appraisal: Icy Day In The Woods, Time to Do Some Office Work Today - 04/04/14 06:00 AM
Icy Day In The Woods, Time to Do Some Office Work Today.

It's been a very busy week at Woodland Managment Service and the next few are expected to be very busy as well.
But at least one of our Foresters got an unexpected office catchup day today.

It started off well but 2 hours into the morning the ice was starting to accumulate on the trees making the paint that he was marking with unlikely to stick.

appraisal: Tax Assistance for Wisconsin Forestland Owners - 04/03/14 03:43 PM
Tax Assistance for Wisconsin Forestland Owners  Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law (MFL) is a landowner incentive program that encourages sustainable forestry on private woodlands in Wisconsin.
Together with landowner objectives, the law incorporates timber harvesting, wildlife management, water quality and recreation to maintain a healthy and productive forest.
This program benefits all Wisconsinites since sustainable forest management benefits Wisconsin’s economy, hunting, fishing, wildlife, recreation, soils, waterways, air quality, and renews our beautiful forests for everyone to enjoy.

To participate in the MFL program, landowners designate property as “Open” or “Closed” to public access for recreation, and commit to a 25 … (9 comments)

Upper Michigan is one of my favorite places with cool summers, snow filled winters and some of the best Sugar Maple in the world.
With over 9 million acres of forestland, and not that many people, this place is a real treasure.

This place may be a little tough on the deer with deep snows and less food than we see in Wisconsin or Lower Michigan, but you will find more of some of the other wildlife species like Bears, Moose, Wolves and much … (4 comments)

appraisal: Hodags Roaming the Forests of Rhinelander Wisconsin - 03/30/14 02:39 PM
Hodags Roaming the Forests of Rhinelander Wisconsin
While conducting an inventory in the Rhinelander Wisconsin area recently our newest Forester inquired "what is a Hodag" this of course led the rest of the crew to fill her with scarry stories of the numerous Hodags roaming the dark swampy areas that you find far from civilization in this remote area.
I reassured her that she had nothing to fear, we have never lost a crew member to a hodag, bear or any other critter roaming the forest.  She did survive the project without seeing any hodags, there were a … (6 comments)

appraisal: Timber & Wildlife Evaluation makes a difference in finding Buyers - 03/29/14 03:54 AM
Having a good Timber appraisal and Wildlife Habitat inventory can make the difference in finding the right buyer for forestland properties.

A good Forest inventory and apppraisal will allow your seller to properly price and market the property both to investors and hunters who are looking to maximize their investment.  Wildlife habitat should also be incorporated into this appraisal as hunting and recreation is the number one reason for most forestland purchases in Wisconsin.

appraisal: 30 degrees below normal, good news for walking on water! - 03/25/14 02:41 PM
30 degrees below normal, good news for those who need to walk on water!
Spring may be here, but we are happy to see that winter temperatures are sticking around for a while longer.
It is surprising how many projects involve at least one boundary or corner that is in a swamp, pond, lake, or river.  And this week our Foresters are finding a high percentage of these as they survey boundaries on some of the properties that we are managing.
Fortunately it is presently 13 degrees outside and has been pretty nice for most of the last week, nice as … (29 comments)

People don't generally think of the Midwest as a place with mountains, but if you have ever tried to inventory the mountains of Upper Michigan you would testify that we have a few.
Scenery in every direction is a good way to describe Keweenaw County, I highly recommend a visit here to see the endless views, beautiful waterfalls, immense forests and wild creatures.

MFL practices due, did you get your postcard yet?

This past week the Wisconsin DNR sent out the list of all the landowners who are in need of a forester in the Managed Forest Law (MFL) program, if you are on this list you probably know it since they should have sent you a reminder letter too.

We have been busy sending out lots of cool little postcards to the folks of Wisconsin who have practices due in the Managed Forest Law (MFL) program this year too.

appraisal: Do your Forest and the World a Favor, Burn More Firewood! - 03/14/14 05:27 PM
Do your Forest and the World a Favor, Burn More Firewood!
In the comments for my blog post yesterday our friend Bill Feela mentioned that he would be celebrating International Day of the Forests by going out to the woods this weekend and cutting firewood.
Many may not realize that there is a lot of truth to Bill's statement, cutting firewood is Great for the environment in so many ways...

1. Firewood is a renewable resource - it is carbon from the air and energy from the sun.
2. It will replace a tremendous amount of fossil fuels allowing them … (6 comments)

appraisal: What are you doing to Celebrate International Day of Forests - 03/13/14 04:56 PM
What are you doing to Celebrate International Day of Forests next week? We all enjoy the benefits of a country with healthy forests, clean air, clean water, wildlife, recreation, wood, paper, and aesthetics. Over a third of the world is forested and those areas that are not suffer from a micro-climate cycle that is not pleasant or productive. So lets take a little time this next week to celebrate the many benefits that we enjoy in a country that has some of the healthiest forests in the world.   I came across the press release below in my email and thought that my friends … (10 comments)

Congratulations to Saunders Real Estate on a very impressive sale.   This past week Saunders closed on the sale of 380 thousand acres of timberland in North Florida.   Read their press release below for the details. I f you hear of any large tracts of land in your area of the country that may be for sale, let us know, we probably have a client who knows who your next buyer is.   We wont charge a referral fee since our ACF code of ethics prohibits this but hopefully we will be hired by one of the parties to do an … (5 comments)

Bald Eagles, Surviving the Winter with a Little Help from Some Friends
I was reading Facebook tonight and noticed a link to an article in the Green Bay Press Gazette by Ron Zimmer about Eagles congregating near the many paper mills along the rivers in the Fox Valley.
The eagles are gathering here because it is about the only place around where you can find open water this time of year.
Eagles are not the stealthy hunters that some of our other raptors are and seldom get by hunting in the forests and meadows like many hawks and owls do, they … (12 comments)

From a Serious Skeptic of Forestry to one of our Biggest Fans
Yesterday, I gave a little background on a colorful character named Ed Harriman, my grandpa, now today I will tell about one of my first clients after starting Woodland Management Service 26 years ago.
During and after college I spent some time working for the US Forest Service in different parts of the country, like Northern Idaho, New Mexico, and flying all around the west fighting occasional forest fires.
My last job before returning to Wisconsin was in Michigan where I was working as a Procurement Forester, and getting … (7 comments)
