forest management plans: Now that you own some Forest Land, What's Next? - 06/12/17 10:56 PM
Now that you own some Forest Land, What's Next?

Often times I get calls from people who have recently acquired a parcel of Forestland and recognizing that they have a prized asset, seek to find some expert advice on how to maximize this asset.

The first critical step is to have an appraisal completed.

The best time to have an appraisal is before purchasing a property, but if this has not been done then the second best time is NOW.

Folks who have an appraisal completed before the purchase often do it at the insistence of their lender, to substantiate the collateral for a purchase … (6 comments)

forest management plans: Most Wildlife Prefer; Plentiful Food & Cover of a Well Managed Forest - 06/09/17 10:32 PM
The Results are in... Most Wildlife Prefer the Plentiful Food and Cover of a Well Managed Forest.
Leaving your forest alone is seldom the best option for either wildlife habitat or a healthy forest.
An unmanaged forest will become stagnant reducing the amount of food for wildlife and crowding out the younger trees which are important for the next generation of the forest.
Most wildlife requires a diverse forest with varied ages and types of trees for both food and shelter.
And a healthy sustainable forest requires various ages of trees to enable future generations.

If you … (10 comments)

Another Forest Leaving Forestry Behind? Maybe not...
I often talk to  people who are thinking that they are saving trees by not using them, and I keep repeating that this is a FALLACY promoted by well meaning pseudo environmentalists who know very little of nature, carbon cycles or economics.
We do need to make use of our renewable resources or we will not be able to afford to own them.  After all the owners of this land do have mortgages, taxes, insurance and all the other expenses involved in owning property.
When we don’t use our forests and allow them to pay … (1 comments)

How Much Do You Save When You Do It Yourself?  (a Negative $492,600)

Unfortunately the people who need to make the most money from their forest are generally the first people to take a small shortcut that will damage their forest and their bank account.

Countless examples have proven to us and our clients that it pays many times over to hire a Forester to manage your timber sale.

It really does pay big money to hire a forester.

I recently had a man call me and ask for some advice in selling his timber.

Aldo Leopold: Wisconsin Pioneer in Forestry and Wildlife Ecology
Recently, I shared a blog post on Sauk County Wisconsin, a place that one of our nations pioneer Foresters and Wildlife Ecologists went to commune with nature during his final years as a professor at the University of Wisconsin.
Realizing that many outside of the Natural Resource professions may have never heard of this man I thought that it my be good to share a few words on him as well as a video.
If you ever have a chance I would suggest that you pick up a copy of his writings from this … (4 comments)

Prairie Chicken Re-route and Video
A few days ago a friend posted this video of Prairie Chickens doing their mating dance on Facebook and it reminded me of a story that I had shared online a few years ago.
So tonight I will reshare the story and the video.

My wife Sally is writing a blog tonight on the Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken festival, which you should go over and read, after reading and commenting on my little blog.
Speaking to her about this got me thinking about a few events from over thirty years ago when I was an underclassman at UWSP.

Quality Oaks, Pines, and Wildlife, Waushara County Wisconsin
175 Thousand Acres of Forested Wildlife habitat can be found in this beautiful Central Wisconsin County.
Though the Oaks here are not spectacular, the pines are exceptional.
One delightful remnant of a foresters advice from the mid part of the last century stands out with spectacular results.
That bit of advice that he gave to all who planted pines here was to mix a little bit of White Pine in with all of the Red Pines that were being planted.
The result of planting this row of White Pine to every three rows of Red Pines … (1 comments)

LEASING HUNTING LAND; INCOME FOR LANDOWNERS, WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS, AND GREAT LAND FOR HUNTERS.

—By leasing out their land, woodland owners may be able to profit from the rich tradition of hunting that exists in Wisconsin. An untapped source of income could exist on property that sustains wildlife.

Having exclusive access to private land during hunting season is a price that many hunters are willing to pay.  Leasing out deer hunting rights will not only increase a hunter’s chance of success, but the lease payments could be enough to cover landowners’ property taxes.  The payments … (5 comments)

Forest Land Owners Tax Break, Dont Miss Out on This Opportunity!
Taxes are killing me, how can I reduce my property taxes on my forestland?
This is a common question among Wisconsin Forest Landowners with increased assessments following the historic increases in Forestland Values in the first decade of this century.
There are a few options out there for you and the best opportunity is likely to be the Managed Forest Law program.
Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law (MFL) is a landowner incentive program that encourages sustainable forestry on private woodlands in Wisconsin.

Family Forest Transition; Who will carry on your Forest Legacy?
We have many clients who are dedicated to creating a better forest on their lands.
They are good land stewards, often spending a lifetime improving the forest in little ways and in major ways only to reach the end of their lives and have their hard work completely undone when their heirs liquidate their forest.
Heirs don't generally try to undo their parents work; they generally just don't know what path to take.
They often don't know that taking the wrong trees out in a thinning is generally worse than taking all of … (6 comments)
