appraisal: Rusk County Forestry Camp - 06/25/14 04:23 PM
Woodland Management Service Rusk County Forestry Camp,

Nestled in among some of the best trees in Eastern Rusk County we set up camp for another Post Sale Audit Inventory.

Rusk County is not known for having nearly the quality of forests that are found in the Argonne area, our client does a great job of managing for high quality timber and it is reflected in the best timber in the county.
We find that we can be more competative than other companies partly due to our willingness to camp out in the forest that we … (1 comments)

Timber cruising near Monico, Wisconsin

I always enjoy working in this area of Wisconsin, the timber is great, the wildlife is plentiful, and the scenery is exceptional.
Here is a photo of one of our young Foresters with his DME, compass, and other gear; cruising a stand of high quality Sugar Maple near Monico Wisconsin.

Pic's from the Pond, part 1 of many
About 15 years ago I was sitting in my Cadott office when it occurred to me that it would be very nice to have a duck pond in from of my office window.
So I talked to Bob Josephic, a friend from the Cadott Chamber of Commerce and my Lions club sponsor about getting one of his large excavators out to my place for a day of digging ponds.
After a day of digging I had my old barn foundation buried, and half a dozen ponds dug around the farm.
And as a … (17 comments)

Quality Foresters and Forests of Northern Wisconsin
Inventory of the fine quality hardwoods of Northeast Wisconsin.
A great place to visit, a great place to live and an even better place to grow high quality hardwoods including Red Oak, Sugar Maple, Ash, Yellow Birch, and More.  But watch out for the Hodags in this area.
Notice the high quality trees and abundant regeneration in this photo of one of our Foresters.

Cruising Timber, break time near Ontonagon Michigan
These are a few shots from a recent trip we took to the Northern tip of Michigan for a 400,000 acre inventory and appraisal.

While taking a break and heading into town for a few supplies, I found this cool mural painted on the windows of an old store.

I thought it photo-worthy, hope you like it too.

Argonne Wisconsin Timber Cruise, Camp Visitors

While the other Foresters where out doing some inventory for an audit on a large clients property in the Argonne Wisconsin area I was sitting in my camper doing some paperwork when I got a few visitors.

They were very cute and my older son Josh was nice enough to stop in camp and help to send these baby raccoon's back to the forest, after they got their pictures taken.

We are hoping that they found their momma, and not any more camp groceries.

Trees, Bears, Hodags and a few Cranes in Monico Wisconsin

Monico, in addition to having some sort of strange multilegged hodag in its park is also the place where we have seen more bears than any other place in Wisconsin.
It seems like every time you stop hiking to do an inventory plot one of these critters jumps up from where it was laying down hiding to let us pass and runs away, while startling the forester as well.

TBT Hiking the Luna Whitedeer, bringing back Memories of my Early Days

Thirty years ago in my first year in the US Forest Service, I was in charge of a Youth Conservation Corps crew and our main accomplishment for the summer was to construct the Luna Whitedeer trail in the Nicolet National forest.

At the time it was a tremendous amount of sweat and toil scratching this 4 mile trail out to the dense tree roots of Northern

appraisal: Creating a Wildlife Paradise on My Land - 06/11/14 01:34 PM
Creating a Wildlife Paradise on My Land
Like humans, most wildlife species are looking for a great place to live, their habitat.
Great wildlife habitat includes a good mix of food, shelter, and water.
The main way forest and wildlife managers create habitat for wildlife is by managing the stages of forest succession.
Forest succession is basically the path that a forest takes from an open field, to young even aged trees, to older uneven aged trees, and finally to a mature climax forest.
Creating various wildlife habitats generally involves harvesting trees, planting trees, and or allowing … (8 comments)

appraisal: Ignoring the Forest Not the Best Option for Wildlife & Forest Health - 06/03/14 02:57 PM
Ignoring the Forest is Not the Best Option for Wildlife and Forest Health
Leaving your forest alone is seldom the best option for either wildlife habitat or a healthy forest.
An unmanaged forest will become stagnant reducing the amount of food for wildlife and crowding out all of the younger trees which are important for the next generation of the forest.
Most wildlife requires a diverse forest with varied ages and types of trees for both food and shelter.
And a healthy sustainable forest requires various ages of trees to enable future generations.

appraisal: ADDITIONAL INCOME AVAILABLE FOR LANDOWNERS, HUNTING LEASE PROGRAM - 06/02/14 05:43 AM
Hunters are Looking to Lease Your Forestland ADDITIONAL INCOME AVAILABLE FOR LANDOWNERS IN HUNTING LEASE PROGRAM
—By leasing out their land, woodland owners may be able to profit from the rich tradition of hunting that exists in Wisconsin. An untapped source of income could exist on property that sustains wildlife.
Having exclusive access to private land during hunting season is a price that many hunters are willing to pay.  Leasing out deer hunting rights will not only increase a hunter’s chance of success, but the lease payments could be enough to cover landowners’ property taxes.  The payments can also go … (5 comments)

How Much Do You Save When You Do It Yourself?  (Negative $492,600)

Unfortunately the people who need to make the most money from their forest are generally the first people to take a small shortcut that will damage their forest and their bank account.

Countless examples have proven to us and our clients that it pays many times over to hire a Forester to manage your timber sale.

It really does pay big money to hire a forester.

I recently had a man call me and ask for some advice in selling his timber.

Lucy's Kissing Booth, Left in the Forest?

I am accustomed to finding odd things in the forest, often in a place where you feel so remote that humans seldom venture much less leave things behind.

Sometimes it is as simple as an abandoned farmstead or a forgotten maple syrup bucket grown into a tree, and one time while doing a forest inventory in New Mexico I found a Model T car far up in the mountains with trees growing through it.

Today's find was not too dramatic but it did cause … (12 comments)

appraisal: Spring and Summer Danger, Oak Wilt can kill your most valuable trees! - 05/26/14 04:11 PM
Spring and Summer Danger, Oak Wilt can kill your most valuable trees!
Oak is one of the highest valued forests for reasons beyond the beauty it adds to Wisconsin woods.  Not only does it produce high-value lumber, which goes into fine furniture and trim, but it is an essential component of wildlife habitats, including that of deer and turkey.
Unfortunately, oak regeneration is often difficult due to overgrazing by wildlife and a reluctance of landowners to create the openings in their forests required for oak seedlings to thrive.
Growth in our Oak forest declines annually due to old … (14 comments)

Throwback Thursday, a Forest Begins
Thank you to Kerrie for initiating Throwback Thursdays here on Active Rain, it is prompting me to dig for old pictures.  Unfortunately I have not been nearly as effective at archiving photos as I would would like to have been.
These photos take me back a little over twenty years ago on a day when some old friends Marv and Mary Bloedow came over for a visit and toured our recently planted forest.
The kids were young, Josh was 5, Amy was 3, Nick was just 2, and so were the trees that are hiding in … (17 comments)

Another busy week in Wisconsin Forestry.
Today was a great day to be in the woods, the sun was shining, the snow is gone, and a few of us Woodland Management Service Foresters are on a mission to sign up as many new clients this month as we can before summer gets here and the leaves get in the way.
I like signing up clients, it is an opportunity to meet new people and educate them on what makes their forest work well.   And if all works out well, it is the beginning of our mission to improve their forest … (11 comments)
