forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: Revisiting a Beautiful Office Space Deep in the Northern Forest - 04/23/17 11:12 PM
Revisiting a Beautiful Office Space Deep in the Northern Forest
Hot and Sunny in Stevens Point today as we close our another Earthweek.
Hard to believe that just two years ago we were working hard and camping out not far from here with temps far below zero.
Well lets hope for many more cool winters since we need them to get to many of the remote office spaces that we frequent.

forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: A Peaceful Visit to Bradley Park in Tomahawk Wisconsin - 01/21/17 10:30 PM
A Peaceful Visit to Bradley Park in Tomahawk Wisconsin
We do get around quite a bit in our work; collecting experiences from near and far.
Once in a while, we even remember to take a camera out and spend some time taking a few pictures and videos.
This week I was noticing that I have far too many of these little trips tucked away in the hard drive of my computer and thought it was time to share some of these with the world.
Tonight, I am going to share a trip to Bradley Park in Tomahawk Wisconsin that one of our Foresters … (8 comments)

forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: Ice Roads, Getting the Job Done in the Northwoods - 01/17/17 12:33 AM
Ice Roads, Getting the Job Done in the Northwoods
We are often asked, how do you get machinery into my remote property with equipment for logging and construction.
The answer is an age old technique used in the Northern States, we make an Ice Road.
We have been having a pretty good winter this year, which is great for people who have a lot of work to do in the Northwoods.
Cold weather can be a blessing for hard working Northerners who need to get into remote areas far from roads, such as loggers or carpenters who are working on remote cabins.
A deep frost can … (12 comments)

Sustainable Forestry; Investing in & profiting from. I was looking for some videos for another purpose tonight and came across this one that I thought would be good for my internet friends to view.
It is a quick intro to a few of the things that foresters do and why they are important.
I hope that you all enjoy this, feel free to ask any questions that come up as you watch.

When you are ready to make the most of your forest, maximize the health of the trees, maximize the wildlife populations, and earn some money from your forest, call a forester … (7 comments)

Dude Where's My Car?  More Lost Stuff We Find In The Woods.
Apparently someone spent a little too much time at the Colburn Tavern, or something like that and lost his car in the woods.
Well it was a blustery cold day out in the woods marking trees and we were fortunate enough to find this fine old car.
Lost for so many years and now it is found, if you know who lost this fine vehicle, let me know.

forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: Time for a Winter Break… - 02/13/15 01:51 PM

Time for a Winter Break…
As people talk about spring approaching in other parts of the country we are still enjoying temperatures resting on both sides of that zero on the thermometer.
This is a good thing since this is the time when hardy Foresters are at their most productive, driving on frozen ground, lakes and rivers and of course taking advantage of our seasonal ability to walk on water.
All of this adds up to use being able to go places that we would not normally go without getting very wet.
I think that this week may be … (11 comments)

3001, Not Much to Talk About Tonight, Well Maybe a Few Porkies.
On to my next thousand blog posts today and nothing seemed to be coming to me.
My mind was full with work commitments and a Christmas party that we are planning for our Franciscan group, far to full and cluttered for a long winded blog post.
But then I came across a batch of photos that one of my Foresters sent to me about a month ago from Eau Claire County Wisconsin.
So many animals of the wild are stealthy and elusive leaving as few tracks as they can and try to … (14 comments)

forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: One More Day Before The Wisconsin Deer Season Starts. - 11/20/14 10:42 AM
One More Day Before The Wisconsin Deer Season Starts.
Our foresters have been out and about this week trying to get a few projects completed before  the forests fill up with orange people carrying guns.
It is good to see that the roads are filled with people heading north toward their cabins and hunting grounds indicating plenty of interest.
Though one thing does concern me in that the snow is deep and the temperatures are cold which if history rings true will equal a low harvest of deer this year.
When the going gets tough all but the hardiest hunters may just … (6 comments)

forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: Do I need to have a Clear Cut on my property? - 11/09/14 09:06 AM
Do I need to have a Clear Cut on my property?
“I have been told that I will need to have a Clear Cut on my property, is there an alternative way to manage my forest?”
It depends…
It depends on what type of trees are in your forest
And what your goals are for your forest.

Some types of trees require total sunlight to reproduce and grow such as Aspen, White Birch, Cottonwood, Red Pine, Jack Pine, Spruce, and Oak.
If your goals for your forest involve keeping the above species then a clear cut may be … (1 comments)

3 Secret Ingredients for Great Hunting Land!

Deer like most wildlife species spend most of their time in what we call Edge areas.
These Edge areas are basically the place where the Three Essentials of all Wildlife Habitat exist, Food, Water, and Cover.
If you understand these essentials and how they apply to Whitetail Deer, and have them on your land then the deer will stay here.

Water
In this part of the country, water is seldom a problem with plentiful wetlands, ponds, streams, lakes and puddles just about everywhere.

forestry and wildlife in wisconsin: Hodags to Swampsquatch, Interesting Wildlife in Northern Wisconsin - 07/05/14 08:35 AM
Hodags to Swampsquatch, Interesting Wildlife in Northern Wisconsin.
Over the years I have written a few tall tales about the Hodags that we see while doing forestry work in the Rhinelander Wisconsin area.
For those of you who have not heard of a Hodag yet, they are big ugly critters who are found in those deep dark forested swamp type areas where few people care to go.
Yesterday a friend, Russ Cabak, attended a 4th of July Parade a few miles down the road from Rhinelander in Tomahawk Wisconsin where he took an interesting picture to post on his Facebook page.
