order for their shareholders and the SEC to know that their internal inventory matches up with an independent inventory.
Here are a few photos of a day of cruising timber with my two boys on this cruise. Josh took most of the artsy shots and I took most of the less interesting shots.
Nestled in amongst some of the best trees in Eastern Rusk County we set up camp for another Post Sale Audit Inventory.
Rusk County is not known for having nearly the quality of forests that are found in the Argonne area, our client does a great job of managing for high quality timber and it is reflected in the best timber in the county.
For this crew we are using the big camper and a few tents (6 comments)

Forestry Camp, Running a Lean Operation We keep our projects profitable for all while saving our clients dollars by being highly efficient. One of our efficiency tools is to keep the crew very close to the project, cutting travel costs as well as lodging costs. This camp is located in the center of a block of 10,000 acres of prime oak and Northern Hardwoods in NE Wisconsin.
If you know of anyone looking for an exception crew of Foresters to inventory, appraise or manage a forest.... Remember, When only the Best will do, Count on (8 comments)
It pays many times over to hire a Forester to manage your timber sale
It really does pay big money to hire a forester
I recently had a man call me and ask for some advice in selling his timber.
A logger had approached him and offered him $5000 for a "selective thinning" of his forest, cutting everything with a 10 inch stump or larger, and he was concerned about how this would look.

appraisal: Stolen Trees are Expensive Trees

This past week my son Nick who recently earned his Forestry degree conducted what we refer to as a Timber Trespass Appraisal. A Timber Trespass Appraisal, is basically an appraisal of the remaining stumps after somebody trespasses on your land and cuts your trees. After measuring and recording the condition of the stumps we then go out in the remaining forest and measure comparable trees that come close in species, size and condition to the remaining stumps. The comparable trees are measured and valued in an effort to place a value on the trees that were removed from our clients (9 comments)
