Jackson County Wisconsin UFO Landing Site? Fun Stuff You Find on a Forest Inventory
You don’t often see UFO landing sites that are nearly a mile in diameter, and had this one not been so large I might have missed it.
A while back we were doing an inventory for Wisconsin’s largest private landowner on about 30,000 acres of their forest land that they were considering selling.
Before heading into an area we do spend a bit of time on planning; analyzing GIS photos, maps, and more to determine the best access points, travel routes, timelines, and number of man hours required … (3 comments)

Columbia County Wisconsin, History, Waters, and Naturalists Meet
Our earliest Explorers were excited to find a narrow strip of land where the current city of Portage is located, this portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers was significant since it joined the Great Lakes and the North Atlantic with the Mississippi and the Caribbean.
Later influential Naturalists also found this area significant and we have two renowned environmentalists at each end of the county with John Muir's boyhood home just to the north in Marquette County, and Aldo Leopold's sandy farm just across the river on the west.

Appraising Big Timber Tracts Quickly and Accurately!
 The key tool is Statistics.
The Foresters at Woodland Management Service do Appraise forests of all sizes ranging from individual urban trees to large tracts as large as a half million acres.
Considering that it takes a day to measure and appraise a group of trees in a yard you would think that it would take weeks to measure a forty, or decades to measure a large half million acre tract.
Luckily for our clients, as the properties get larger, our samples get smaller.  On very small properties where the diversity is proportionally larger we need to measure … (12 comments)

These Mistakes Could Cost You a Forest Land Sale
A story about why a potentially valuable chunk of Forestland did not Sell, or nearly did not sell.
One thing that we have learned over the years is that some agents know how to sell forestland and others just don’t get it.
Those who don’t get it will price the property low to start with, put minimum effort into marketing the property, like posting it on the MLS and their own website, and then wonder why it is getting lots of traffic but not selling.
Recently one of these agents who … (12 comments)

Quality Oaks, Pines, and Wildlife, Waushara County Wisconsin
175 Thousand Acres of Forested Wildlife habitat can be found in this beautiful Central Wisconsin County.
Though the Oaks here are not spectacular, the pines are exceptional.
One delightful remnant of a foresters advice from the mid part of the last century stands out with spectacular results.
That bit of advice that he gave to all who planted pines here was to mix a little bit of White Pine in with all of the Red Pines that were being planted.
The result of planting this row of White Pine to every three rows of Red Pines … (2 comments)

FAQ   How do I Encourage More Wildlife on My Land?
This is a common question that the Foresters and Wildlife Specialists at Woodland Management Service are asked.
Of course the next question that we ask the client is, “What type of Wildlife would you like to encourage?”

Regardless of which type of Wildlife they are looking for we know that the most important key to maximum Wildlife Habitat is “Edge”.
Edge is basically the area between two or more ecosystems (timber types, timber ages, non forested areas, wetlands, etc.).
It is our job to know which Edge types are … (6 comments)
