caring for the environment: I am going to enjoy working for this family.
- 05/09/14 05:03 PM
I am going to enjoy working for this family. I have been traveling around with Nick a bit this week and spending more time in cabins visiting with clients than in the woods so far. Today was an opportunity to meet with another very interesting old fellow with an amazingly similar background to mine or at least my background before I went to college. While Nick worked out in his woods Roger and I spent hours sitting in his living room discussing life, family, backwoods farms, hunting, trapping, and outdoor skills. Then he introduced me to a few more

- 05/08/14 12:30 PM
Happy Birthday, working in the Forests of Jackson County Wisconsin We started the second day of our working with Nick trip today with a Birthday Breakfast at Perkins where Nick ate a supersize breakfast that would last all day, and was treated to a free piece of Strawberry French Silk pie. Then it was off to a busy day of hiking through the extreme hills of Western Wisconsin known as Coulees. We saw lots of trees as usual as well as a dozen deer and one large snapping turtle, all very close up. The trees and the snapper stood still to

caring for the environment: Enjoyable Afternoon in Sherwood Forest.
- 05/07/14 03:26 PM
Enjoyable Afternoon in Sherwood Forest. Today I got away from the office for a while and went out to the woods with Nick while he was working in Clark County’s Sherwood Township. Our first stop of the afternoon was at the 80 acre Oak and Maple forest owned by a retired school administrator from Oshkosh. The landowner and I had a very enjoyable visit while Nick collected some data from his forest and a crew of carpenters built a new and very fancy porch on his log cabin. When finished with our visit and tour of this property, Nick

caring for the environment: Watch Your Boundaries, Stolen Trees are Expensive Trees
- 05/05/14 02:27 PM
Watch Your Boundaries, Stolen Trees are Expensive Trees I posted this a year ago, came across it again tonight and thought that the message was important enough to require a repeat. This past week my son Nick who recently earned his Forestry degree conducted what we refer to as a Timber Trespass Appraisal. A Timber Trespass Appraisal, is basically an appraisal of the remaining stumps after somebody trespasses on your land and cuts your trees. After measuring and recording the condition of the stumps we then go out in the remaining forest and measure comparable trees that come close in

caring for the environment: Million Dollars Thrown Away Through Neglect of 270 Acres
- 05/02/14 10:56 AM
Million Dollars Thrown Away Through Neglect of 270 Acres A friend recently introduced me to a friend of his who owns a half section (320 acres) in Western Wisconsin. Both of these fellows seemed proud of the fact that in the 55 years that he owned this property he had been preserving the forest, never cutting anything and certain that it must be worth a fortune by now. Then I had do my job and burst their bubble, and pull out my handy spreadsheet. Just like a rental home that is ignored for 50 years, not only will you lose out

caring for the environment: Earth Week 2014 ends with Words of Wisdom & a little bit of Spring
- 04/26/14 04:46 PM
Earth Week 2014 ends with Words of Wisdom and a little bit of Spring Ending this years Earth Week with a quote and a story from this day 1 year ago. The great French Marshall Lyautey once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years. The Marshall replied, 'In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this afternoon!' John F. Kennedy I always enjoy this quote from JFK, and I printed it of years ago, framed it and stuck

caring for the environment: Go Out and Plant some Trees This Weekend
- 04/25/14 04:57 PM
Go Out and Plant some Trees This Weekend I am heading out to do some work in the woods early in the morning for a busy day, unfortunately it is a little early for planting here, but we do have a few projects in the plans. It has been great fun encouraging people to plant a few trees during this important week known as Earth Week. I hope that a few of you took my advice in the first blog of this series and bought your clients an enduring gift that will last a lifetime for a mere $3.00 Hopefully

