forester: Appraising Big Timber Tracts Quickly and Accurately! - 03/07/17 05:45 PM
Appraising Big Timber Tracts Quickly and Accurately!
 The key tool is Statistics.
The Foresters at Woodland Management Service do Appraise forests of all sizes ranging from individual urban trees to large tracts as large as a half million acres.
Considering that it takes a day to measure and appraise a group of trees in a yard you would think that it would take weeks to measure a forty, or decades to measure a large half million acre tract.
Luckily for our clients, as the properties get larger, our samples get smaller.  On very small properties where the diversity is proportionally larger we need to measure … (12 comments)

forester: Foresters and Loggers, Dissimilar as ... - 09/22/15 04:55 AM
FAQ  Is there a Difference Between a Forester and a Logger??
This is a question that we are not asked often enough; unfortunately far too many assume that Foresters and Loggers are the same.

  Loggers
A logger is someone who harvests trees for a living.
A good logger does know a lot about how a forest grows, which trees are growing well, and the relative value of the trees they are harvesting.
A good logger also knows how to harvest these trees safely, remove them without harming the surrounding trees, and how to make enough … (10 comments)

Lake Superior, A Great Place for a Summer Forestry Project.
We have been working hard in the Stevens Point, Central and Western Wisconsin areas lately and though cooler than many parts of the country it has been too hot still.
So it was nice to finalize an agreement today with a long term client from Michigan's Upper Peninsula on a project that should take us most of the month of August.

This is the time to be in the UP of Michigan, when every other part of the lower 48 are suffering from extreme heat, the deep cold waters of Lake Superior act like … (15 comments)

Loggers Love DIY Forest Landowners

Over the past 26 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning this lesson the hard way.
Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out.  They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process.

70 thousand acres of Forested Wildlife Habitat; Isanti County Minnesota
I am very familiar with this area, having grown up just across the river in Polk County Wisconsin.
Isanti County may seem a little urban at first glance with the Twin Cities just down the road a bit, but it is also a nice place with many Forests, Whitetails and other wildlife.

Isanti County is home to over 70 thousand acres of forest land.

forester: Buffalo County Wisconsin, Home of Trophy Turkey & Whitetail Habitat - 02/11/15 04:03 PM

Buffalo County Wisconsin, Home of Trophy Turkey & Whitetail Habitat
Buffalo County is a Wildlife paradise stretching through the Coulee Region between Eau Claire County and the Mississippi River.
The Coulees in this area of the state are an area where the glaciers bypassed and  we find extensive Oak forests on the hills with farmland in the valleys.  This all adds up to some prime habitat for Oak loving wildlife like Whitetail Deer and Turkeys.
Our clients at Woodland Management Service own land here for the bountiful wildlife and for the quality Oak timber.

MFL, Reducing Property Taxes on Wisconsin Forestland!
Taxes are killing me, how can I reduce my property taxes on my forestland?
This is a common question among Wisconsin Forest Landowners with increased assessments following the historic increases in Forestland Values in the first decade of this century.
There are a few options out there for you and the best opportunity is likely to be the Managed Forest Law program.
Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law (MFL) is a landowner incentive program that encourages sustainable forestry on private woodlands in Wisconsin.
Together with landowner objectives, the law incorporates timber harvesting, wildlife management, water … (6 comments)

When Aldo Leopold wrote 'A Sand County Almanac' he was sitting on his sandy tree farm just a few miles down river from here in
Sauk County, but the terrain is about the same, miles of Pines, Oaks and other forests all growing on a flat sandy plain.
It is a great place to raise pines which is one of the reasons why you see the Wisconsin River lined with paper mills just a few miles north of here.

Above and Beyond, Half a Million Beyond.
Our friend Jared asked  me to tell about a time when we have gone above and beyond this month
At first I was at a loss, wondering if I should tell about some of the renters that we have gone far beyond what should be required by a landlord, sometimes willingly and sometimes against our will.
But then I thought it may be better to tell one of our many Forestry stories, the story of Frank T, from Polk County Wisconsin.
Frank called me and asked for some advice in selling his timber.

Water Quality on Forest Lands, Best Management Practices
We do a lot of Audit work at Woodland Management Service, generally for Investment groups and stock holders of corporate lands.
This month my son Nick is doing a different kind of audit, he is leading a team of multidisciplinary professionals who are auditing some State and County lands for Water Quality BMP's or Best Management Practices.
BMP's are important in that they help us to manage our forests in a way that will have a positive impact on the forest as well as the soils and waterways that inhibit the forest.

Using Forest Products Can Help The Environment.

Many people think that using forest products instead of unnatural products like plastic, steel, concrete, etc is bad for the environment because they think that it will prevent trees from being cut down.
This could not be further from the truth but it is a falacy that persists because these people don’t take the time to understand the scientific and economic systems that govern the situation.

TBT:  Three Junior Foresters, Building Homes for the Birds
This photo takes us back to 1998 on a fantastic summer day when Woodland Management Service hosted a Field Day for the Chippewa Valley chapter of the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association.
It was a great day that took weeks to prepare for with miles of freshly mowed trails leading to all of our demonstration sites and a few research projects.
We also had opportunities for people to build their own birdhouse from kits that we had made a few days ahead of time.

Tick Checking, an Important Job that can be Fun
Though ticks are around throughout the year, we are now in the hieght of Tick Season in this part of the country.
You don’t have to go anywhere near the woods to be found by a wood tick or a deer tick.  We find most of them are lurking in the grass between the road and the woods and sometimes even in our lawn.
When I was a kid we did not get too excited about ticks, they were just a part of summer.  Lyme disease was not something that we had … (15 comments)
