forestry: Early Forestry Lesson from a Beaver - 03/22/15 09:26 AM

Early Forestry Lesson from a Beaver
I was probably in sixth grade and checking my trapline along the lake at the south end of our farm when this lesson occurred.
I came along the shore and noticed that a couple of acres of huge Aspen trees had been toppled for no apparent reason.
And to top it off they had been chewed down, imagine the work that this must have taken.  I have chopped down a few trees with an axe and let me tell you it is a LOT of WORK!
The trees were not utilized, other than … (13 comments)

forestry: Columbia County Wisconsin, History, Waters, and Naturalists Meet - 03/21/15 03:26 PM
Columbia County Wisconsin, History, Waters, and Naturalists Meet
Our earliest Explorers were excited to find a narrow strip of land where the current city of Portage is located, this portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers was significant since it joined the Great Lakes and the North Atlantic with the Mississippi and the Caribbean.
Later influential Naturalists also found this area significant and we have two renowned environmentalists at each end of the county with John Muir's boyhood home just to the north in Marquette County, and Aldo Leopold's sandy farm just across the river on the west.
When Aldo Leopold wrote … (2 comments)

forestry: Guess Where I am Today - 03/21/15 04:03 AM
Guess Where I am Today

A few days ago my friend Yolanda Cordova-Gilbert posed this question along with a statue, it took a few minutes but with the help of Google images I quickly determined that she was in Santiago Chile.
My photo or map is a lot closer to home yet a whole lot more remote, it took a very rough 31 mile mile round trip atv ride to get into this remote location, and if it had not been frozen solid that may not have been possible.
Thank God for frozen ground and water in this part of the … (13 comments)

forestry: Minnesota Cruise Nearly Complete, Who’s Next? - 03/19/15 05:11 PM

Minnesota Cruise Nearly Complete, Who’s Next?
Well things are going very well on the Minnesota project and we are looking at completing our portion of the inventory early and picking up a few plots from another contractor.
For a while we worried about making the deadline, but things are going well now, the temps have slowed down and kept most of the frost in the ground and the ice in the swamps and that of course makes all the difference when working in areas like this.
We are now getting reports back from the check cruisers, all very favorable, … (13 comments)

Big Piles of Local Fuels, Good for People and the Environment
You know you are up north when even the urban areas have truck loads of firewood in the yards.
I was in the town of Little Fork MN a few days ago looking for a café to do some paperwork while other Foresters were out in the woods doing the real work when I came across this and several other serious utilizers of natural local fuels.
It reminded me of how far we have drifted from our roots, spending billions of dollars and more resources and lives to import fuels … (23 comments)

forestry: Highways of the North - 03/05/15 02:12 PM
 Highways of the North
It is nice the way that God carves out these networks of highways through the forests reaching so many of the remote locations that we need to go in order to do our jobs.
And even more, He even freezes them down well so that we will have a good solid surface for speedy travel.
I know that many are anxiously waiting for spring, and there are nights when I too get weary of 30 below temps.
But when the light of day arrives, I am just happy as can be that we have plenty of frozen … (11 comments)

forestry: No Wimps Allowed - 03/02/15 11:12 AM
No Wimps Allowed
As we cruise through and camp out in the rugged Northern Minnesota forests and swamps this sign on the coffee machine struck my eye.
I have told this to a few job applicants in the past, and some ran right away and others waited until they actually heard one of my assignments, and others jumped at the chance to challenge themselves.
My son was raised on the experience of challenging himself so this rugged kind of life suits him well and he is always anxious to get out there for an adventure, as well as save a lot … (29 comments)

forestry: Keep an eye on your Dogs while traveling in Northern Wolf Country - 03/01/15 08:43 AM
Keep an eye on your Dogs while traveling in Northern Wolf Country.
As many of you know we have been working in and camping in some fairly intense Wolf country this winter and of course keeping an eye on the dogs.
Drake had to stay home at the office, but Jack got to come along.
The one condition that Jack had to agree to before joining the expedition, was to keep his safety leash on at all times and stick close to me.

Here is a post from the past that will explain a bit about why this is so … (16 comments)

forestry: Price County, Wisconsin Testimony to Good Forest Management - 03/01/15 08:07 AM
Price County, Wisconsin Testimony to Good Forest Management.
Price County is a wild area where you are almost guaranteed to see some great wildlife like Bears and Wolves.
It is a great place to raise timber and wildlife which is why you see so many smart people anxious to buy hunting land and timber land here.
Over the years I have been extremely impressed with the results of those properties that were well managed with good forestry, especially the Industrial lands where every tree is aggressively managed, the junk cut out and the better quality trees left to grow and reproduce.

forestry: Time for a Winter Break… - 02/13/15 01:51 PM

Time for a Winter Break…
As people talk about spring approaching in other parts of the country we are still enjoying temperatures resting on both sides of that zero on the thermometer.
This is a good thing since this is the time when hardy Foresters are at their most productive, driving on frozen ground, lakes and rivers and of course taking advantage of our seasonal ability to walk on water.
All of this adds up to use being able to go places that we would not normally go without getting very wet.
I think that this week may be … (11 comments)

forestry: Snowday in Sawyer County Again Today - 11/19/14 12:21 PM
Snow-day in Sawyer County Again Today
It has been a snowy week in Northern and Central Wisconsin this week and last.
Luckily it has also been extremely cold so hopefully the ground and ice are both freezing down despite the think blanket of white insulation.
We do rely on that frozen ground and frozen water during the winter months to get most of our work done where roads are sparse and water is plentiful.
Today Nick was supposed to head north from our Cadott office an hour before daylight, check on a timber sale in Chippewa County at 7, and then proceed up to … (11 comments)