caring for the environment: Earth Week, Planting a Yard Tree with a Root Ball
- 04/25/14 09:10 AM
Earth Week, Planting a Yard Tree with a Root Ball This week in honor of Earth Week I will be posting four blogs on Tree Planting this first one is of a hand planter planting forest trees in a production setting, the second one will be another production crew planting in a field with a tree planting machine, the third will be how to hand plant a bare root seedling, and the fourth will be how we plant individual trees in town or a yard. This fourth type of planting is the most accepted method for those who

caring for the environment: Earth Week, Investing in, & Profiting from, Sustainable Forestry
- 04/24/14 03:26 PM
Earth Week, Investing in, and Profiting from, Sustainable Forestry Many think that we do our best for the environment when we ignore it, stop cutting trees and use alternative building products and digital paper. But that is seldom the case since an ignored and unprofitable garden generally gets plowed up and used for something else. Everytime that we see periods when forest products are low, people start bulldozing their trees and planting subdivisions and cornfields. Fortunately when forest products are profitable, a few of those fields get planted to trees, where they will eventually become a forest again. I found this

View Rusk County Forests and Wildlife in a larger map Rusk County Wisconsin, Vast Forests and Trophy Wildlife Rusk County is one of my personal favorite areas of Wisconsin. Our clients at Woodland Management Service not only own a lot of forest land in this county, they are also quite happy with the bountiful wildlife here. Rusk County is home to more than 430 thousand acres of forest land, more than 75 percent of which is private land with the remaining 100 thousand acres being primarily on the County Forest and the Flambeau State Forest. View Clark County Wisconsin Forestland in a larger map Clark County Wisconsin, High Quality Forest Land and Wildlife Clark County Wisconsin includes a great mix of High quality forests and dairy farms which provide great habitat for many wildlife species, especially Whitetail Deer. caring for the environment: Selling Rural Land? Learn to Read and Write Property Legal Descriptions
- 04/12/14 06:40 AM
Selling Rural Land? Learn to Read and Write Property Legal Descriptions We work with a lot of Real Estate Agents in evaluating, finding and helping sell forestland and one of my pet peeves has always been a lack of proper training my most professionals in writing proper legal descriptions. A proper legal description allows anybody who reads it to quickly locate the property on a map as well as on the ground. Our Forestry and Wildlife professionals learn to read and write legal description in college but for most of our clerical staff the first lesson they need to learn is

caring for the environment: I Get A Boost Working With My Competitors To Improve The Profession.
- 04/10/14 04:54 PM
I Get A Boost Working With My Competitors To Improve The Profession. Today Nick and I took a drive up to Tomahawk to visit with some of our competitors at the Wisconsin chapter of the Association of Consulting Foresters annual planning meeting. It was a great meeting, renewing and growing friendships while exploring ways to train and improve ourselves and our profession. It is nice as I grow older and realize how important it is to work with my competition so that we can all become better, knowing that the real competition is not with each other, but rather

caring for the environment: Another Forest Leaving Forestry Behind, or maybe not.
- 04/09/14 02:48 PM
Another Forest Leaving Forestry Behind, or maybe not. I often talk to people who are thinking that they are saving trees by not using them, and I keep repeating that this is a FALLACY promoted by well meaning pseudo environmentalists who know very little of nature, carbon cycles or economics. We do need to make use of our renewable resources or we will not be able to afford to own them. After all the owners of this land do have mortgages, taxes, insurance and all the other expenses involved in owning property. When we don’t use our forests and allow them to

caring for the environment: Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber?
- 04/05/14 04:59 PM
Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber? Q&A#4 After being asked this question several times this week, it may be time to repost this blog. Over the past 25 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning the answer to this question the hard way. Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out. They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to

caring for the environment: Icy Day In The Woods, Time to Do Some Office Work Today
- 04/04/14 06:00 AM
Icy Day In The Woods, Time to Do Some Office Work Today. It's been a very busy week at Woodland Managment Service and the next few are expected to be very busy as well. But at least one of our Foresters got an unexpected office catchup day today. It started off well but 2 hours into the morning the ice was starting to accumulate on the trees making the paint that he was marking with unlikely to stick. So it was
