forestry: Spring and Summer Danger, Oak Wilt can kill your most valuable trees
- 05/19/13 02:49 PM
Spring and Summer Danger, Oak Wilt can kill your most valuable trees Oak is one of the highest valued forests for reasons beyond the beauty it adds to Wisconsin woods. Not only does it produce high-value lumber, which goes into fine furniture and trim, but it is an essential component of wildlife habitats, including that of deer and turkey. Unfortunately, oak regeneration is surprisingly difficult. Oak growth declines annually due to old age and disease. Oak wilt is an aggressive disease that kills thousands of oak trees every year. Although there is no cure for the disease,

forestry: Odd Stuff Left in the Woods
- 05/18/13 04:07 PM
Things you find in the forest I am accustomed to finding odd things in the forest, often in a place where you feel so remote that humans seldom venture much less leave things behind. Sometimes it is as simple as an abandoned farmstead or a forgotten maple syrup bucket grown into a tree, and one time while doing a forest inventory in New Mexico I found a Model T car far up in the mountains with trees growing through it. Today's find was not too dramatic but it did cause me to stop and

forestry: Graduation Day at the Nations Top Forestry School
- 05/17/13 03:03 PM
Graduation Day at the Nations Top Forestry School Tomorrow another group of enthusiastic Forestry and Natural Resource students will be graduating and heading out to save the world, or at least make it run a little better. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources is widely regarded as the nation’s leading undergraduate natural resource program. The program at UWSP owes much of its success to a hands on approach to learning all aspects of the resource, not just forestry, not just wildlife, not just soils, not just water resources, but an interdisciplinary approach to all of

forestry: Hunters are Looking to Lease Your Forestland
- 05/12/13 04:42 PM
ADDITIONAL INCOME AVAILABLE FOR LANDOWNERS IN HUNTING LEASE PROGRAM —By leasing out their land, woodland owners may be able to profit from the rich tradition of hunting that exists in Wisconsin. An untapped source of income could exist on property that sustains wildlife. Having exclusive access to private land during hunting season is a price that many hunters are willing to pay. Leasing out deer hunting rights will not only increase a hunter’s chance of success, but the lease payments could be enough to cover landowners’ property taxes. The payments can also go toward funding habitat improvement projects

forestry: Stolen Trees are Expensive Trees
- 05/01/13 04:55 PM
This past week my son Nick who recently earned his Forestry degree conducted what we refer to as a Timber Trespass Appraisal. A Timber Trespass Appraisal, is basically an appraisal of the remaining stumps after somebody trespasses on your land and cuts your trees. After measuring and recording the condition of the stumps we then go out in the remaining forest and measure comparable trees that come close in species, size and condition to the remaining stumps. The comparable trees are measured and valued in an effort to place a value on the trees that were removed from our clients

forestry: Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber? Q&A#4
- 03/29/13 05:04 PM
Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber? Q&A#4 Over the past 25 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning the answer to this question the hard way. Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out. They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process. A forester knows how to;

forestry: Timber Prices on the Rise, Great News for Healthy Forest Management
- 03/22/13 10:38 AM
Timber values have been in a bit of a slump for quite a while and many of our clients have been anxiously waiting for a headline like this one. Hopefully this will prompt them to do the thinnings on their forest that are so necessary to stimulate growth and vigor. It is unfortunate for many who have waited so long to do any thinning in their forests as many of these forests have gone from high vigor, healthy forests to stagnated forests with a negative growth rate due to overcrowding. Hopefully prices will continue to improve and forest landowners will get

forestry: Maple Syrup Weather, a sign of Spring, and tasty too
- 03/17/13 03:14 PM
Maple Syrup Weather, a sign of Spring, and tasty too. I really enjoy the many seasons that we have in Wisconsin and one of my favorites is Maple Syruping time. The sap runs in the maples when the nights are still freezing and the days are above 40 degrees. This weather pattern generally lasts for about three weeks, during which time tons of sweet watery sap flows from the winter storage area in the trees roots to the growing buds in the tree’s top. This nutritious mixture of water and sugar and other goodies fuels growth in the buds

forestry: Do I need to have a Clear Cut on my property? Q&A#3
- 03/14/13 07:12 PM
Do I need to have a Clear Cut on my property? Q&A#3 “I have been told that I will need to have a Clear Cut on my property, is there an alternative way to manage my forest?” It depends… On what type of trees are in your forest And what your goals are for your forest. Some types of trees require total sunlight to reproduce and grow such as Aspen, White Birch, Cottonwood, Red Pine, Jack Pine, Spruce, and Oak. If your goals for your forest involve keeping the above species then a clear cut may be your best

forestry: Wildlife Habitat Improvement with a Chainsaw Part 1
- 02/22/13 10:31 PM
Wildlife Habitat Improvement with a Chainsaw Part 1 I was watching Larry the cable guy on the History channel a few weeks ago. They were up in Alaska trying to use a moose call to bring in some moose, and they were unsuccessful until one of the researchers brought out a chainsaw and started it up, and the moose came Running in. The head Wildlife Specialist at Woodland Management Service, Jesse Kulesa, always tells his clients that the best thing they can do to attract most wildlife is to do some cutting. Having a winter timber

Nick Crane, Young Real Estate and Forestry A few of you may have noticed Nick on Active Rain, although his only blog so far was featured, he has been too busy with school and work to write much. Maybe if we get ahead here someday I will give him some time off to write a few more blogs. In elementary school Nick was gaining inspiration from the likes of Zig Ziglar, Nido Qubein, Harvey MacKay, Lou Holtz, Bob Crane and other business leaders. By the time he was in High School, he was paying his way through

forestry: Taxes on your Wisconsin Forestland getting too high?
- 01/27/13 06:48 AM
Taxes on your Wisconsin Forestland getting too high? Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law (MFL) is a landowner incentive program that encourages sustainable forestry on private woodlands in Wisconsin. Together with landowner objectives, the law incorporates timber harvesting, wildlife management, water quality and recreation to maintain a healthy and productive forest. Sustainable forest management benefits Wisconsin’s economy, hunting, fishing, wildlife, recreation, soils, waterways, and air quality, and renews our beautiful forests for everyone to enjoy. To participate in the MFL program, landowners designate property as “Open” or “Closed” to public access for recreation, and commit to a 25 or 50 year
