caring for the environment: Wisconsin, Americas Dairyland, Packerland, & Premium Forestland - 10/26/13 04:53 PM
Wisconsin, Americas Dairyland, Packerland, and the home of Millions of Acres of Forestland.
Wisconsin is known as America's Dairyland, at least that is what our license plates say.
Many people dress up in green outfits wearing silly cheese hats, claiming that it is Packerland.
But those who know, are aware that the forest industry is what keeps Wisconsin in the black with more jobs created here than anywhere else.
And we do need good jobs so that we can afford to enjoy some of that tasty Wisconsin Cheese that my friends come from across the country to enjoy and take home … (7 comments)

caring for the environment: Family Forest Transition, Who will carry on your work? - 10/22/13 11:04 AM
Family Forest Transition, Who will carry on your work?

We have many clients who are dedicated to creating a better forest on their lands.

They are good land stewards, often spending a lifetime improving the forest in little ways and in major ways only to reach the end of their lives and have their hard work completely undone when their heirs liquidate their forest.

Heirs don't generally try to undo their parents work; they generally just don't know what path to take.
They often don't know that taking the wrong trees out in a thinning is generally worse than taking all of … (14 comments)

caring for the environment: Fall is here in the Northwoods & the great things that come with it - 10/17/13 03:43 PM
Fall is here in the Northwoods and all of the great things that come with it.
Walking through the woods this time of year brings me back to some my history of working in the woods of Northern Wisconsin.
The air is cool, the ground will be frozen soon, the leaves are crunchy underfoot, and with the leaves off we can now see the trees.
These days the ability to see the trees is important, helps with judging density, quality, and health of the forest, things that are often tough to see in the summer when the leaves are dense.
When … (11 comments)

Investing in, and profiting from, Sustainable Forestry I was looking for some videos for another purpose tonight and came across this one that I thought would be good for my Active Rain friends to view.
It is a quick intro to a few of the things that foresters do and why they are important.
I hope that you all enjoy this, feel free to ask any questions that come up as you watch.

caring for the environment: Best Management Practices for Water Quality on Forest Lands - 10/03/13 03:55 PM
Best Management Practices for Water Quality on Forest Lands
We do a lot of Audit work at Woodland Management Service, generally for Investment groups and stock holders of corporate lands.
This week my son Nick is doing a different kind of audit, he is working with a team of multidisciplinary professionals who are auditing some State and County lands for Water Quality BMP's or Best Management Practices.
BMP's are important in that they help us to manage our forests in a way that will have a positive impact on the forest as well as the soils and waterways that inhibit the forest.

Need a Break on your Forestland Taxes?

Many states have programs designed to encourage landowners to manage their land more responsibly and offer tax incentive to those who participate.
Today we will be talking about the program in Wisconsin, if you would like to learn more about programs in your state, drop me  a note or give me a call.
Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law (MFL) is a landowner incentive program that encourages sustainable forestry on private woodlands in Wisconsin. Together with landowner objectives, the law incorporates timber harvesting, wildlife management, water quality and recreation to maintain a healthy and productive … (6 comments)

Your Forest May Need a Little Help

Landowners ask, why should I manage the forest on my property, the forest was here before I owned it and will be here after I am gone.  That is true, but here are a few reasons why Forest land needs to be managed.
Nature manages its forest at a slow rate, so in order to improve wildlife habitat, protect watershed, improve recreational value or yield maximum timber production, it needs to be helped along.  Foresters guide the growth by cutting established trees and allowing new ones to grow in their place.

FAQ - My Yard Trees were Damaged by a Road Worker, What do I do Now?
Appraisal of Trees after Road Side Construction and Maintenance.
Sometimes road builders make mistakes too.
Often a homeowner will call us after an over ambitious road crew worker cuts or damages a tree on their property and they are generally surprised to find out how much that tree is worth.
We use a different valuation system for these urban trees than for forest trees which considers aesthetic values much more than straight timber values.
If you do know of anyone who has had … (33 comments)

FAQ – How Can Using Forest Products Help The Environment.
Many people think that using forest products instead of unnatural products like plastic, steel, concrete, etc is bad for the environment because they think that it will prevent trees from being cut down.
This could not be further from the truth but it is a falacy that persists because these people don’t take the time to understand the scientific and economic systems that govern the situation.

caring for the environment: Good Traction for Cruising Through the Woods - 08/25/13 11:39 AM
Good Traction for Cruising Through the Woods
When cruising through the woods it is important to have Great Traction, smooth wimpy boots will not do.
With good traction you can concentrate on the compass point in front of you and ignore whatever you are stepping on, because your boots will handle it and keep you from slipping, tripping, or breaking an ankle.
One day when I was working for the Forest Service I saw how important a good pair of boots was when left my good boots back in town and had to wear my cowboy boots out to the woods.  … (8 comments)

FAQ - I Have Recently Purchased / Inherited Some Forest Land. What Should I Do With It?

Often times I get calls from people who have recently acquired a parcel of Forestland and recognizing that they have a prized asset, seek to find some expert advice on how to maximize this asset.

The first critical step is to have an appraisal completed.
The best time to have an appraisal is before purchasing a property, but if this has not been done then the second best time is NOW.
